After 7 months of planning we finally took our first Disney cruise on March 20th on the Wonder. Hubby and I have cruised many times before on 5 differant lines, Disney is now my new favorite.
Cast of Characters:
Me: Disney fanatic and wife and grandma
DH: not nearly the fan I am, but like me he does love to cruise
DGS: 9 yr old grandson, quite the character that boy, and has begged for years to take us with him
Right up front I must say that I'm blown away by the cleverness of several trip reports I've read over the past several months, I'll do my best to share some information and opinions.
Now I must say that there have also been many negative reports also and I was a little worried about how things would go.....didn't need to worry at all, we had a fabulous time.
Our journey began on Jetblue out of Portland, Oregon on Saturday the 19th. We had kind of a bumpy flight
but we got there safely and that is all that really matters. We had booked a package through Doubletree in San Pedro it included: one night stay, shuttle from airport and back again on Sunday, two drinks and the breakfast buffet (really pretty good) in the morning. The room was better than I expected.
We met several people from our cruise meet board that evening and then went to dinner in the hotel restaurant. DH, DGS and I had the fish and chips, excellent, so good that we had them again on Sunday afternoon while waiting for the shuttle.
DGS said he was too excited to sleep, gee that sounds like a Disneyland commercial that played last year.
It turned out I was the one that couldn't sleep, woke up 3 times before the alarm went off at 7:00. We got ready, had breakfast and then waited for the shuttle. We were scheduled for the 11:30 one but were on our way by 11:15. It turned out to be perfect timing. We had no lines to wait in....scooted on to the waiting area with a number 12 boarding group number. I think we started our boardiing at 12:15 and were greeted with the personal welcome, DGS thought that was really cool......so did his nanna!
We were directed to the buffet upstairs, but I said we would be happy to wait for a table to open up in Parrot Cay and that worked out just fine. I love the decor in Parrot Cay. There were plenty to choose from, DGS loved getting to pick out his own lunch. The salmon was really good also the fruit tart.
By the time we were leaving the restaurant they were announcing that the cabins were ready. Yipee. Ours was on deck 2, #2062, two doors down from the midship elevators. What everyone has been saying about the small elevators is very true. I wonder if the ones in the Dream are any bigger.
The Edge is right between the two sets of elevators. I was really upset when I learned a couple of months ago that our cabin was so close to the "tween" area.
I shouldn't have worried at all. Only one evenig it got loud at 11:00 at night, no biggie though, they were doing some kind of game and by 11:30 it was quiet again. I had read that the walls were thin, but besides the one incident I didn't hear anything from the Edge or on either side of our cabin.
We met our room steward Alex. He did a great job of keeping our cabin tidy, no small feat with a 9 yr old tornedo in the room.
I was used to getting fresh ice twice aday on other cruise lines. We didn't get any the first day so on Monday afternoon I asked and from then on we had plenty all of the time.
There's more to share about day one, but I need to sign off for tonight. Going to visit my 93 yr old mom at the coast and need to get some sleep. Will be back tomarrow or Sunday to continue.
