Just wondering about this ride- is it jerky? scary?

thanks,
Mary

A little jerky and possibly scary to a child under age 5. I have found that it helps to know the background story of these classic darkrides. In Toad you will almost crash into many things (after all, it is a WILD ride) and in the end you go to hell, which can be scary for some children, while mine just think it's a great place to warm up if it's cold in the parks. ;)

Edited to add: If you want a true spoiler, you can check out the ride video on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j86Eb3toGIM

Think of Snow White or Pinocchio with more quick turns....but not really that quick.

I remember being scared of the train. It's made to look like it is going to run you over. But that was it. It also became one of my favorite rides.

I crave danger like that :rotfl2:

The ride also ends in "hell" with little devils around. That might be a little surprising. My kids always thought it was so funny when they were little.

Yes, it's great. The light at the end of the tunnel is an oncoming train, there's an explosion, and the next thing you know you're in some warm place (it is warm) with little devils laughing at you. Only at Disneyland.

I don't think it would be scary to a little one, but Snow White's Scary Adventures is for sure, and Pinocchio isn't far behind.

One temptation I (and probably other well-meaning parents) succumbed to was rushing through Fantasyland, seeing a short line for Mr. Toad, and riding it first in the day. My 4.5 year old daughter was bawling even in line because it was dark, screamed through the ride, and we had a hard time getting her on any other dark rides for much of the day. I had thought "it's not that scary, it's a kiddie ride, we'll do it now while it's not a long wait." Big mistake. She had no idea what to expect, so it terrified her.

I think a kid's first few rides should be things they can see what they are going to be riding (i.e. Gadget Coaster, Autopia, teacups, even BTMRR) because it builds the trust that it will be more fun than scary, even if there are some surprises. Some of those dark Day-Gol rides in Fantasyland are intense, especially if the kids aren't familiar with the story.

p.s. Roger Rabbit is very similar, except that your car spins around as well.

The last bit of the ride is quite a suprise...... It is a lot hotter than I expected and a little scary (it was so hot that it was hard to breathe). I guess it depends on your kids. This is not a favorite of ours at all :sad2:

That's such a good point. For a child's first visit, I'd concentrate on the outside rides first - Dumbo, the train, Casey Jr, Storybook Land Canal Boats, and maybe go on Peter Pan for the first dark ride, Buzz Light Year, etc. and I would avoid Snow White since that really can scare small ones.

I love Fantasyland at DL. Strangely enough this grown man really likes the dark rides alot. I guess its the kid in me.

When I was little, I would go on SW & Pinocchio, but not Mr. Toad bc of the hell part. That part used to scare me, especially the judge, and the only thing I liked about it was that it was warm. Other than that I never rode on it again until I got older and would bare w/ the old hag & Stromboli.

Thanks everyone. I had no idea it ended the way it does. My youngest is 7, and doesn't mind Snow White or Peter Pan, but I am not sure would like this ending.

Just something to contemplate while I count down the time until our trip.

My 3y/o son refused to go on the Storybook Canal Boats because he was afraid of the giant whale. This is the same kid who wanted me to take him on the Matterhorn. :rotfl2: You just never know how kids will react, but I agree start with the outside rides first.
