Mr. and Mrs. Tikiman Trip report July 2002 AKL and Poly

A fact I almost forgot to report. Remember when a few years ago some people in here were all upset about no beer in the concierge lounge at the Polynesian. Well I found out they do have beer!!! They put out beer on Superbowl weekend. Just something I just remembered.

Aloha

I guess I won't see that beer for some time--no way can I go (even if I wanted to risk cold weather) at that time of year with one in MS and one in HS!

Superbowl weekend must be the only time they put out beer. I guess it makes a bit of sense given the industry's investment in sponsoring the Superbowl. I wonder if this is resort wide in concierge for that weekend only--not that it matters since it's not a time I would visit AND certainly not a big reason to go during that time of year. ;D

Oh, for the good old days when beer was just another part of the service, like wine and cordials. . .

Just for clarification in case anyone else was as confused as I was. I shared Tikiman's wonderful Trip Report with sister and BIL and they were thrilled with the service offered by the Polynesian.

So BIL contacted Polynesian concierge with some specific questions about what to expect as a guest celebrating a special occassion such as anniversary and or birthday. They said they do try very hard to send a complimentary champagne gift for anniversaries and a small birthday cake on birthdays, but any additional gifts, flowers or treats would need to be ordered by the guest and charged to their account. They also at times do send a last day complimentary gift to repeat guests. They said at times some guests do get too many cakes when more than one staff person puts in a request, which is what Tikiman had said.

They said many guests do call in advance and arrange for champagne, candy, flowers, gifts, etc. to be put in the room for their spouse and they would be glad to assist and bill my account. They can even arrange to have this in your room on the day you arrive.

They were so nice to my BIL, he is going to book his trip at the Poly. The staff said they wished they could do more, but financially they are just not able to and if they do for one they have to offer the same service to all.

Hopefully I was the only one confused, :)

Sammie,

Sounds about right to me. They do a good job of catching most special occasions but they may miss a few. The thing with all the cakes in our room was a mistake and does not usually happen. The housekeeping use to sometimes leave little gifts but that was with their own money (or some of the tip money you give them) but that does not happen very often. Knowing the staff they would do so much more if they could afford to do it. They still sneak in surprises every once in a while to add a little magic but I can't give it all away.

In 5 trips to WDW, we've never had the opportunity to visit the Poly, until this trip, when we went there for Sunday mass (which, much to my dismay, is being cancelled!) Anyhoo, I loved the theming here, the pool area is really AWESOME!! On our way to the Luau Cove, we did pass a building that was being refurbished; it was covered with giant cloths. It really wasn't an eyesore, or anything; in fact, we didn't really notice it until my girlfriend's daughter mentioned that they spelled "refurbished" wrong (she thought they meant "refurnished"!!) We also got to sample the Kona coffee at the walk-up counter next to Kona Cafe. Dee-lish!!! I only wish that I would have purchased some beans to bring home with me....:( Although I didn't actually get to see a room, I'd certainly consider staying here....you can't beat the easy access to MK!!:earsgirl:

I always enjoy your reports Steve! We are planning on being in WDW next year for my birthday, which just happens to fall during the week of July 4th. I was a little nervous about scheduling our trip then, but it sounds like you had a great time!

Steve-your pics are wonderful...I have to ask, though. Do you feel that you any preferential treatment due to your many visits and prominent website?---I mean, are the concierge staff any more attentive? Does everyone get 3 b'day cakes? It would be well-deserved, but is the service that you may get representative of service that anyone would get?

The way we have been treated by the Polynesian Concierge has been the way we have been treated since our first stay at the concierge level. That was even before the web page. As far as the 3 cakes goes, that was just a mistake. There were 3 different concierge staff who had put in the request for the cake not knowing the other person made the request.

Some one wanted to read this so I am bumping it before it gets removed.

We saw (and feed) Stumpy on our trip in September. He's partial to pineapple bread. By a coincidence my husband also named him stumpy. On second thought, maybe it wasn't so much of a coincidence.

Hey it is great to hear Stumpy is still around and doing ok. Thanks for telling me.

Aloha
