Moving to Orlando!

He's wanting the Millenia area, I'm more for Kissimmee, we've combed through dozens of listings looking for the right combo of amenities vs price.

And I gotta ask what the heck is the deal with "Car Care Centers" at apartment complexes in the Orlando area?

I think a car care center is basicall a place to wash your car.

Yes, Car Care Centers are basically drive-up car washes - you wash your own car there. Just ask whether they charge $$ for using it. At our apt complex in NC, it was free, but here in Kissimmee, it costs $$ to use the water.

If you're looking in Kissimmee, be aware that much of it is, not to be mean, a hole. Really, there are big parts that look like nothing I've seen anywhere except for the run down, drug neighborhoods on "Cops." We're in the Four Corners part of Kissimmee, which is very, very touristy, but not a high crime area.

I taught (very briefly) at a middle school in Osceola County, and learned that most of the hourly WDW workers live in Kissimmee. They don't make much money, and they are trying to support often large families on their Disney pittances, so there are lots of low income neighborhoods around.

Cheers!

Hunters Creek is a nice area right on the boarder of Kissimmee, lots of apartments there, and its right on the Greeneway. You might want to consider that area...

You are looking for an apartment right? Or are you looking to rent or purchase a home?

As for the "Milennia" area, are you refering to what we call "Metrowest" or basically the Kirkman/Conroy area? I would avoid that at all costs! The crime rate on that part of town is out of control.

Manufactured homes
In south carolina we call them trailers
mobile homes if you have all your teeth.LOL just kidding
lived in one a long time ago and the newer ones are alot better now.

:lmao: :rotfl2: :lmao:

I'm sorry, I have nothing to offer. Wish I was moving to Orlando. I did make it as far as South Carolina (as you can see by my location) and when I read this I laughed out loud!

I just thought this was so funny. :lmao:

Hi neighbor! :wave2:

hmp2z, we've looked at Legacy Dunes, it's looks great, we're putting it on our list. :)

Thanks for all the suggestions, we're mostly concerned with price, as we're both very early in our careers, so living in a dive is something we might be willing to put up with for the first year. We're considering the option of a roommate though. His internship will be at WDW and I'll probably be a CM too.

Quite a few hourly CMs live out here - we have a bus stop right in front of the apt complex. This complex is cheaper than the ones we looked at in Hunter's Creek. The Hunter's Creek area is more upscale, but we still feel safe.

Cheers!

I lived at Kirkman and Metrowest when I first moved here. It wasn't too bad (I was there two years) but got really scary when the Walmart went in. It got VERY scary shortly after I moved away from there. A man was shot and killed by the police in the parking lot of the complex in which I used to live. So try to avoid that area at all costs.

Clermont, although growing fast, still has some affordable areas.

Im currently in an apartment in Hunter's Creek. It's the worse apt. Ive ever lived in, and Ive lived in some real s**tholes in my life.

We've had TONS of break ins (recently there was six breakins within two days). Our alarm system doesnt work either, and we have been waiting for it to be fixed since we moved in.

There have been teenagers having sex and smoking pot in the halls outside our apt.

We've had so many maintence issues, and the rental staff and management are not very friendly or helpful.

Hunters Creek as an area is pretty nice. There is lots of stuff here, plenty of restaurants etc. So that is a nice part. Being right on the Greenway/417 is also great because its a quick trip to Disney from here.

We have actually been really unhappy living in Orlando, and are moving out of here as soon as we can.

I would recommend looking at any apartments you might be interested in on apartmentratings.com to see what people who have lived there are saying.

Good luck!!

Thanks for the heads up Tinkerboy. We've gone to apartmentratings.com, but the problem is people only go there to rant to about their apartment... How many look to compliment their apartment or give an even-handed review. It is helpful to discover what are potential problems, however.

Sorry life in O-town sucks for ya, hwo things work out for ya! :wizard:

yeah, we had that problem when we moved here. But at least it gives you an idea.

We decided the same thing, and took this apartment and ignored the ratings. But now we realize they were dead on.

I know that people LOVE living in the downtown area, like College Park, or near Lake Euola, Thornton Park. Its pricier there, but nice, and you have lots to walk to.

If you look into renting a house, you might have more options of areas too. The houses in Hunters Creeks are nice, and more patrolled.

My apartment community is not a good indicator of Hunters Creek, because the area is nice. Its really just my apt community that is out of control.

There are any number of little houses in Orlando proper for rent. I was just driving around "there" looking at them (curb gazing) with a co-worker who is trying to find a place to live. Cute places, and not breathtakingly expensive. Just heavy breathing expensive.;)

Just have to add, that every time I see the title of this thread, "Movin' to Montana soon, gonna' be a dental floss tycoon..." rambles through my head! :rotfl:

Tons of condos for rent too.

Another great area is Windermere........over by Restaurant Row. Its one of the nicest areas thats for sure.

I'm ripping apart my fridge here, and wanted to let you know...things are a little different down here, we have all sorts of critters!

So, when you get here go to your grocery store and get some of those bug bombs, set them off and come back a few hours later. A little preventative action never hurts! You should do this at least every 6 months unless you move into an apartment that has a monthly pest control.

Also some things need to be stored in the fridge down here that you might not normally put there. Sugar, and Flour are two that come to mind. Also when you buy pasta or rice down here put them in the freezer overnight before putting them in the cupboard. Dont ask, just do it! LOL

How is the home hunting comming along?

Well back to cleaning the house......:rolleyes1

Bug bombs? Freezer? :scared1:

Well, we'll be on property this Sunday. First week is simply fun in the parks and after that we'll be apartment hunting as well as me dropping by WDW Casting for a job.

Soooo excited that things are moving along so well!

Uh, we store sugar and flour in tupperware containers in a cabinet and don't have any problems. :confused3

I think the only thing that will take getting used to is not so much the heat but the humidity!

I keep bread and cereal in the fridge too. Ever since a bad experience with Cap'n Crunch...

Hello all......

I'm also looking to moving to the Orlando area soon. Work has a transfer opportunity available and I'm wondering if I shouldn't jump on it. My ex-BF used to manage apartment complexes here in Maryland, and I know the prices posted on websites like rent.com and apartments.com tend to differ from reality. Could anyone give a rough idea of how much a *nice* one-bedroom would rent for in the Orlando area? Or how much the little homes for rent go for?

I'm driving myself crazy...staying up at night dreaming of moving and worrying about it not being financially feasible.....

Hey!! I lived in DC! Our apt (two bedroom) was about $2300, but we got a pre tax deal because my SO worked for the company that owned the building (and several others in DC, VA, and MD).

Our two bedroom here is about $1000. Sorry I dont know much about one bedrooms. I have a friend who lives downtown Orlando in a one bedroom and I think she is paying somewhere between $700-800???

Good luck in your move!!
