moving to orlando

thought about it but have you ever watched the nightly news upon returning from the "magic"? Crime seems out of control in the greater Orlando area.
It would be nice if you could actually live inside the parks somehow.

no i had no idea it was so bad...i live in jersey in a very urban area...i wonder if its comparative? still-doesnt sound like fun.

Everytime I bring it up, DH reminds me that I'm deathly afraid of the garden snakes we have at home, I'd never last with all those lizards, bugs, and crocs!

My sister and brother-in-law actually did it! They sold their house and moved to the Orlando area a couple of years ago. I'm happy for them, but sometimes a little jealous, like when I say, "So, what are you doing today?" and the reply is, "We'll probably go to Epcot and walk around". Or, "We got a Florida resident rate, so we're going to spend the night at Yacht Club".

I know- I would love to live right there at Disney. I actually did live there from 1968-1977, but alas I was just 18mos-11 years and didnt appreciate it!! We did go to Disney fairly often, but that was the day of the ticket booklets. If there were a family yearly pass we didnt have it. I can remember my neighbor friend and myself scouring the house to see what tickets we had left out of our books to take with us. I often tell my DH I want him to apply for a Disney Imagineering job. Maybe after the kids are grown. I would hate to leave our family here also while the kids are young.

I would love to live right in celebration! I wish I could work there and be in the shows as a character.

I've already been putting in applications for DH at disney in thier IT dept. :) Hoping he'll hear from them soon and we can move....don't know if DH will really agree to it if the opportunity presented itself. (I'm a MUCH bigger disney fan than DH!)

We have friends who go down and work for the winter season. 3 months out of the year they live there and work then come back and run their hotel here.

I think it is the best of both worlds. I want to get a seasonal job but the timing is wrong for now. Snowboard season is just starting.

I live outside of Orlando, about half an hour from Disney. DH actually works there now, and I wouldn't dream of moving. It is fantastic to be able to just decide to go for the afternoon just to do one or two things. I've always been a lover of all things Disney.

The crime rate in Orlando has gone up this year, but it is still not too bad compared to some other big cities. The area I live in, just outside Orlando, is a very low crime area. It's possible to be close without being in the middle of the city!

i went onto a web site that rates crime and i compared it to the worst area where i live(newark,nj) and orlando was double on every crime. is it because its a tourist area? what about kissimmee? i still want to live there. my hubby is an artist so i actually went onto their carreer board to see if there was anything available. have you always lived in florida?

I actually talked to my MIL about moving yesterday and she said she'd love to retire and get a little job and disney! Maybe I can crack her away then when she really agrees then DH will too! Woohoo! (MIL lives alone so if we leave she goes with us!)

If you look at the crime statistics you will see that the clear majority is drug related and happens in a certain area much like many other cities. I live in SE Orlando and feel safe.

Most of the violent crime is confined to a specific isolated area of Orlando, an area you'll most likely never go to. There are far more safe, beautiful neighborhoods here then there are bad.

thats encouraging...im sure its like here also. allot of the crimes here mostly happen in a cartain area also and they are drug/gang related.

I grew up in Haines City...just a bit from WDW. I loved living in the area....but housing prices have gotten crazy and when my dh retired friom the military we decided to live in GA. I miss the parks....but we are close enough to visit often.

That's the main problem. We don't mind heat, humidity, bugs, lizards, ect. And every city has a high crime area, and nicer more suburban areas. But housing prices in all of Florida have skyrocketed. Salaries have not keep up at all. We have moved a lot, and currently we have a huge house north of Dallas. Dh has family north of Orlando. If we moved there we would have to pay twice the price for a house half the size. That is no exageration. If you have mega-equity it may work out, but don't expect to make a better salary there.

I would lOVE to move closer!! As soon as DH retires, we plan on heading to Tenn. That is about as close as I will get, ut sounds great to me;)

Initially sounds GREAT! But then...where would I go on vacation??? It wouldn't seem as special b/c we would be there all the time.
