I know I should know this, but I don't, so any advice is appreciated :)!

It looks like our plans have to change based on work stuff for next spring, so we have to move our booking forward by a week. That in itself is fine; however, we will be moving it across a UY. Does anyone have any advice on what the process is for that? We don't want to lose it- I know by looking at the calendar that this room is not available right now, so we can't just cancel and rebook. It has to be shunted forward. I'm worried that MS will mess it up somehow, so I'd like to be prepared with instructions when I call ;). Thanks in advance!

Could you clarify a bit? You say that the room is not available so I'm not understanding how it could be moved? Unless you mean you are walking the reservation and the dates you actually need are open, just not the ones in between?

If you are a crossing a UY but still wanting to use the same points then points are going to have to be banked. If you have enough points in the next UY then MS could cancel days off the front and add on to the back then bank points and reallocate. It does add a complication but they should be able to accomplish it.

Call and explain exactly what you want. Let them handle it, and once they are ready to finalize it have them read it all back to you.

Also, be sure that the points being used aren't going to expire at the end of your use year. That means making sure you bank points into the following year before your banking deadline.

Sorry. We have the room for a week, and need to move it a week (six days) later, so while it will be available when we want it due to us already having the first day, it is not available for us to just cancel and rebook. It's sort of like walking the reservation, but in this case we actually do need to move it ;).

If the new dates you want are not currently available -- it sounds like you are in a very difficult position for hoping to secure the new reservation. Although it is a great risk, it sounds like you are facing:
  • Canceling all but the last night of the present reservation which becomes the 1st night of the new reservation. (Question: Is that last night in the current UY or the first night of the next UY?)
  • Banking the points points freed by the cancellation assuming they are eligible for banking.
  • Going on a waitlist for the new dates and hoping for the best??
Too risky for me! I'd simply cancel the whole thing; bank all the credits and start from scratch.

EDITED TO ADD: OH! As you are referring to next spring, perhaps you are suggesting that the room you want isn't yet available on the calendar as the 2nd night of the reservation is beyond the 11 month window. In that case ... phone MS and let them handle it. Just be sure that you are w/in the 11-month window for your new start date.

I know I'm confusing everyone, now you all know how I feel about how confusing the whole thing is ;).

The current reservation is in the old UY. The new reservation is in the new UY. I don't want to bank our points from the current UY because when they are freed up, I'd like to use them for a trip sooner than they would be accessible.

So, it actually isn't that confusing. You just can't do it online because it's a popular room/time and the room is booked up and so you need to call MS and then not confuse them! ;)

I'd start with that you need to change your reservation and provide the new check in day and check out day. Also tell them you don't want to bank any points and then their only options will be to use the points in what is then the current UY or if not enough there then they'd have to borrow. Unless you get a very poor or new CM most will do this no problem. Crossing the UY does have issues online but I think MS has the ability to work around that and you've always had to call when doing that anyway.
