Moving , packing question.....

I have not moved for 14 years and even then it was only college junk I was not too concerned w/.
Now we are moving a whopping 1 mile away and I have a packing question.
I want to start packing now and the movers do not come for 10 days. What kind of things can I not wrap in newspaper? In other words what materials will have the ink from the newspaper transfer off on them?
Any one have any good pcking tips?

I wouldn't pack anything that is made of material/cloth, or has is part of such. The ink could run off on it. I'd stick with using the newspaper with hard objects such as dishes, vases, knick knacks, picture frames, etc... Good luck with the move! I hate moving!
 
I hate moving, next time I move is going to be to a nursing home
 
Believe me only the thrill of a double the size and a million amenities I currently do not have is the ONLY reason we are doing this. I also expect to be in this house for at least 10 years as well.
 

If you are worried about something getting the ink, first wrap it in paper towel. Then newspaper. For the most part, when I moved from Georgia here, I had everything I didn't absolutely need wrapped up and boxed. With labels to what was in the boxes. I didn't have a home to move to yet, so I wanted to make sure everything was easy to find whenever we needed it.

we talked about it a while back and decided we should just burn this place and buy all new should we ever decide we had to move,,, (just kidding we would never do that, but its so tempting when you start realizing how much there is in a house..lol))
 
One tip that helped me a lot is paper plates. Get a big package of those cheapo white paper plates and stack them between your dishes, bowls etc. You can even cut them half way up the middle and insert in glasses and stack those as well. Good luck!

Thank you for explaining that! :crazy: I was thinking...one mile away? Maybe they are going from renting to buying. :) I just did a move from FL to VA in March. I'm NEVER leaving this place!!! LOL! :crazy:
 
I would not pack fish in newspaper. I ruined nearly a whole aquarium doing that. Oh and if you are packing the aquarium, remove the water before wrapping it. Trust me on this one. Dogs are ok wrapped in newspaper but if you have more than one keep them away from each other as they tend to remember that whole house training thing and that just makes a mess.

I have a question, if you are only moving a mile away why are you even packing. This is what I would do. Start calling everyone in the phone book and tell them that there is a BBQ at your new house. Then when people arrive for the food, form a line towards your old house. If your town is anything like my town, there will be enough people wanting a free hot dog or hamburger that the line will stretch from your old house to your new one. Then just station one of your family at one end of the line and one at the other. The person at your old house should pick up one item in the house and ask the person in front of them to please pass this forward. Keep doing that and by the time the hamburgers are ready you should have all your stuff moved.

I've done the mile moves, as well as the city to city moves. I always packed myself. Go to U-Haul, and buy lots of boxes. I think this last move we had about 130. Then, go to a pack and mail store, and buy a couple of the 5 foot tall bags of peanuts. Then, buy a bunch of the rolls of bubble wrap from walmart.

Put your dishes, glasses, etc. in a glass pack box, then cover with peanuts. Cover breakables in bubble wrap, then cover with peanuts. etc. It makes an easy move. the movers do all the moving. They are not going to cut your price if you take a couple extra boxes yourself.

Keep a list of what you put in each box. then number each box. When you get to the new place, you will know what boxes go in which room, and what boxes need to be opened first. Also a good exercise for insurance purposes.

Ok, I just gotta ask. Once you packed yourself, how did you get yourself on the truck? Have you ever tried to ship yourself and if so, which shipping company did you use? I was thinking of sending myself to work via UPS in order to save gas money. At first I considered USPS but I measured and I don't fit in that mail slot and I was afraid of being folded or mutilated.

The other question I had was on the 5 foot tall bag of peanuts. Never having met you I have no idea what your eating habits are like so do you think I would need 2 bags of peanuts if I ship myself 11 miles or could I get by with one bag if I eat a good breakfast before packing myself? Oh and one more (sorry I just thought of this one) question. Were the rolls of bubble wrap to protect yourself in the box or were those just for entertainment while you were in the box?

This is awesome, I can see the ideas are endless on this one.

m&m's mom - I like to use paper towels more than newspaper. Then once you unpack you can use the paper towels for cleaning and such.
 
First of all, with only 10 days to go, I would start packing! It probably took me a good 3 weeks to pack all of our stuff (but I also was extremely organized because we knew there were projects to be done before we unpacked and I wanted to be able to find stuff, so far it's working really well! Also I did a lot of sorting and getting rid of stuff, that takes time).

If you are still looking for boxes, check bulletin boards at the grocery store or local newspapers. We have both given away and gotten boxes this way.

I would go to a packing store and buy some unprinted newsprint. It's not all that expensive as far as packing materials go but you don't have to worry about the mess that the ink creates. I know lots of people use bubble wrap and peanuts and stuff like that but IMO (and have moved 5 times in the last 7 years), the unprinted newsprint along with carefully packing so that things nest really does the job. I have never had anything break on me using this method, and would be especially likely to use it in a short distance move.

I also bought full sheet labels from office max and used THOSE to label my boxes. I did this mostly because boxes were handmedowns and had been used 3 or 4 times before I got them so marker on the side was confusing, but the labels worked REALLY well. I printed them out to look like this:

And then just used a sharpie to write a detailed list of contents. They are REALLY easy to read and really easy to find since they stand out against the boxes and if you use any non-standard moving boxes (we used a bunch of pampers boxes, with a colorful design all over it) it really makes them much more pleasant. I printed 2 per 8.5x11 sheet of label and cut them in hal. You could also put your name on them if you prefer. It ALSO allows your labels to be much neater because you can write them flat on a desk like you are used to rather than on the side of the box which REALLY gets tiring for your arm.

Get a tape gun. It's about $10 but makes putting together and sealing boxes SO much easier.

Use a dishpack box as a stand for packing your boxes. The dishpacks are VERY heavy duty (double layer) and can take a lot of weight. They are also at a very good height to save your back.

Alternately, if you are packing very heavy boxes, pack your first box, seal it, put the next empty box on top of it, pack it, seal it and repeat. The less you have to move around those heavy boxes the better, so pack them in place!

Another good packing tip is to use towels and blankets to pad bulkier and oddly shaped items rather than wasting all of that paper. We used blankets and towels to pad out things like lamps.

Since you are moving such a short distance, rather than using expensive wardrobe boxes just take your stuff out of the closet hangers and all, lay it down in your back seat/trunk, and rehang it in the new place. It will save a lot of money to do it that way (or time if you were planning on taking everything down and boxing it like we did!)

When you are unpacking, the paper is a PITA to get rid of too, whether you use newspapers or unprinted newsprint. Take an extra couple of seconds to smooth out and flatten the paper into piles rather than wadding them up. You'll be surprised how much room the wadded up paper will take vs. piling it neatly. Use a large box to store all of the paper.

I think that's most of my packing tips for now!

YEP! I call the movers and have them DO IT ALL! Easy for me...it's covered by DH's work since that's why we move all the time....5 times in 9 years and another one next June....

I hate the packing/moving process, although I do LOVE having a new (to me) house to redecorate every couple of years ;)

DH knows we'll never move unless his work pays for it....it's just too much work!
