moving..changing schools...kids..$$ HELP!

Some of you might remember my posts regarding DD10 and her horrific time at middle school, and the fact that she is now home schooled for the remainder of the school year.

DD9 would be heading into that school in the fall. Well, she isnt!

We're planning to move at some point this summer, within 1/2 hour of here, to get the girls into a different school district.

They have never changed schools- never been 'the new kid' I'm not to sure how this is going to be with them! They will still be close enough to dads house, that we will keep our 50/50 custody agreement. That wont change

That said- I'm looking at a house to rent now, 1/2 hour away, that will be available in August. The timing is perfect, however that leaves this summer to figure out.

The new city, has an EXCELLENT park n rec dept, (I lived there for 5 years when I was younger) and the city itself offers tons for kids. Should I plan on spending the summer at this cities events? hoping that the girls will meet kids of their age, school etc.. What I'm thinking is that I can get passes to this cities public pool- paying non-resident fee, and the girls and I can go there during the week in the summer. I have clinincals until July 5th, but then am off until September.

I am thinking of using the library instead of ours during the summer, and also maybe getting them involved in the YMCA, (thats huge too!) I just dont want them to walk into the school without knowing ANYONE...

Also- this new city is in NH, where I'm in VT. does anyone know how long you have to be a resident to get the resident tuition rate? That would drop my tuition by like 62 bucks a credit...

if it were me, I would definitely get the kids started in the Y etc over the summer. Chances are they will meet lots of kids their age that they will end up going to school with in September then they won't feel so "new". Good thinking!

I think the Y is a good idea. We've never met people at the community pools. Also check with your new school district to see if they offer any summer programs. I just got a big packet of summer enrichment programs from our school.

I just looked at the Y's website. I think what I'm going to do once it's confirmed that we will be renting the particular house (meeting the owners this week) is to contact the Y and the Rec Dept and let them know what my plan is, who knows they might let me pay the resident rates, (big difference) I'll also contact the school district- I never thought of that!

I would also look into any summer programs sponsored by either the town or school district. They may have sports camps (even for beginners) or other activities (art, math, science, etc) that the girls might enjoy and be able to meet other girls their age. My girls started a new school this year. They are younger but I think the rules still apply. We sought out girls in the neighborhood and got to know them. Once I found a friend for each I called the school and asked for them to be in the same class. The school was more than accomadating and said they would do anything they could to make the transition as easy as possible.

Defantly get them into the local scene, it will help a lot even if they don't meet kids at their school. They won't feel so out of place.

I think all of your ideas are great. What a super mom for thinking of all this ahead of time.
Although I don't know your kids they are close to the same ages as mine. We live in a small county with one set of schools. All the kids go to one primary, elementary, middle and high school. Saying that you would think that the kids would know most of the kids in their class each year. No. Each of my kids may know 1 or 2 at the most that are in their same class. We participate in rec soccer, baseball, cheerleading and local Tae Kwan Do school. It's not like we live in a cave. Being young(er) I think they will make new friends and fit right in.

Again I think you are awesome for putting your kids first.

Yes, get the girls involved in summer events. That is a wonderful idea! Kids come from all the different area schools to participate in these programs, and they might not feel like the "new kid" at all.

I moved a lot when I was young, and while it was hard to leave old friends behind, I actually enjoyed being the new girl. Everyone wanted to check you out and be your friend, and I didn't feel compelled to be friends with the "right people."

You might also want to see if there are girl scout troops in the area and if they have summer programs.

I think your ideas are very good ones. as for the tuition, I went to UNH but came from out of state. I think residency was at least a year, but you might want to check with the school and see what they say on it.

we were planning on not moving till this summer but then started talking to teachers and realized it was better for us to move now. that way our kids will start school with about a month left. they will get a chance to know some of the kids before summer starts, find out what activities they may want to get involved in, and WONT be the new kids at the start of the next school year. i've checked in the parks/rec stuff, library, community events-all with an eye at getting them involved.

as for college/tuition-if you are attending now, since it's only 30 minutes away you might want to consider continuing at your current college. you could check with the registrar's office but i think some allow you to finish up a program at residents rate even if you've moved. when i went to college (albiet community) even though i moved mid program from the region it was in i was permitted for a fixed period of time (i think until i was reccognized as a resident of the new district) with all my previous resident status. 30 minutes wouldnt be bad as compared to $62 per unit increase

Any chance the new school offers any type of summer program for kids? Our school district has something for 3 weeks out of the summer with a bunch of stuff to choose from. Maybe the new school will have something like that and you could sign them so they could get to know kids ahead of time!
