Movies from the Library

I posted a few days ago about this. Our library is wonderful. They belong to a large group of other libraries. I go online and place a hold. If it's not available at our library, they will get it from another one. Most new releases are only 7 days and everything else is 3 weeks. There is no charge. If the DVD is from our library and it's late, the cost is 10 CENTS/day. If it's from another library the late fee can be as much $1.00/day.

Our library also has video games discs (Wii, XBox, Game Cube...) that are free to rent. Again, you can place a hold on games from other libraries as well. The late fee on these are $1.00/day.

While we're talking about libraries, I posted a thread a few days ago about being able to check out museum passes for free at out library. Just another money saving idea.

My library is great, though I am biased since I work there But really it is one of the best ones I have been in. We get new releases, there is no charge for DVD's loans. It is just like a book or audiobook.

One of the biggest threats to libraries right now is funding. Ours has been cut a lot this year and we have to shorten hours.

I try to check often for "new release" movies at my libarary too but I never seem to get on the list soon enough. i just add them and they come when they come.

I really like that I can get some TV series from the library too. I was able to watch the earlier seasons of HOUSE, MD. I was able to watch all 6 seasons of LOST. Right now we are watching Glee, season 1. Hopefully I will be able to get season 2 early, so we can watch season 3, when it airs.

OP you are lucky you can get new releases at your library. Here it is whatever is donated and usually those are old, scratched DVDs and barely working VHS tapes.

Honestly 6 bucks to rent 2 movies and a game is cheap. I wouldn't complain. That is cheaper than a bargain movie around here.

Our library doesn't charge to rent movies, but you can only have them for two days. With the amount of late fees we seem to incur with this I think we are doing our part to keep the library open.
We are never more than a day late, but ALWAYS a day late for some reason

I used to go to the library.

Then the books that I wanted to read were either not available or dirty.
Food stains, hair, and the last straw was a used qtip stuck in a book as a book mark.

I used to buy my kids books when they were young (used or discounted) because I could not afford to replace an expensive library edition if one was messed up.
And with three little ones it was too much to risk.

The final straw was the breaking up of the library system here.
They now want $50 a person a year to use their limited resources of one branch...no getting stuff ordered from elsewhere...

So, I look for books at the Goodwill bargain barn, big box stores occasionally, and Amazon.

It is sad.
When I was a kid my mom hauled us to the library once every week or two.

I love our library system. It has a large DVD budget and we get new releases the same time as Blockbuster does. Borrowing periods for a DVD are 7 days for a single disc, 14 days for multi-disc sets. Late fines are a whole whopping 25 cents a day per item, unlike the local video rental places that charge $3-4 dollars a day.

I have no trouble getting new releases. The key to getting them early and not being put high on a reserve list is to PLAN. I look up movies on Amazon and as soon as I see them showing up with an expected release date, I then go look up the item in our library's database to see if the library is ordering copies, and then put myself on the wait list forming for it. By doing this I manage to get most DVDs the first week they come out.

I also keep disc cleaning wipes and have a disc resurfacer that I use to repair damaged library CDs and DVDs on the downlow. (For years our local library district didn't have a disc resurfacer and would just throw out slightly scratched discs that could have been repaired. Only now that they have a budget crisis have they invested in a disc resurfacer!)

It seems whenever I get a movie from the library it is cracked or scratched so bad that it is useless. This has happened the last 3 times I picked up a movie. I also seems to get the scratched up DVD's from Redbox too! I clean them at home, but they still skip throughout the movie. If you get a bad movie from Redbox make sure to give them a call to clear the movie out of the box so others do not rent them! I do not think many people do this....and so the damaged movies keep re-circulating. Redbox will give you 2 movie credits when you let them know you have a damaged movie. I know it's only $1....but when you rent a couple of times a week it can add up....especially when the movies are unwatchable.

I feel your pain. While $6 may seem like a drop in the bucket to many people, it's big money to others, and if you're trying to trim your budget then you definitely need to pay attention to the 'little things' because they add up fast.
