Moved from the Budget Board: anyone else eliminating High Fructose Corn Syrup

Has anyone found fruit snacks without it? That's one thing Russ really wants and doesn't understand why he can't have it - I've not been able to find ANY without the HFCS. I tried convincing him dried apples were the same. He doesn't believe me. :rotfl:

I'm pretty sure that some of the Betty Crocker ones have some corn syrup, but not HFCS.

Bumpershoot,

As far as drinks, I'm brewing my own ice tea. Usually just Lipton, but now and then I'll try a Celestial Seasonings one.

I don't know if this would cut it with your husband, but sometimes I buy a non-alcoholic beer. I think I was buying Sharps. It's quite low in calories, I think around 60, and a little more umph then ice tea.

It use to fill me up and I found myself eating smaller meals if I had one ahead of time. I think I'm going to pick some up now that I just remembered that it took the edge off my appetite. :rotfl2:

I started eliminating alot of it in Jan 08. Recently, due to business travel combined with PMS, I had a bit of a relapse but am back into it.

It's makes such a huge difference to eliminate HFCS.

Bumbershoot, have you tried the Franz Bakery's new breads? http://usbakery.com/index.php?page=variety-breads We love the Big Horn Valley and Oregon Trail whole wheat.

We've been sticking with the Safeway O Organics breads. We all like them (though each of us likes different "flavors") so even if they are expensive, we're sticking with them for now. But I will look for the Franz brand!

Editing to add that I just saw your quote by Russ and your comment. That is so incredibly cute. :)

So, to save me from reading the entire thread, can someone tell me if both CS and HFCS are bad for you, or is HFCS the only bad one?

A page or so ago I mentioned that for us, we have to avoid both. But that's b/c my son is very sensitive to these highly changed corn products (and he refuses to try corn again, it's been something like 1.5 years since he has tried it, so it might be corn itself that's the problem with DS) and becomes a "dragon". Flipping out over the smallest things, he attacks physically, he runs around and won't stop...he would be diagnosed with a variety of things if a psychiatrist only ever saw him "on" HFCS, corn syrup, and corn syrup solids (and maybe dextrose, cornstarch and even plain old corn).

When my husband has HFCS he passes out. His ND thought he had blood sugar issues based on his symptoms (he's never tested positive for such things) and urged some measures to keep him from getting tired. They just said to watch sugar. But he's fine with sugar (as is our son), but if he drinks a HFCS soda or eats something with the same ingredients DS is sensitive to, he will simply pass out or nearly pass out. Figured that out while he was driving one day...:scared:

But I think that most people here aren't avoiding it for that reason (though if someone's child is exhibiting weird symptoms, I highly HIGHLY recommend checking out their diets, look for Uncrustables (both cs and HFCS), look for those ingredients eaten in the same time span as the flip out/meltdown, and go from there), which means you're only looking at HFCS.

Something for you to consider, depending on your taste preferences...Lipton Sugar Sweetened Iced Tea Mix (Natural Lemon Flavor) - I buy a 5lb 12oz container of it at BJ's for DH & I (I think it's $7-8). Here are the ingredients word for word:

SUGAR, CITRIC ACID (PROVIDES TARTNESS), INSTANT TEA POWDER, SILICON DIOXIDE (PREVENTS CAKING), NATUAL LEMON FLAVOR, RED 40

It does contain the red dye 40 and is certainly not the healthiest beverage on the planet, but it was a good compromise for us when we eliminated soda and my favorite cranberry juice cocktail (sigh)...so now we pretty much just drink the iced tea, water, and milk. And the funny thing is...I rarely drink the iced tea anymore either...mostly just water. Never thought I'd see the day, LOL!

Thanks!

He doesn't drink much at all (maybe a beer a year, and despite being a big guy, that gets him drunk, which is a sight to see!) and so that wouldn't work. Plus he likes something other than water at work, and I can't quite see his bosses liking the Near Beer at the cubicle! :rotfl:

But if it were ME needing something, that would be a really good idea! Thank you!

I have Heinz Wor. Sauce and it has HFCS. Boo. :( (We haven't thrown away anything since I eliminated HFCS - just not purchased anything with it in it!)

Hi,

I work hard to feed our family healthy foods, and we don't use products containing MSG or HFCS, among other things. We also don't use white sugar or bleached flours, but anyway...

As for fruit snacks ~ do you have a Costco? They have wonderful packages of fruit leather! The children love it. And there are no extra ingredients :)

You can make fruit roll ups. And there is a fruit leather you can buy that is just juice flavored. Don't know of any that are in shapes, though. YOu could always cookie cut them, though.

For fruit snacks, my kids LOVE Fruitabu

http://www.fruitabu.com/

They aren't shaped, but they don't seem to miss the shapes anymore. And this is coming from a family that would buy the bulk packs of fruit snacks at Sam's Club.

Does anyone know what area of the store the Costco fruit leathers are???? Ive been buying them at Trader Joes (but at $0.49 each) they add up quick! And, I cant find them at my regular grocery store.

We tried the Barbaras Rite Lite Rounds yesterday (like Ritz crackers) and my 5 year old DD asked me (when I tried to pass them off as the same), if they were old, because they were 'really hard' :lmao: Maybe with time she'll like them better!

Also, I beleive the Weight Watchers Pitas are HFCS free (although I threw the bag out yesterday).

Week 2 of no or little HFCS and its amazing how much more level I feel like I am. Much less cravings, and my blood sugar levels feel much more level.

(and PS Ive lost over 6 pounds too, but have been excersing and doing WW, while eating no HFCS!)

How long does it take after eliminating HFCS to notice a difference in the way you feel? I'm starting today, but just wondering when I should notice a difference? Thanks for all the helpful info here!!! I was really clueless before reading this thread!

Unfortunately I haven't seen any difference. I know it's healthier so I keep shopping for HFCS free foods, but no weight loss, no change in the way I feel. But I was not a soda drinker and ate pretty healthy before so maybe I wasn't ingesting that much of the stuff before.

That's me, too. I generally feel the same, except that I do notice a "bleah" feeling if I have a soda.

DH, however, had a chance to experiment with sodas and his weight loss. He'd been drinking sodas without telling me about it, and was doing a .2 lb a week loss for quite awhile. Then he quit soda, and bounced up to .6 lb a week. Then I bought the Mexican cane sugar Coke at Costco, and he had one a day. His loss slowed again, but only a little. He went to .4 lb per week instead of .6. So the sugar changed things, but NOT as much as the HFCS soda. It was interesting!

But the point is that if you're having a problem b/c of it, if you are eating a lot, or if you are eating something loaded with it routinely like soda, you are probably going to notice a difference, and you might even notice the difference if you substitute something else for it with equal calories, like DH did.

I can't wait to see if our Costco sells it :cool1: I did buy some of the yellow cap kosher Coke at Wegmans last night :thumbsup2

Mine does not, I checked. No yellow caps here anywhere either. But our Cub foods stores did have 16 oz glass bottles of Mexican coke in their Mexican food aisle. Of course they were $1.49 a bottle, but I bought a couple in case I want to have some every once in awhile.

Hi,
Don't know if anyone posted this yet b/c I didn't want to read through all 11 pages, but Heinz did come out with an organic ketchup that doesn't have high fructose corn syrup.

I stopped eating it about a year ago and was amazed at how I slimmed down for seemingly no reason. I feel so much better too, stick with it!

Our Mexican coke is over near the beer, not the soda. It's pretty hidden. I actually thought it was gone, but I just saw it again a couple hours ago.

I didn't really feel any different but I dropped 8 pounds in a couple of weeks because I just wasn't as hungry. One night on my way to work, I forgot my flavored water so as I was getting a salad from Wendy's, I went ahead and ordered a diet coke. I didn't feel different, but an hour later I was hungry again! I could definitely tell a difference that way.

We have! In fact, we have come almost close to eliminating all processed foods completely! :thumbsup2 We still DO have some snacks in the house, but we are getting closer!

At Costco. :) I was replying to the person said that her Costco didn't sell it, just in case it was hidden in the back like at "mine". :goodvibes
