The Canon I am looking to buy also does video- not what I look for in a camera for still shots but a plus anyway-
What is the significance of .mov format? Does that mean I can not get it to disc so we can watch on DVD? I am totally confused on this one... Please help-

Camera is Canon SX10is- Thx

The .mov format is the quicktime movie (video) format. Depending upon the system (computer) you may already have the software to convert this format for use in a DVD player, many of the popular DVD burning software suites offer such features built in. You'll want to check your DVD burning software to see if it supports that video format, if it does then you'll likely be able to use that software to burn your videos to a format a DVD player can handle.

No digital camera is going to output ready-for-DVD video, so they'll all need some transcoding before you could have a DVD ready to watch on your settop DVD player.

Technically speaking, MOV is a "container format" (similar to AVI, MKV, WMV, etc), and inside that container, audio and video can be stored in a few different formats. To use these files, a DVD authoring package needs to be able to both open the MOV container and know how to deal with the video and audio compression codecs used inside.

Thx- Is there a recommended software to use to do this? I have a few different ones already- not sure which would be the one to use or should I get another one for ease of use- Thx...
Oh- if it matters- my computer(s) runs Windows Vista- thx!

Well, not knowing what software you use for burning cds or dvds, I'll have to use the example of what I use.

I use Nero 8 to create CDs or DVDs. The version of Nero that I have comes with something called Nero Vision. The Nero Vision software can import .mov files, and what it does it walks you through the process of importing your videos, creating the DVD menu etc...

The Nero Vision software will then take your .mov files and re-encode them and create a DVD which is usable in a standalone DVD player.

There are other pieces of software that can be used to achive the same end result, but I'm just most familiar with the Nero suite of software. Oh, and I don't know if you've seen it or not but this thread provides a pretty nice intro video:

Also if you could post the software you use for creating CDs or DVDs, we could help by possibly providing instructions, or links to tutorials if the software you have is able to handle conversion.

Flanigan,

I will find out- I know lame that I don't know off hand... I am not the guru at DVD/ video type stuff- that is my son and my DH knows some- they chose the programs we have- which have not been used yet formore than burning DVD's from some freeware site my DH knows about and to copy/burn from sports DVD's made for us from Coaches and teachers at the school...
I would love to have that intro you posted for me! & whatever program it is that does that! Amazing! I am entering a realm here much deeper than my current knowledge, I know-
I am also very thankful for any of you who have been patient enough to entertain a mere passing comment or suggestion to my questions-
When they get home this evening I will find out and post-
I have PhotoShop CS3 for design and editing- not sure if it also helps w/ conversion of video formats- (I still don't know all functions it can do for me yet either)
I know we have HP program and Roxio
I am not sure if those are just for pics or also video- again, I will find out and post back- Thx!

Moeluv4u7,

I was able to find the following solution for adding .MOV files to a project in Roxio software, it looks like it applies to several different versions of the Roxio software. So you may be in luck and already have the software required for re-encode the video files for use in a stand alone dvd player. Especially if you happen to have the Roxio Easy Media Creator version 8 or newer.

For the intro movie thing, it'd probably be best (if you haven't already done so), to post your request on that thread, there are several different DIS Board Members that can create the video for you and that will ensure you get the attention you'd need for your intro.

If nothing else, since DVD discs are fairly inexpensive any more, and it sounds like you may have some available, you could try a test video or two and see how it turns out.
