Motion sickness

I tried Mission Space Orange once with the patch and I'll never do that again. It didn't make me ill, but I didn't want to do much for about 30 minutes. If I didn't have the patch on, that would have ended my day for sure.

Good to know -- I haven't tried that one yet and was going to this time with patch... maybe I won't! LOL

Scopolamine! I will shamelessly shill for scopolamine from here to Japan and back, because it has made my vacation life so much better than it used to be. I can ride on the subway! I can ride a double decker bus on the top floor! I survived a rainy ferry trip without yakking! I can read in a moving car! I actually got on a small boat that wallowed around the bayou for two whole hours and didn't feel nauseous at all!

(obviously I feel very passionate about this topic)

Only downside for me is that I get really thirsty while on the scopolamine patch, and under my current insurance they're not cheap. But my god it's worth it.
You sound like me! The other side effect I have is my vision is slightly blurry when I tried to read. But, again, SO FREAKING WORTH IT!

I use Bonine and have had great luck with that - used to never be able to ride a simulator or anything that went upside down. Now I ride pretty much everything with the exception of one - there is not enough money in the world to get me on that Storm Force thing :crazy2:!!

I also carry some ginger gum with me. If something gets to me a little bit I chew a piece of that gum and it helps a lot!

Simpsons seem to be the overall worst for folks in general.

Forbidden Journey is another that folks complain about.

Well this worries me. Those are the two rides we're looking most forward to while down there.

Though I think my friend will be fine. I'm the one who seems to have the bigger motion sickness issues apparently, if my last trip on a plane was any indication. I plan to bring Dramamine but it expired in January. Not sure if it will still be good or how often I need to take it. (Never actually used it before.)

I'm flying Southwest where it's all luck where you get to sit. If I'm in the back of the plane again, I am screwed. :crazy2:

Dramamine doesn't help me, but a prescription for the patch you wear behind your ear (can't think of name) saves my life. Forbidden Journey is awful -- but it was fine for me with the patch. Also, Simpsons would've gotten to me without it I think. Anyway, nothing gets to me with my patch on.

I second the patch. Star Tours nearly killed me without the patch but with it, I rode Exp Everest with no issues.

I tried the patch last summer on a cruise (only for a snorkeling excursion when I'd be on a small boat) and it was MAGIC. The only thing, is that I was SO tired that night. I went to bed at 9:00 that night and slept ti'll morning. For those of you who have tried the patch at Universal, did it make you tired at all during the day? I'd really like to try it for thrill rides.

FWIW, I rode Forbidden Journey because I *really* wanted to ride it, and it was awful. Like so awful I had my eyes closed the whole time, wishing for it to be over. After that, I skipped Simpsons, Transformers, Spiderman. I found MIB rough, and I was OK on Gringotts. It made me sad to miss all these rides, but it's just not worth the awful feeling afterwards. I'm really hoping the patch will allow me to try them on our next visit.

Just my experience, but no, the patch doesn't make me tired at all. Even a half dose of Meclazine knocks me out for hours. Like - I lay in one spot and don't move at all. It scares my wife.

The only real side effect I've had with the patch is, the first day I used it, I had some blurred vision for a few hours. Nothing that was a problem, just a bit hard to read signs. I've used the patch on several vacations since (Disney, Universal, Cruises) and haven't had that happen since. Or maybe it has and I haven't had to read anything where I noticed ;)

ETA: Just remembered - on one or two trips, when I stopped using the patch at the end of the trip, I had some dizziness. Again, nothing too serious, but I wasn't about to drive while it was going on.

Transderm Scop does list drowsiness as one of the possible side effects, so that one must have hit you.

I will never go to Universal again without the patch - it just wouldn't be worth it, I'd have to skip so many rides - FJ, Spiderman, Transformers, Simpsons. Universal is not a lot of fun is screens make you sick ;)

Re: the patch - you might want to try it out ahead of time. I used it years ago on my honeymoon and touched my eyes after touching the patch - complete dilation of my pupils and I was useless for the rest of the day b/c I couldn't see properly. Fast forward 13 years to a couple years ago when we were going on a cruise. I tried the patch ahead of time to make sure I wouldn't have any side effects this time and I had the worst dry mouth I could imagine! No amount of drinking water or chewing gum could help. Wasn't worth it for me. I took the Bonine (meclyzine) and it was fine - didn't make me drowsy, and I am one who gets drowsy on Bendryl or Nyquil.

I agree with the previous posters about all the rides that have been mentioned. There are just a lot of spinning or simulation rides at Universal!

Thanks for your replies about the patch. I'm not someone who takes a lot of medication, and was a little concerned about the side-effects when I read the insert. We are only planning on two full days at Universal (pre-cruise), so I will try it on day 1 and see how it goes. I'd just really like to try the rides instead of sitting on a bench at the exit with everyone's hats (having a pity party - ha!)

Also add Jimmy Fallon's Race through NY. For me that was the worst. But I rode it 3 times anyway! It's fun

Pay the $15 for early bird check in on Southwest.
And just close your eyes on the rides, if needed
