Motion Sickness & Rides??

I suffer from motion sickness on anything that spins (even merry go round), and some of those virtual motion rides (forget what they're called - where they have the movie screen) but for those I just close my eyes when I start to feel dizzy and I'm fine. (I made it through Forbidden Journey at IoA. Lots of closed eyes though, lol).
On our upcoming trip, DH is not coming, and he's the designated companion for ODS on all questionable rides. ODS *LOVES* those kinds of rides, they are his favorite. So I'm trying to decide if there's any that I can manage, without getting sick for the rest of the day. He won't go on them by himself and I don't want him to miss out on all of them. I'm ok on roller coasters (as long as they don't go upside down 100 times, once is probably my limit) as they're usually over pretty quick, any longer than 3-4 minutes, I'm sure I couldn't do it. I'm OK on Soarin (I close my eyes part of the time), I'm fine on Expedition Everest and Splash......I was ok on Test Track and 7DMT................the ones I am questioning are:

Big Thunder Mountain
Space Mountain
Dinosaur
Rock n Roller Coaster
Mission Space - I can probably do the Green?

I don't get super motion sick, but certain things set me off during our last trip, like Star Tours. I did Mission Space Green & will never do it again. I wouldn't recommend it. The only good thing about it is that the screen is very small in front of you so you can look down at the floor to gain your bearings, which is what I did a lot of the time. I wouldn't do Rock 'n Roller Coaster because of the motion sickness fear. I did Dinosaur with no issue. It is just dark & jerky, no real spinning or affects that trigger it. Big Thunder Mountain I had no problem with either, it is just very fast & bumpy. You do go around the track a few times on a sharp corner, but it was outside, & more of a fall to 1 side of the car type of turn, not a spinning turn. Space Mountain I was iffy on but after watching several YouTube videos (with & without light) I think I'm going to try it next time. I've done it in the past without issue, but that was a long time ago so I was hesitant on the last trip.

Dinosaur makes me sick and I am not that sensitive to motion sickness...very jerky. Mission space is also taxing on me. The others I feel fine getting off since they are more akin to a roller coaster.

I suffer from motion sickness too - I do the same as you and close my eyes in those simulator rides...

I did fine on Big Thunder (we must have rode it 10 times) - Space Mountain got to me this last time...it had been probably 8 years since I had ridden it and never remembered getting jerked around as much as we did (of course I was younger then lol) I'm not sure of the others, I've always been too chicken to try Rock n Roller Coaster, I know it goes upside down a few times which worries me...I think I'm going to try Dramamine this time to see if it helps because I know my two kids are going to want to be riding all these rides and me being the 4th person I'm going to have to suck it up and go or one of them is going to miss out :/

So it sounds like I can plan to do Big Thunder....although I should have mentioned in my OP I also have neck/back issues, so if it jerks me the wrong way I just may not be able to move my neck or back after that. But hey, at least I won't be puking, lol.

The things we do for our kids. :p

FWIW- I get motion sick very easily. I can ride all of the ones in question, except Mission Space. The jerking is a different issue. Avoid Space Mountain for that reason. My hubby can't ride it b/c of his back. Dinosaur doesn't bother me b/c the room is wide open and you can see where you are moving even if you are bouncing. If roller coasters don't bother you, you should be fine on RnR and BTMR. They are must dos for my fam (DD 11 and DS8)

Have you tried an over the counter motion sickness pill?
They can be taken daily as a preventative measure.
I take one Bonine - which I think is meclazine- every morning. That helps with most everything.
When my son wants to ride multiple times, I will need a second one after the multiple rides, but the motion sickness effects are greatly reduced.

Good idea, i will get some just to be safe

Space Mountain was the worst for me last trip. The worst. I was feeling sick for the next 2 hours!

I refuse to do Mission Space, lol, so I can't comment there. Also stayed away from Dinosaur last trip.

Big Thunder Mountain doesn't do anything to me, neither does 7DMT.

I usually cannot ride anything that spins/jerks/simulates without feeling somewhat sick. Ugh!

Im going to say no to Space Mtn.

As for jerky rides, which one is worst - BTMR, Dino, or RnRrC? Im not going to push it and do all 3. There are times i cant even get out of bed due to neck or back issues, i dont want to increase the odds of that happening.

I have the same problem as you do. Big Thunder and Space Mountain do not bother me at all! Yes, Space Mountain is jerky, but it doesn't affect me in a motion sickness kind of way, the jerkiness is just annoying. I can also ride Dinosaur, but I do have to close my eyes a bit to get through it (unlike how I have to close them through pretty much all of Star Tours, lol). I would say don't do Mission Space though; I have done green before, but I did have to keep my eyes closed the entire time and still felt a little queasy afterward, not worth it to me!

I get motion sick very very easily and highly recommend Bonine, it's my lifesaver where any type of rides are concerned. I take two pills before heading to the parks and I'm good to go all day. It doesn't make me at all sleepy and I'm able to ride most everything without problem. Definitely avoid space mountain if you have any type of neck issues, when I got off that thIng, it felt like I'd just been thrown from a horse and trampled :scared:

From what you've described, I think my motion sickness isn't quite as bad as yours. Big Thunder Mountain is one of my favorites, but it moves really, really quickly, and it's pretty jerky. It *might* be an issue for you.

Space Mountain also moves really quickly, and parts of it make me feel a little queasy. There's one part where you're going through a tunnel with lots of lights and such. I always feel a bit sick here, but it only lasts a few seconds. I would say it's more likely to make you sick than Big Thunder Mountain, but you'll probably be okay.

Dinosaur should be fine, but it does bump quite a bit. If you can handle a bumpy car ride with quick stops, you should be fine, because that's basically all it is.

Rock 'n Roller Coaster never makes me sick at all, but it does go upside down several times. It's probably somewhere between Big Thunder and Space as far as queasiness goes.

There's no way I'd do Mission: Space. I tried it one time (green side), and I felt so ill afterwards. I've never wanted off a ride so badly in my entire life.

A few tips for you, though:

1. Most (all?) rides will let you go all the way through the queue without making you actually ride the attraction. I've done this on Mission: Space and several other rides before. Just tell the CM that you're not riding when they ask how many. Your son will only be alone for the duration of the ride this way. You can actually watch him get on and be waiting for him at the exit.
2. Dramamine works wonders, but I'm sure you've tried it before if your motion sickness is that bad. They also make a non-drowsy kind that still works really well, without making you quite so sleepy.
3. A glass of wine sometimes helps my motion sickness, too.

If I were you, I'd start with Dinosaur and go from there. If you're fine on it, try Big Thunder Mountain. Then you can work your way to Space Mountain and Rock 'n Roller Coaster. I wouldn't try Mission: Space at all. If you decide to ride it, maybe do it last so the possible queasiness won't ruin your day. Have fun! I hope you make it through everything without any nausea at all.

Sorry...I just wanted to agree with others here that you should probably avoid Space Mountain if you have neck/back problems. It is really, really jerky. If you decide to ride it, ask for a seat in the front; they aren't nearly as bad as the rear ones. If you skip it, though, your son can go through the single rider line. There's really no reason for you to ride together anyway; they seat you one behind another, so you can't talk or interact in any way during the ride, and you aren't sitting next to a stranger if you ride alone. Each rider has a whole seat to him or herself. It's one of the best rides to do alone, in my opinion.

If you can make it through Forbidden Journey you can do anything! I have done it twice and it was worse for me the second time when I closed my eyes. Space Mountain was iffy. Wouldn't ride again, but no damage done. Avoided Mission Space due to recommendations from others. Loved Splash and Aerosmith coaster. Everest surprisingly doesn't bother me. Thunder Mountain was fun! Soarin is super fun. Avoided first trip and I'm not sure why. Easy and can't wait to ride it again. The key for me is being able to look at my feet if the motion is bothering me. You can't do that on Journey and that's why I spent all afternoon and evening in bed. Good luck!

Thanks all, that helps. Im def. Skipping space mtn. And mission space. The other 3, will probably pick 2.
I did make it thru forbidden journey, with eye s closed probably 90% of the ride, lol. I felt like i might hurl while on it, but fine once i got off thankfully.
Is bonine better than dramamine or are they pretty similar?

I almost never get motion sickness, but on my last trip Star Tours nearly made me barf after riding it twice in a row on an empty stomach. The following day I had a big lunch then rode it four times in a row and felt fine.

I get motion sickness really easy too. Spinny rides, motion simulators, etc all make me sick. However on this last trip, I got the Transderm Scop. It was AMAZING. I rode everything with no problems what so ever. Rides I could have never rode before. It might be worth it to talk to your dr. about it.

My DH takes dramamine - non drowsy, he says it really helps and he can do Star Tours 3 times in row. He also goes on Big Thunder Mountain, Rock n Roller Coaster and Tower of Terror. But if he has a beer, he gets sleepy even with the non - drowsy.

My wife has had some success with Bonine as well. She also doesn't close her eyes but she lowers her head and looks at her legs...somehow that helps her.
