Motion Sickness for Mission: SPACE?

My son thinks I'll get sick riding Mission: SPACE in Epcot so eventhough we'll be at Epcot 2 days, we only got FP+ for one day.

Anyone else got sick riding Mission? I normally have no problem with rides (the only time I got sick on ride was at Knotts in CA when one ride had us upside down too long before letting us off).

I read about motion sickness for other rides but haven't seen anything about Mission: SPACE.

Is there anything that helps with motion sickness? Some people say ginger?

Thank you

I got sick as a dog on Mission Space orange. I've never gotten sick on a ride before, and don't usually have motion sickness. I'm fine on the green side.

I felt pretty bad on the orange side; I'm fine on green. I take a Less Drowsy Formula Dramamine when I go to Universal or I'd be sick from the simulators. I recommend you try one just in case, rather than spoil the rest of your day. (Disclaimer, I'm not a doctor...I don't even play one on TV!! ;) )

If you don't normally have problems with rides (spinning, twisting, upside down, etc.), why does your son think you will have a problem on this one?
I love Mission Space, it gives the real feeling of being in space.

Hints -
Don't eat or drink in excess before the ride, do not go on with an empty stomach.
Look straight forward during the ride, don't turn your head to look at your son. You will ruin the simulation. Don't mess with the way the imagineers are messing with your brain and body. Just go along with the ride.

You could try Green first to get an idea of the ride. Then, do orange. I think my husband would like the ride in space, but he says he is claustrophobic, so I don't insist he even go on Green. The capsule controls are within easy reach, in other words, close.

Do it, have fun!
(just in case, there are paper sickness bags in each vehicle)

I used Bonine when we went to Universal for the same reason as above, and it worked well for me.

Me, I get nauseous on the green! I take ginger pills, they usually work. As for universal, oh my goodness, most of the rides there make me sick! Motion simulators dont agree with me at all.

What is "green" side and "orange" side? What is the difference other than you get more sick on "orange" side?

Green side has no spinning, it's more of a traditional motion simulator and (in my ride chicken eyes) very tame. Orange side spins. It made me pretty off balance and I just didn't like the feeling. I didn't feel queasy but like my head was exploding. I am never going to ride it again.

Mission: Space is designed as a simulator that is also a centrifuge to simulate G-forces. Due to the rash of people getting ill, they created "Mission Space: Green Team - Less Intense Training" which is the same except the spinning is never activated, so it just rocks you around. "Orange Team - More Intense Training" features 3 segments of high G-forces (they last about 10 seconds each). Because you are enclosed you never know you are spinning, you just feel the G-forces pressing you back into your seat. It makes raising your arms to press the buttons a little more difficult too.

You will tell the CM which side you wish to ride as you enter and they will place you in the appropriate line. Neither version makes me sick, bit Orange Team is bad for my back so I tend to ride Green Team.

Also of note, they recently reduced the Green Team to 25% of total ride capacity (it was 50%), so waits for Green Team may be longer now (they were traditionally shorter).

Thank you everyone. I am so glad I asked. To be on the safe side, I think I'll choose green...

How are the sitting? Does this mean I'll be alone if my kids choose orange side?

Mission Space: Orange is literally the worst I've ever felt in my life and that includes giving birth twice. I was miserable the entire ride and then felt like I might die for about two hours afterwards. Thank goodness we were at Epcot with just adults and my son back at the hotel already because there's no way I could have taken care of him afterwards.

My husband recently went on the Green version. He said the ride was essentially the same just not miserable. Orange is intense just for the sake of being intense. He likes thrill rides but says that he'll never do Orange again because it just wasn't fun.

If I can piggyback on your question, my son did the simulator at the Intrepid in NYC and did not like it at all so he says he will not do Mission Space. I'm not even going to think about getting him on the orange but if he hated one simulator, how likely is he to hate the green one? Should I even bother with it. DH may do it alone but I won't.

You will most likely be grouped another party. I have only been on MS alone once and that was because the other group freaked out when they started to close up the pod and left.

Green Team does not go upside down or anything. It really just shakes you around as you watch a 3D video and Gary Sinese tells you what to do with your buttons. I don't know what the simulators a the Intrepid are like, but if they are the "pitch and roll" (i.e. can go inverted) type that are common, Mission Space Green Team is much less intense than that.

I'm going to piggyback with a question too, if that's okay. How does Mission SPACE: Green compare with, say, Star Tours? Star Tours didn't bother me at all but made my husband queasy. On the other hand, roller coasters make me sick but don't bother him at all.

I'd never be able to stand Mission SPACE: Orange but have been curious about Green...

I have more problems on Prince Charming's Carousel (or whatever it's called these days) than I do on Mission: Space - Orange Team. I think the fact that there are no external sights is what makes the difference for me.

Don't get me wrong - I wouldn't ride it twice in a row, and typically need a beer afterwards, but I'd put it below the Mad Tea Party in terms of the dizziness factor.

I got queasy on it (On green no less because I am a wimp)

My husband went on Orange with our daughter. He became quite sick and he rarely gets motion sick

Our Daughter who gets motion sick in the car? Not a single bit. Went on it 3 times in a row. (Really short standby lines that day)

I have no problem admitting 'Im a big baby. I love fishing; love pirates, but the first time I went on a cruise- I got sick as soon as the ship started moving- so my dreams of sailing the sea's yo-ho'ing with Long John Silver are dead. Do great fishing from a row boat but the two times I went deep sea fishing I spent 98% of the time laid out in the cabin or throwing up overboard- the only reason I caught the one snapper I managed was probably because he was attracted to the floating chunks of hurl.

I can't even do the spinning tea cups at Disney. So no way was I getting on the Orange side of MS, as much as my son and daughter tried to tempt me, I was team green all the way. But as brave and excited as my daughter was to ride it (she'll try anything once-she literally RAN to the ride ahead of us) even she regretted it.

My son was fine but MAN, it really messed my daughter up, poor thing. She had the worst headache and was throwing up afterwards. She was so sick afterwards that we had to find the medical clinic at EPCOT where they gave her some Tylenol and fluids and advised us to get her back to the hotel and let her lay down. Which we did. She was OK again after laying down for an hour or so but by then the park was closed so we didn't go back and missed illuminations.

She hadn't eaten anything really all day before she rode it which the medic thinks might have contributed to her reaction (my son was a constant grazer), but all I know is I'm glad I didn't ride it and I felt so bad for my daughter.

I'd stay away from Orange if you have any doubts. Heck, even if you have NO doubts, I'd still stay away lol

It is quite a bit gentler than Star Tours. The only concern would be claustrophobia.

I used to be able to go on any ride, no problem. But within the last few years I've discovered that I can't do some rides anymore. Mission Space: Orange is one of them. The only thing that kept me from getting sick was the air blowing in my face. If it hadn't been for that glorious air I know things would have ended badly. It was my first trip to WDW as an adult so I had never ridden it before, or Soarin'. After MS:O I went on Soarin' and even with sitting down for a while before the ride I was still pretty queasy. If I remember correctly I tried Green the following trip and still didn't care for it, so I stay away from it completely. I also tried a virtual ride at Disney Quest where you build your own rollercoaster and then go on it afterwards. I had the lowest grade coaster you could build, and when I got out of the booth the guy working it said that he'd never seen someone turn so green on a black and white screen before  lol
