Motion sickness advice

^My wife was on those and they didn't help her at all.Luckily, for her, it was only the 4 day bahamas cruise, but felt like an eternity.I loved the cruise ,but, there's no way she'll try it again.

Gravol seems to be the only readily available remedy in my part of Canada (I asked a pharmacist before one of my trips). If you've never tried other remedies before, I would suggest trying to get some in advance and giving it a go before your trip to make sure it doesn't affect you in unexpected ways. Everyone's different...

I agree with the recommendation to skip Star Tours. I was OK for the first few minutes (and it's actually a pretty cool simulator) but it was just too long for me, and the last 2 minutes were pretty rough. It took me awhile to get back to normal after that. I won't ride (or even watch other people on) the teacups - that's a hard no. And anything with backwards motion does me in, so Expedition Everest is out.

Oddly enough, the one thing that made me feel the most sick at Disney wasn't a ride at all... I found out the hard way that I can't do the circle vision films in the world showcase at EPCOT. I wanted to see the Canadian one (naturally) but I felt horrible afterward. My body knew it was standing still but the constant motion in my peripheral vision threw me way off. I'll never try one of those again.

Most other rides (including Soarin' and Flight of Passage) I'm fine. My general advice would be to play it by ear (no pun intended). If you're not sure about something, but want to experience it with your family, maybe try it later in the day so that you won't miss too much if it doesn't go well. Don't try anything risky right after a big meal, but also don't do it if you're hungry (an empty stomach can make it worse). I also find the weather can make a difference (really hot days are harder overall, but also make it more difficult to overcome mild motion sickness after the fact).

Bottom line - there are so many things at DW that you CAN do, that you probably won't miss the ones you have to sit out on. Good luck and have a blast!

FYI, some of the resort gift shops sell Dramamine Less Drowsy (which is meclizine*) in the area where they have medications for sale. If you don't see it, ask a CM.

SW

*meclizine is authorized for sale in Canada and used to be sold in Canada, but currently there is no manufacturer that sells it in Canada as the last manufacturer that sold it here stopped several years ago

Like it was mentioned here before, meclizine can be purchased on amazon.ca.I just purchased some for my wife to try for her vertigo. Many reviews says it does wonders for it.

Seaband doesn’t work for me at all. Used it on my first cruise and was sick through the whole time. I was breastfeeding and tried not to take any med. After the cruise, I decided not to cruise ever again until I discovered DCL. Haven’t experience any seasickness over the past 6 Disney cruises even with some rough seas. I carry Motioneaze and ginger candies with me just in case. I got sick once after a helicopter ride to a glacier in Juneau, Alaska. I felt nausea after the ride and didn’t realize it’s motion sickness until after dinner. I felt better soon after I put Motioneaze on. It does have a minty smell though.

I can't do Gravol and stay awake at all. I'm going on my first cruise in about 3 weeks and I have the ginger pills, getting the sea bands, and I have the patch that contains scopolamine. I hope that will do it because I don't want to miss my first cruise drugged and sleeping in my cabin for the whole week

Our family doctor gave us the excellent advice before our first cruise to "test-drive" the medicines we were planning to take by first taking them on a weekend day at home, to check for side-effects (a small percentage of people get sick *from* the scopolamine patches), then while going for a drive on a winding road, or anything else that tended to make us sick. That way, by the time we boarded our cruise we knew we had what worked, and knew how we reacted to the medication.

I'm not exactly sure what causes my motion sickness. Maybe it's related to the inner ear? I'll even get motion sick playing video games! Usually when there is a lot of movement. I have avoided rides and roller coasters for years, but would like to see what I can enjoy at Disney with my family.
You should probably experiment a little to better understand the nature of it, or talk to your family physician. That sounds like a pretty pronounced version, but if video games do it, then simulator rides where you stay stationary are probably ruled out. You would have to experiment with the better simulator rides where you move with the action to see if they impact you (think FOP).

Do you suffer from it when driving on winding roads? Note I mean when you are driving, or a front seat passenger actually watching the road - not paying attention or restricted view puts you right back into the eye/ear thing. If that driving doesn't bother you, then I would start with a mild coaster to see how you handle it - maybe 7DMT would be a good place to start, then take it from there. Splash Mountain would be a really good ride too, really only the one drop, no time to get motion sick. If you can tolerate those well, I would give BTM a try; there is a lot of motion, but you can always see where you are spatially, so it may not upset you too much.

I haven't spoken to my doctor, but it wouldn't hurt before the trip. I don't have any problems in the car. Good suggestion to just take things one ride at a time and start with some of the more family friendly rides.

I thought I had found the solution for my motion sickness in Bonine, without the drowsiness. Actually, it worked great for my first four Disney trips. Then I went on a RCCL cruise (Oasis of the Seas) with a friend and I could not stay awake! All I had to do was sit down and I would start nodding off. I took it in the evening, like many suggest, but I was sleepy all the time. I most definitely felt the ship moving all the time, but at least I wasn't motion sick. I thought it was just a fluke because it was a ship, instead of other moving things. Well, I felt the same way on my last Disney World trip. I think the difference was that I had quit caffeine a few months prior to my cruise. My guess is that all the other years, my level of drowsiness was counteracted by my caffeine consumption. I can't be certain, but that's my theory. Now that I don't drink caffeine anymore, I'm back to feeling drowsy. So, I don't know what I'll use in the future. At least at Disney World I'm not driving (Magical Express and buses), so I'm not in any unsafe situations.

Try using half the dosage. I only need half a Bonine and it does the trick.

Not OP but thanks to everyone who posted about Bonine. I've ordered off of Amazon and hope it arrives in time before I leave March 1. I'm horrible with motion sickness but am doing Disneyland Paris with daughter and she either rides with me or alone so I'm hoping for the best.

Thanks @ceejayzvan for starting this post, I'm sure it helps out many people.
