I need to get a Mother's helper. It is impossible with my three other children to devote enough one on one time with my first grader while doing homework. She is having a hard time with reading and needs extra help. How much do they get paid and does anyone have experience with this?

This is going to vary greatly depending on your location and age of MH. Around here (a couple of hours from you) the real question would be age and experience. My niece did this at the age of 12 and received about $5/hr which seems pretty reasonable to me. Obviously an older girl/teenager would expect more.

Have you thought about getting a tutor for your 1st grader? We have used tutors over the years when our kids have had problems with school because to be honest, I get frustrated helping them and its better for us to have someone not as close to the situation helping them.

We had a girl come and be a mother's helper when she had passed her babysitting course. She asked $3/hour. Now she babysits for us for $6/hour. She got great experience that has helped her secure more babysitting jobs and I was able to get things done around the house while she was with DS.

If you can possibly do it a tutor prolly is the way to go NOW is the time to fix the problem not patch it over. As we all know patching is a quick fix that sometimes last forever but usually doesn't and then ya need a bigger patch than before.

There are many professional tutoring services out there most of them can do wonders in just a few weeks if the problem is small of course those who have waited till there students have more trouble tends to make more trips to the tutoring sessions.

I had two different mother's helpers this summer who came at different times. Both gals were in college, 20 yo, one was an education major. Now, keep in mind, my youngest two boys have special needs (my 5 yo has some pretty serious mental health issues). So they are more work than your typical child. I paid $12 an hour for the first 10 hours each week, then $15 an hour after that (to keep them wanting to come back). I found having a mother's helper to be invaluable as there is no way I could have worked with either boy otherwise. It was also the only way I could take the boys anywhere (zoo, etc.) One gal I found through a friend who's an advisor for a sorority and the other gal I found on a babysitting referral website. HTH.
