Most overrated food items and restaurants in WDW?

I love to read these kind of threads - I gain a lot of info whether it be good or bad about restaurants and food which helps me decide where I want to try and what opinions people have about food.

We have free DDP so I won't be too upset if we experience a bad meal or restaurant, we'll just dust ourselves down and look forward to the next one :woohoo:

Ohana dessert--but that's because I don't like banans or coconut

Le Cellier--we've had some of our best meals and one of the worst. The worst was bad enough that we're not going back this next trip.

HDDR--KFC at a hoedown

But we love the Dole Whips. My adult kids will make a special trip to MK just to get one.

And this is why we take all the opinions as just that--opinions. Everyone has such different tasts and the restaurants themselves have good/bad days. It's like I told my cousin on one trip--it's just dinner and if it's bad you'll get a do-over tomorrow.

Even though the hubby and I really enjoy HDDR, this made me :rotfl: It's so true but we love it.

Agreed. It's perfectly reasonable for two people to have the exact same meal on the same night and have completely different opinions of it. And sometimes, it really is the case of a good night vs. bad night (one time we went to Artist Point twice in one trip and ordered the exact same items; the first meal was incredible, but the second wasn't great).

Granted, I think some people get a bit too caught up in their opinions (the Le Cellier hate scares me sometimes) and I think you have to try a place at least twice to really get a feel for it, but I always like to see some negative opinions as opposed to all positive (when all you see is positive, it's misleading, since any WDW restaurant can and does serve disappointing meals).

I really dislike the Mickey-shaped ice cream bars :rolleyes1 and the Butterfinger cupcakes.
Ya im with you on the mickey icecream bars. I didnt like them either. Its the taste of the chocolate that i wasnt crazy about.

The Ohana and Ragland Road bread pudding. We have a bistro here that makes it from fresh croissants and it is made to order so I was certainly disappointed in the WDW versions after reading so many "to die for" reviews here.

Le Cellier. All food here is overrated, from the beef to the cheese soup to the pretzel bread.

The Cobb salad at Brown Derby (hate the oatmeal consistency).

I forgot to mention the pretzel bread in my last post. I agree, i wasnt thrilled about it either.

Simple solution... don't read them. No one forces you to open the thread. Some people like to discuss these things and don't mind the bad with the good. People can like what they like... but not everyone is going to like the same thing. Nothing wrong with that and nothing wrong with giving an opinion if they don't like it.
While I understand this sentiment, no one is required to read every thread on these boards. If you don't want to read what people don't like, you don't have to click on it. I personally appreciate the negative opinions as well as the positive ones. It helps me make choices when planning AND experiencing my trip. Of course, everyone is welcome to like what they like. The differences make the world interesting. :)
Yup! I agree. Very well said. you dont like it, dont click on it. Very simple. I like negative threads like this one. :lmao:

California Grill. Don't get it. Noisy insane restaurant. And I've enjoyed my meals at Artist Point and Flying Fish waaayyy better.

I agree with others on the Dole Whips, although my wife likes them.

I'll add school bread here. It was good, but I'd rather have a dunkin donut. I should also add that I've heard others say that they changed the recipe a while back, and the current version is no comparison to the old one. I wonder how many things that have been hyped in the past (and present) are really based on old versions/recipes/etc. when the current offerings just can't compare.

I'm very disappointed to hear negatives about the Butterfinger cupcake. I've been wanting one for years - it looks so good. I'm going to have to try one, though, to make up my own mind.

I love dole whips, although I actually prefer pineapple-vanilla swirl over plain pineapple. And I think the orange dole whip tastes artificial and like medicine - horrible.

Agreed on school bread - in concept I should like it, but it's always kind of stale and disappointing. I much prefer the rice cream in Norway.

And Disney cupcakes overall look much better than they taste, IMO. Way too sweet, the cake itself is generic and not too light, and the frosting is sometimes lardy IMO. I'm actually looking forward to trying babycakes just because Disney cupcakes aren't that appealing overall.

Can I vote virtually all Disney restaurants? Over the years the quality has gone down but yet the prices and hype seem to keep going higher.

Most of the particulars that come to my mind have already been mentioned here (Le Cellier -especially the cheese soup, school bread, Chef Mickey's, dole whips, etc.) but I think one of the most overrated things in general are character meals. They tend to be extremely expensive with mediocre food and your kids get all of 30 seconds with each character. I think most kids would be perfectly fine with meeting their favorite character out in the park.

Dolewhips are nothing special IMHO. Theyre good, but not WOW like some other ppl claim. I prefer the citrus swirl (orange-vanilla) over the pineapple. Tastes much better to me.

Exactly my sentiment. The orangesicle was REALLY good, the pineapple was not.

My biggest problem with the new gormet cupcake fad overall, everywhere, is that the frosting usually needs to be refrigerated, so the whole cupcake is refrigerated, and that dries out the cake part.

Surprised to see that people actually like the orange dole whip. The original citrus swirl (which used real frozen orange juice) was delicious, but the current one (aka orange dole whip or orange-vanilla swirl) makes me gag.

I didn't care for Boma zebra domes nor the carrot cake cookie at Writer's Stop in DHS, which everyone seems to rave about. I was really disappointed.

I love Dole whips and Mickey bars though! :lovestruc:lovestruc

What are in your opinion the most overrated food items and restaurants in WDW?

For me and DH it's the jungle juice in Tusker House, the dessert in 'Ohana, funnel cake and the whole Hoop De Doo Revue. People seem to rave about those a lot, but we think they're just ok, neither of us really get what the hype is all about!

I actually disagree about the bread pudding at Ohana! I am not a HUGE fan of bread pudding, but OMG Love Ohanas. I've since been diagnosed with Celiacs and its the thing I am MOST going to miss in Disney! LOL!

I totally agree with those that say the dole whips. I tried it twice because the first time I thought I had to have gotten a "bad" one LOL! Nope just not that great IMO!

The only meals we weren't thrilled about were at
Boma-- none of us really cared for anything, not horrible but not our style either.
Narcoosee's- portions way too small and they had some lemon mashed potatoes that were disgusting to us.
On the other hand, we LOVED all of our counter service meals. Go figure :headache:

So funny how many don't care for the dole whips, I like them alot :rotfl:

My last trip, I asked around the boards for snacks to have in the world showcase, and several people recommended the kaki gori in japan, and that was a huge disappointment. I like shaved ice, but it really lacked flavor. Never again!

And it's boards like this that are helpful to trying new things though, because on the other hand, I went for the grey goose slushie instead of the grand mariner, and yes it wasn't strong, but it was yummy lol.

And I have tried many different DTD restuarants, Planet Hollywood (yes, I know it's not a 'disney' res), raglan road, etc, and not too many to choose from that I've really liked. A lot of people rave about different DTD restuarants, and none have been outstanding in my opinion. However, the Wolfgang Puck EXPRESS was actually the best I've had in DTD.

I finally got to try a Main Street Cinnamon Roll Christmas morning. The park opened at 7am and I went straight to the bakery and got one. It was stale and dried out. I think it was from the night before. I was so dissappointed! I had been wanting to try one for years.

Tonga toast...again, yuck. So sickeningly sweet 3 adults couldn't finish one serving. That "stuffing" of hot slimy bananas. Ugh. We love banana bread, but whole bananas heated to slime cosistency. Not good.

ITA! I was so excited about it because I love bananas and french toast but it was just nasty! The bananas were black in mine so I tried to eat just the bread but it was too sweet. I was so disappointed with our entire breakfast at Kona.

For us, it has to be the luau at the Poly. Cheap wine and tough meat - never again. Some rave about it though. :confused3
We didn't think it was great either but some of the seating is really crappy in location too. I'll stick to ones in Hawaii.
