Most overrated Christmas food?

I have to agree with those who said fruitcake. My dad used to make it for himself because no one else liked it. He would freeze it in slices and take it out to eat during the year.

Last week, someone left a homemade cake in the staff room where I work. It looked like fruitcake, but the sign next to it said "gumdrop cake." When I looked more closely, I realized that the colored bits were actually sliced gumdrops. I didn't feel compelled to try it, nor did most other staff members. It looked like a few pieces were gone by the end of the day. Someone kept putting it in the fridge overnight and putting it back on the table on the morning. That thing sat there for four day, mostly untouched. I felt badly for the person who took the time to bake it. But, like myself, I guess most people couldn't imagine what it would taste like.

I love a GOOD fruitcake. Now, some of those pre-packaged ones that people send as gifts, no those are horrible and I think that's what people think of and why fruitcake has a bad name. When it's good though, it's very enjoyable.
My wife literally just pulled two fruitcakes out of the oven. She doesn't like it but our son and I love it so she is making it for us. She is trying out my Aunt's recipe. My Aunt every Christmas sent a gift package of homemade baked goods like fruitcake, nanaimo bars, short bread cookies my entire childhood. Another Aunt also used to make and send fruitcake. And fruitcake has been a part of every wedding for my family in Canada.

Brussels Sprouts? Fruitcake. I didn't know those things were rated all that well to begin with. By my recollection, they're rated rather lowly on average and that's about right by me. Are you saying their low ratings themselves are an over rate? question, too many base that answer on whether they like it or not. If they don't like it it's "over rated" even if it's not really over rated

Unfortunately when you ask the over rated under rated question, too many base that answer on whether they like it or not.
While I love brussel sprouts, I can see that some don't like them. And I get some don't like fruitcake, however, have you tried to FIND a fruitcake in the store? It's the first thing they sell out of this time of year. And they aren't cheap. So SOMEONE is buying a lot of fruitcake.

I believe there never were any fruitcakes in the store and people are just regifting fruitcakes left over from the 60s. You've heard of the gift that keeps on giving. Well this is the gift that keeps getting given. HAHAHA.

This year there were a lot of European cousins to American Fruitcake in our stores. You can still find some. I'm a fan of Stollen, but not fruitcake.

There were big displays of fruitcake at my grocery store and at Walmart the week after Thanksgiving. I thought, I'll pick one up next week (despite the $29 price tag at my grocery store). I couldn't. They were all sold out according to the store staff.

Brussel sprouts are the bomb, definitely the most favorite vegetable here. We have lots of trendy restaurants here, the majority have sprouts on the menu as an appetizer or side. I didn’t know they were considered a Christmas food though.

Traditional candy canes are horrid - and I echo the poster that says anything made from them or peppermint extract is the same.

Traditional fruitcake is also horrid - cherries should never be neon green. That said, this is a redeemable item, unlike peppermint extract. You can make a very good cake with fruit that isn't the brick of artificial alcoholic gross of the original, but is a tasty light fresh not-to-sweet cake that is reminiscent of the best parts of the original.

I like fruitcake! I also like mince pie, but as I am the only person in my family who'll eat either, I don't have them very often. (FTR, I like Brussels sprouts, too.)
