Thought this news article would be of interest to those Canadians flying to the US in the next few days ...

U.S.-bound air travellers were forced to stow all but the bare essentials in their checked luggage Monday as Transport Canada issued a new ban on almost all carryon luggage.

The prohibition is intended to get planes running on schedule after time-consuming new security measures introduced on Saturday caused lineups, delays and cancellations across North America, spokesman Patrick Charette said.

RCMP officers also were called in to help implement the new measures, which include hand-searches of all carry-on luggage and physical pat-downs before boarding.

"We are asking travellers to please limit the items you are bringing on," Charette said. "We are doing what we can to facilitate the normal flow of passengers."

The complete ban on carry-on luggage is expected to be in effect until 7 p.m. tonight. Both Air Canada and WestJet are temporarily waiving fees for extra bags.

Transport Canada issued a list of 13 items that are exempt from the new policy. Passengers can still carry-on small purses, coats, laptops, cameras, musical instruments and baby-care supplies. Medication, crutches, canes, walkers, medical devices, special needs items and containers carrying life sustaining items are also exempt.

"Technically, if it is not on the list, it is not allowed," Charette said.

However, he said security personnel can exercise discretion at the gate.

Edmonton International Airport spokeswoman Donna Call said the new rules mean all backpacks and rolling suitcases must be checked. Books, magazines and even children's toys must also be checked, she said. Finally, even exempt items will be limited, which means that a single passenger cannot carry-on a purse, a coat, a laptop and a diaper bag.

However, small electronic devices such as iPods and portable DVD players will be allowed on board, Call said, and passengers are free to purchase books, magazines, snacks and water once they are through security.

"The incident on Dec. 25 has risen the security alert to an extreme level and that has led to this direction," she said.

Around noon on Christmas Day, 23-year-old Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab allegedly tried to blow up a Detroit-bound plane as it descended into Detroit Metro Airport with 278 passengers aboard.

The man was tackled by passengers, foiling what officials called an attempted terror attack.

Hours later, the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority rolled out strict new security measures, including individual pat-downs before boarding.

Makes me want to change my flights in March since we are on UAL & I know they will not waive the bag fee! Not to mention that my kids (2 & 6) will implode with nothing to play with... One can only watch so many DVD shows.

Also, I like that you have to choose... coat or purse... did they forget that it is WINTER and half the time you do not get a jet way?

Also, they will be having a lot of fun come the Olympics.

If you read the Transport Canada release, it does state "These measures are expected to be in place at least for several days." ... so hopefully by time March rolls around things will have worked themselves out.

Yeah, I find the choosing between coat and other stuff a bit stupid. Not everybody is flying to a warm place and even Orlando is cold at this time.

What happens if you wear one of those vests that has a ton of pockets? ;)

I'm only being partly facetious here... Men typically put their wallet, passport and keys in their pockets while women put theirs in purses. So... is this not a bit discriminating to have to choose between a coat and a purse?

I also like how they say we can buy a bunch of crap AFTER we go through security. I wonder if they'll supply a bag to put that stuff in ... and in Toronto will they charge us 5 cents? :rotfl:

<sigh> I just wish some department of authority would come out and just say what exactly we can do. What size is a "small purse"? Can we bring a coat, camera bag and laptop? Or a coat, purse and camera? or.... What exactly is the rule? That's the most frustrating thing.

First off, Hi Pxlbarrel. It is nice to see such a close neighbour here! (same town!)

We are going to be driving down to WDW in a couple days, and flying back. So are the restictions the same for flying INTO Toronto?

From what I can read and understand, the restrictions do not apply when you're flying from the States to Canada. However, your flight may be delayed if the plane that's going to take you home is delayed leaving Toronto.

Driving down, eh and flying back. That's a novel approach. What are you doing with the car? That's probably over the weight limit for check in. ;)

My BF's parents have a home in Florida as well. So we drive their car down for them so they can fly. We also go back in April to drive the car back home for them. It gives us an excuse to go to Disney twice a year! :thumbsup2

Unless they go back to the old rules prior to this change, next December my family and I will be driving to WDW. Plus I am sure others might consider doing that or flying out of various United States cities, so it could hurt the Airline business across Canada.

Now tomorrow my family and I are flying back home on WestJet from Tampa - Toronto, so at least we can have our carryon bags with us and it's going to be intresting to see these new security changes in person.

That's old news from a few days ago. They lifted some of the inflight restrictions and made it the Captain's decision to whether to implement some of the restrictions depending on how the flight was going.

As far as I can see, the carry on restrictions for Canadians going to the States still remains. I can't see them removing it, if they're going to remove the no carry on restriction, until after this holiday weekend. But I can't see them keeping it afterwards when all the business travellers start working and travelling again after the holidays. But... who can tell... :confused3

DH said we should just shove pockets full... LOL! Do we get an allowance for our airport spending? And what if we have to connect and clear security again (like in Toronto) we have to toss it all and buy again. Can this be a government funded program? Maybe have a swap system with others in the terminal like some DVC people have with beach chairs at Vero Beach? LOL!

I think all that has been changed is the not moving around the aircraft cabin during the last hour of the flight. Carry ons are still restricted. I am flying next Thursday to Florida and not looking forward to squishing into a small purse which I don't have anyways! Mine is more Mary Poppins like!:confused3

GTAA announced carry on restrictions would remain in place until January 4th 2010. We were hoping to fly using only a carry on each but will have to check a bag now and go to baggage claim.
