Peta, who I respect for wanting to protect animals, wants Ben & Jerry's to start making their ice cream from human breast milk! I couldn't believe this. Their reasoning is that milking the cows is somewhat harmful to the animal. Now, I have never breast fed, but from what I understand, pumping breast milk is no picnic either. There are millions of gallons of ice cream made each year. Where would you get all that breast milk? I just thought it was interesting to say the least.

What do you guys think?

I have breastfed both dd's and it was not fun, there was pain involved at times - I've also used a breast pump and it's not something I want to do again - that is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of - do they know how much milk comes out of a human versus a cow?

I have also breastfed and while I didnt find it to uncomfortable myself I have heard terrible stories from others. Now using a pump on the other hand is painful and to be honest there just isnt that much milk in a single pumping. I would like to know where they plan on getting enough milk to even make a gallon of ice cream

While I fully support PETA to an extent...That's insane.
I don't remember where I read this, and I could be wrong...but I heard somewhere that milking the cow is actually a relief for them. I could be wrong though.

And isn't breast milk sour? I don't know about you...but I like my ice cream just the way it is.

Could you imagine premium bars with breast milk...

Yes - pumping is a relief for a cow, just as it is a relief for a human! If you've ever had an engorgement, you would understand completely!!!!

I breastfed both of my daughters and actually the milk is rather sweet, due to the molecular and chemical components. The flavor can change to reflect what you've eaten, but the sugar content in boths species (cow and human) of milk is somewhat similar. Same for goat, as well, which is sometimes recommended for children who have issue with cow.

Also, breast milk can change on a daily basis depending on what the nursing mother has eaten, as well as the fat content -- will these "milk maids" be placed on a special diet to enhance the flavor of the ice cream? PETA has definitely lost some credibility with this one!

Is there anyone who wouldn't feel this way? Sheesh! I'm sorry, but I would not eat or drink milk from the breast of a random woman who could be eating anything and living any type of lifestyle with remnants of whatever passing through her milk (toxins, heavy metals, chemical and medicine residues, etc). I don't see how this proposition is even feasible unless these women were somehow strictly regulated in diet and lifestyle as well as medically cleared. And I don't see how that would be anymore humane than milking a cow.

And even if all this were made with "regulated" women, I would still have to get over the weird thought of ingesting fluid from another woman's breast. I suppose maybe that isn't different than drinking goat or cows milk, but mentally I would have to make some big adjustments.

Why doesn't PETA just advocate getting icecream from goats or cows that are humanely treated (free range, no hormones or anitibiotics, etc.)? It doesn't seem like they thought that one out real well.

As a breastfeeding Mum currently I would be blowed if I would waste any of it to make into ice-cream. When I express it it is treated like liquid gold. I spilt some once I just about cried it was about 40 mins of work.

Stupid idea, and Peta wonder why some people don't take their issues seriously.

Now that is nutso. Using the pump was a huge pain and what little I got out was gaurded like Ft. Knox. To this day that sound of a pump is like I am one of Pavlovs dogs.

Don't you see? This is the whole point.

PETA says and does crazy things to get people talking about animal rights. And while there are some PETA followers that will follow their ideas to a tee, the higher ups in the organization are just trying to get their message across.
They don't actually want breast-milk ice cream.

And when anyone says the're crazy, they can pull this out of their hat: why is is gross/inhumane when it's a human and not an animal?

Why is it gross to drink human breast milk and not cow breast milk?
Why is it gross to carry a human leather purse and not a snakeskin purse?
And while I'm not a 100% vegetarian and I do in fact own leather items, I agree with them on certain issues and most of the time, see their point. That said, I wish that the would conduct themselves in a more professional manner as I think it would make them more powerful (plus it wouldn't make the rest of us animal lovers look like complete loons)

First, it is more humane to milk women then cows because the women would have a choice. But that's a debate I really don't want to get into

But, just so you know, cow breast milk also changes flavor depending on what the cow ate. They are kept on strict diets to keep it consistent.

Oh, and personally I think PETA has already lost most of their credibility by shoving fur-covered models off the runway
