Mosquitoes ??

We usually go to WDW during june/july almost every year. I always buy an insect repellant when we arrive (Most of the efficient types are not legal here)

We will be going to WDW in the second half of December, and DH and I were talking about how big a problem mosquitoes were going to be in December

I've read some previous posts saying that following the hurricanes this was a big problem - but is this still the case ??

We're staying at POR and are planning to use the boat service to DTD in the evening so I could imagine that could be a time where the mosquitoes could cause trouble :boat:

There are no mosquitos at Disney World! :teeth:

Seriously, we've gone in early December 3 years in a row and I swear I've not once seen a mosquito. (Got stung by a bee last year though!) Your mileage may vary.

They follow me around (an bite me) like I am the queen mosquito. People who I am around thank me for keeping the mosquitos away from them. That said on our visit earlier this month I only got two mosquito bites and those were received while on two different fireworks cruises. Don't believe them when they say there are none, if they like you they will find you but I didn't have enough of a problem to actually use repellent. That stuff is nasty.

My sister and I just got back a few days ago. She always seems to attract one or two bites from something and I rarely do.

We stayed at POR and although we saw a mosquito in the room (which I managed to kill) there were no bites there.

We also stayed at the Polynesian and she got a couple of bites there - out on the balcony watching "Wishes". One was most likely a mosquito bite - the other was much different and we guessed maybe a spider bite???

Unfortunately some people just attract them more than others do - and you probably already know who you are.

Thank you all for your answers. Yes I know what type of mosquito person I am. My DH says I'm the best insect repellant around - for him that is

Well I'll jiust get the repellant and keep my fingers crossed

Thanks for the heads up !! I never would have thought that the mosquitoes were still active in Dec (although I should have, they don't die off until the first frost here). Many people don't realize the threat of West Nile Virus, but since we lost my healthy, 52 yo brother in law to this horrible disease last year, we have become very much aware. In 2003 there were 9,862 confirmed (treated) cases in the US and, unfortunately, 264 deaths (8 of those in Fla in the past 2 years). In August BWV even had printed warnings and prevention methods in the rooms - I was thrilled to see them taking those kinds of precautions to warn us and keep us safe - this is a totally preventable disease that you can't get if you don't get bitten (a real challenge here in NJ !!).
I'll be throwing some repellant 'wipies' into my back pack - better safe than sorry !! :smooth:

Mosquitos are terrible right now. I'm one big walking bite! I was out sweeping my front porch about 15 minutes ago and killed 3 on my door. Be prepared!

We were at WDW Nov 13 - 19 and DH kept remarking on the remarkable insect control they have there. We encountered only one mosquito in the queue for HM. That was the only bug of any kind we saw.

In December, I wouldn't bother with insect repellent.

I know nothing about mosquito patterns in Florida. Can someone tell me what they are like the first week of July?

Ali

I haven't been in Florida long enough to know patterns, but this has been a really strange year. Due to the hurricanes, the mosquito population is up.

We will be in WDW later this month and I never even thought about bringing bug spray (or shorts for that matter). It snowed here today (plus it was VERY cold) so I guess I will just have to change my mindset a bit.

I don't remember any mosquitos when I was there last December ... of course I remember wearing long sleeved shirts and pants out a couple of nights so maybe I just didn't notice them.

I have to say that when we showed up in Sept. after the hurricanes, there were a ton of them around.

I would bring the spray, just in case. If it's really cold during that time, there won't be any mosquitoes. This being Florida, however, it may not be cold. Enjoy!

For those of you like me who hate bug spray, Wal Mart sells those glow in the dark bug repellent coils back in the lawn and garden area. I think they're like $1.98 apiece. Put one on an arm and another on the opposite leg and they work like a charm. Mosquitoes love me, but I used these all summer (even down in San Antonio--the mosquito capital of the world) and never got a single bite. I wore them to my GD's soccer and baseball games and while everyone else was being eaten I didn't get a single bite. I bought some more for my son and GD to use while in WDW. An added bonus is that they glow in the dark, so we will be able to keep up with each other after nighttime shows. I also bought six extra ones just in case we lost a pair or I saw someone down there who was being eaten alive.
