I seem to remember many moons ago that a few DISers used to recommend Avon's Skin So Soft as an insect repellant.

Last night I looked on both the US and UK versions of Avon's website for the likely product. I spotted Skin so Soft Bug Guard on the US site, but couldn't see any mention of it on the UK one.

I decided to send an email to Avon to find out if it was available in the UK. This is the answer I got:

''We have had reports from Representatives and their customers that Avon Skin-So-Soft, Soft and Fresh (known originally as Woodland Fresh fragrance) Bath Oil and Dry Oil Body Spray acts as an effective insect repellent.

Our Quality Control Department advise that it is the aroma of the product that has this effect. Citronella is in the perfume and as fragrance oils are ‘propriety compositions’ and the property of the vendor, due to vendor confidentiality, we list this ingredient as Parfum. However this product is marketed and sold by us as a bath preparation only. We would not recommend any Skin-So-Soft product for any other use. Unfortunately, Skin-So-Soft products in any other fragrance do not contain the same ingredients as the original Soft and Fresh.''

:confused3 It doesn't really answer my question, so I wondered if any of you out there had any experience of using it.

Yes, it's definitely the original Skin-So-Soft products which are reputed to have the desired effect. We used the spray many years ago following recommendations here, but I can't remember whether or not it worked! Hilary is our resident expert. :)

LOL! ;)

Well, I have used it, but I can't claim to have any scientific results on whether it works! I like the smell anyway, and prefer it to Citronella :) However, whether I use Skin-So-Soft, Citronella or Deet-based products, I still seem to get bitten at least a couple of times on most trips. :confused3

I'm now just using any repellant I have, and am trying out different ways of reducing the effect of the inevitable bites instead!

People I know swear by the soft and fresh dry oil body spray. Avon always seem to do offers on it as well so keep a look out!

Paul O'Grady mentioned it the other night on his show - he used it when he went to Africa or somewhere and swears by it. There was also an American lady on the show (I think one of the Supremes) and she agreed that it was the best repellent out there.

My Mom and I also swear by this stuff, I stocked up a while ago so am still using the "woodland fresh" version. It's better than a repellant though, kill 2 birds with 1 stone and moisturise too! :)

I used it a few years back and I thought it was brilliant...keep meaning to order some for this years holiday and see if it works on the kiddies.

I bought Avon Skin-So-Soft, Soft and Sensual - looks like I got the wrong one :confused3

My friend is an avon rep....i will order some :) i suffer terribly with mossie bites.

Ordered some today - it was buy one get one free so i paid £5.00 for 2.

Hope it keeps those blighters away! :woohoo:

We have been using this for years.. It is the Soft and fresh, DRY OIL SPRAY.
It certainly works for us.
We have a morning ritual in Florida, Bath or shower then sun lotion then spray all over with dry oil spray. :goodvibes

Thanks for all the replies. Think I'll order some. We go to Iceland next month (already had our Florida trip for this year) and there's an area we are visiting that's well-known for its insect population at mid-summer.

We used this when we went to Zante a couple of years ago - three out of four of us found it really worked however my DD who has sensitive skin found that it dried her skin out so severely that it all split and cracked. She was in a lot of pain with it and we ended up having to go to the Doctor for some cream.

That is the one-works amazing. I like it because it doesn't have that awful bug spray smell..LOL. I sell Avon and am a Certified Beauty Advisor. Feel free to contact me if your have questions about any of the products..:lovestruc
