Mosquito Control

While staying at Pop Century in December 2003 we noticed a warning about the ever present mosquito problem. Since we are planning to camp in Fort Wilderness in June this seems to be even more of an eminent problem. We are staying in a 22 ft. travel trailer, but plan on bringing a cabanna and/or screened kitchen tent. We hate the smell of citronella and cannot tolerate most spray insect repellants. Mr. OriginalRabbit even dislikes the old standby of Avon's Skin-so-Soft. What do all of you do about the mosquito problem? Are there any effective, yet decent smelling repellents? Do we have to spend our vacation in long pants and long sleeved shirts? We have camped off site before but do not recall mosquitoes being a real problem - only one year we had an infestation of gnats aiming for our eyes constantly. Please help us prevent living our summer vacation in "It's a Bug's Life!"

We've only ever noticed the mosquitoes once--very early one morning when we were loading the bikes to head home. We became quite a 'bug buffet' then!

We have a far greater problem with the deer flies. Those suckers really bite and my sister is allergic to them. We are taking some very lightweight long pants and shirts in case they are around.

Avon also has some real bug repellent that is not "skin so soft". I have a child that is very allergic to bug bites and we have good luck w/ the avon products. Also, there are some wipes I think by OFF that are easy to use on the neck and face. If I can put my hands on the avon products to get the name, I'll post again ( I think they are stowed in the camper)

We camped for 9 days last June. None of us received a single bite and we didn't use bug spray of any kind. We even went to the movie at the campfire and watched the water pageant a couple of times. I was really surprised...they must spray constantly.

Thanks for relieving our worries about the bugs. All we've got to worry about now is that we're itching to get there SOON!! Again, thanks for all of your help!

We only had a problem once... it was in Dec 2002 and FL had been experiencing a serious drought. The first couple days we were in Disney (while the weather was still nice), we never saw a skeeter. Torrential rains hit and the stagnent water in the canals exploded in the heavy rains overnight. We woke up with the interior of the camper infested!!! I called the front desk and they sent someone out to treat the canals (we were backed up to the canal in loop 200) but couldn't help us inside. We lit an Off coil (which work great and don't smell like bug repellant!! ) chased all of our visitors (at least the ones we didn't squish ) out. Never saw one again after that!!
