Mosiac pages?

Has anyone ever done a mosiac page without a template? I would like to do the Epcot Spaceship Earth as a round mosiac ball but can't figure out spacing...I was going to cut the pictures into triangles instead of squares to make it look more like spaceship earth but could really use some suggestions!

but used squares. I am sure you could do this by cutting into
squares and then cutting the square into two triangles (clear as mud?)

I don't know how I would go about it. Maybe I'd make the circle as a pattern, draw the markings on it, then cut the photos to match my pattern?

If you do this please show it to us when you are done. It sounds interesting!

My first (and only) attempt at a mosaic page was of Epcot. I had several "scenery" pictures and they made a great mosaic. I used a self healing mat with grids and cut the pictures into 1 inch squares. I used a metal ruler and a rotary cutter and it turned out beautiful. I found it was also easier to run the long strips through the xyron with repositionable tape and they were very easy to adhere to the page, plus stayed put on the the mat. Good luck, it turned out great, I'll try to post tomorrow a picture.

I've done a few mosaic pages (all without templates) and they all turned out great except for one but I always used squares. I imagine that triangles would be much more tricky so I would do as another poster suggested and make a paper pattern before cutting up the actual photos.
