Morning sickness (all day) HELP.

I am old enough to remember thalidomide, so no way was I taking any drugs for morning sickness. After months of constant morning sickness and trial and error, I found what worked for me was:

1. Animal protein: eggs, bacon, sausage, yogurt, cheese, steak, milk.
2. Starting off my day with substantial calories with a lot of animal protein. For example, my typical breakfast was 2 eggs, toast, 2 sausage, glass of 1% milk. That was the ONLY breakfast that actually stayed down and made my stomach happy. Note that I have never eaten like that before or since my pregnancy, but that combination was what worked to combat the vomiting/nausea and also gave me energy.
3. Never letting my stomach get empty. (So yes, I was getting up in the night to eat. Hey, it was better than getting up to vomit.)

As soon as dd was born, the nausea went away. But before that, if I skipped a meal, I'd be sick again.

It's likely that your morning sickness will taper off after 12 weeks, and I know it feels like forever but most people do not have it the whole pregnancy.

I only threw up once a day with my boys, about 3 times a day with my dd, but I had awful nausea that lasted all day. I couldn't even look at the food in the refrigerator, I had to close my eyes to reach in and grab it!

The doc gave me a combo of a B vitamin...b6 maybe? I don't remember, and phenergan. It did take the edge off, but I only took it very minimally. It is safe and I should have taken it as directed but I just wanted to be extra careful.

I did NOT take my prenatal vitamins. They made everything worse. My kids are almost completely normal. ;)

If you feel like eating it, whatever it is, eat it. If it's it's Pringles and sprite, then so be it. Do not eat something that is not appetizing. Ad it's different for everyone and different from day to day. I loved dairy and could always get down cheese and milk.

Make sure you drink enough fluids, and again just whatever tastes good. get enough sleep. You aren't nauseous when sleeping!

Morning sickness can be debilitating and b/c men don't get it; it is too often brushed aside as nothing. I know how hard it is to get through, and it is truly awful.

Take care of yourself!

I suffered also. It was so bad that I went to the ER with my first. I had a wonderful new intern who put me on an IV and told me that if I even felt like I was getting dehydrated to come back. As long as my body was hydrated I was able to add a little bit of foods while continuing to keep the fluids in.

OP I would recommend that if you are dehydrated do not feel bad to have to go get a saline IV (or whatever it is) and keep your body hydrated it really helped me.

I also made sure to eat prior to leaving the bedroom. I sucked on lemons covered with sugar, then had a spoonful of peanut butter. It took a while to then be able to eat, but I was able to drink.

Sunflower seeds were the only thing that worked for me. The regular, in shell and salted. I would pop in a handful, suck off the salt, eat the seed and spit out the shell. Not sure why it worked, I figured maybe it was the salt.

The best thing that worked for me has been peanut butter crackers and lemon heads. I have heard green apple jolly ranchers can help too. Hope you are on the men's soon! I know how much is sucks. I am right there with you.

Anything work for you? My doctor told me to eat saltines, I told her it is not helping I can't keep them down and she said all I can do is to hang in there. I called in sick to work d/t nausea and vomiting before I knew I was pregnant a few weeks ago and I do not want to call out again but this is AWFUL. I am miserable. I get hungry, I take a bite or two and then I pay for it for hours. I feel horrible. I work 12 hour shifts, so missing one is a big deal. But 12 hours is a long time to try to get through when you feel horrible.

Go in!

It sounds like you might have hyperemesis gravidum. I had it and it was awful. Just awful. Zofran is a great drug if you are able to get it. But sometimes they need to use other methods to get you under control.

My story: I could not function. If I got out of bed, I started puking what little I kept down. I had small children and they were not being cared for - I couldn't even make it to work. My husband cared for them when he was not at work, and while he was at work, they went to my mothers. I had an awful OB/GYN who didn't listen until I ended up in the hospital and had lost massive amounts of weight. She just ignored me. I was a peds / OB nurse! I finally showed up when she was out of state and her partner saw me, reviewed my chart and saw the weight loss - and freaked. I also had anemia that was severe. I guess that no nutrition and severe weight loss for months will do that. Then I finally got to a point where I could return to work, it was literally to the point where I could to a room, run out and puke, and somehow walk out smiling and go out and do my job. It became a big joke at work (I was working as a peds nurse). But I vomited and had issues up until the day of delivery. Usually hyperemesis will resolve by the 5th month of pregnancy. I think mine was still going strong by the 7th month, but I was at least functioning at that point.

I also have a crummy premature labor story that is off topic - I won't bore you with that either. Needless to say, I fired that doc.

OP, please tell the doctor how you are doing. If what they tell you doesn't work, tell them again. There are better meds out there that they can use for you that will help you stay functional. Squeeky wheel.

For some reason, dietary wise: flat coke (as in a melted shushy) and lemonaid and ruffles chips - that helped at times for me.

My first pregnancy I had great difficulty with all day morning sickness. It was in the 80's so different time.

Honestly, I learned to put something in my stomach every hour whether I was hungry or not. A cracker, fruit, peanut butter ( I lived on peanut butter) bananas. Not letting my stomach get empty helped a GREAT DEAL. While it didn't cure it, I certainly still felt 'off', I didn't throw up as much.

Its been a while, but once you get in the cycle, it throws your potassium levels off and the constant sickness. Bananas are a good thing right now. I had a hard time because 'smells' made me sick. I ended up putting vicks on my nostrils a couple times. I could handle the horrid smell of vicks but a banana and I was praying to the porcelain God.

I hope you feel better soon. As others have suggested speak to your dr. Times have certainly changed. Drs are more inclined to prescribe something now.

DD21 has afternoon sickness instead of morning sickness. They gave her Zofran. It seems to be working pretty good since they upped the dosage of it. Good luck and congratulations!!

I always had horrible morning sickness....all of my pregnancies. Even the two miscarriages I had..as soon as they did the D/C, the symptomns went away!! It was really something to experience.

My first pregnancy was in the mid-70's, the last one in the mid-90's. The first time I was given Compazine...highly allergic to that one and almost died. After that I refused any meds!!!

I found the few things that I could tolerate and existed on them. The first time around it was Hawaiian Punch!!! Still can't drink that without feeling sick!!!
My last pregnancy, in '93, I found that baked potatoes were a gift from the gods!!! Also loved grape ginger ale and potato chips. Our church had this punch that I craved!!! One of the few things that I could drink constantly and feel terrific after.

Try not to let your stomach get empty. Try eating whatever it is you can tolerate every few hours, at least. Keep crackers (I like Wheat Thins the last time around) close at hand and snack on them. As soon as your stomach gets empty, it all gets worse!!!

I had morning sickness from about a month in, until about 7/8 months. I never threw up though!!! I wanted to since I would feel so much better if I did..but no, I just sat there, feeling miserable. But once I got to the 7 month stage, things started getting better.

Good luck!!!

Zofran was my friend as well. My insurance company would only pay for 15 pills each month so I would break those little pills in half to make it through each day. It didn't make me feel completely normal, but I could function. It is a miserable feeling. I have two kiddos and I was sick the whole 9 months with each of them.

Sea Bands helped take the edge of mine so I could function. ALso, any type of sour candy helped as well. I was going through a box a day for a while.

Another thing that I did was to sip water in between bouts of sickness. It didn't necessarily help the nausea, but on the days where nothing stayed down, it helped having something in my stomach to actually throw up (I know, TMI) as opposed to dry heaves.

Sunflower seeds in the shell. I ate them constantly on my way to work in the car. I had to get a new car shortly after I delivered ds#2 - I couldn't stand the shells everywhere. :rolleyes1

I had all day sickness with all 3 of my kids but it was so much worse with my last son. The ONLY thing that helped me was Dramamine/Bonine/Meclazine! It was a godsend to me!!! It made me tired but at least I could eat and then go to sleep!!! Sometimes it amazes me that the human race continues when so many of us suffer so badly with sickness ;)

In case you were all wondering, I threw up in my purse on my way to work this morning. :sad2: I need to start carrying MULTIPLE barf bags.I was stuck in traffic and couldn't get out and I panicked it came too fast. Good thing it was a cheap bag. I felt fine when I left the house. And, funny thing is, now I feel pretty good for the moment. Lemonade has helped a lot. Pineapple, sherbet, and my biggest craving has been strawberry ice cream. Odd thing, I have never really eaten it in my life but I can't get enough of it. I have lost 4 lbs so far, which can't be good. I know I am dehydrated. The hardest part is that I am not ready to tell work that I am expecting. But if I start hauling around barf bags and using them, I won't be able to hide it much longer. I did throw up at work on Friday, but in my defense, my patient threw up first and that made me get sick.

I think all this puking is a good way of training my husband. He used to be intolerant to barf, but he seems to be getting conditioned to it a little at a time.

Anyway I need to ZOFRAN. I need it. I must have it. I am waiting for the NP to call me back from the office. I might just head over there at lunch and share my pukefest if they aren't willing to give me something. I'll have a snack on the way just in case they want to see me in action.

The dry heaves are the WORST!!!!!

I'm so sorry!! I've been there and done that. I'd seriously go buy some less drowsy dramamine on the way to the dr. but that's just me! I hope you get some relief soon and seriously eat whatever you can keep down regardless of what that is!!!

My dr suggested vitamin B6 and unisom taken together which worked for a short time. When that stopped working I went on Zofran which I stayed on until the day DD was born. The puking was very unpleasant

I had late day morning sickness with DD. I craved and drank a ton of orange juice with her. Since my sickness hit later in the day I could make it through a good part of the work day before I felt too bad. Mostly severe nausea, I'd never actually vomit. But I tried to eat a big breakfast and lunch because I knew by evening I wouldn't feel like eating.

With DS I had all day morning sickness from about 9 each morning. I drank a ton of gingerale with him and found that salt and vinegar chips helped a little with the nausea.

Thankfully mine ended around 12 or so weeks with both kids.

ETA: and sour candies helped with DS. Like sour patch kids or something along those lines.

I cut out caffeine when I got pregnant both times but if I was feeling particularly bad I would let myself have a coke which would usually help for a little bit.

UPDATE!!!!! Zofran is my new best friend! They gave me 4mg every 8 hours and that made me feel slightly better, but then they bumped me up to 8mg and I feel almost normal! It does not last 8 hours but I am feeling so much better. I still don't have much of an appetite but I am feeling so much better. Thanks everyone for the advice and support.
