My son and I made a reservation for Morimoto this summer, but I saw that a reservation could be made to sit at the sushi bar as well. Is there a real difference in any way?

We will be eating sushi, but aren't too adventurous. Will we be missing out on anything or gaining anything by choosing to make a reservation specifically at the bar?

If you are there primarily (or exclusively) there for the sushi, then I would make a reservation for the sushi bar and ask to be seated upstairs. It is pretty neat up there. And you get to see the chefs in action. You certainly won't be missing anything downstairs except the noise. We really enjoyed our meal there, but it is a bit of a zoo in terms of size and acoustics. The more serene sushi bar upstairs looks like this:

Yes, there's a significant difference. As you can see from the great photos that @JimmyV posted, the sushi bar is a very intimate setting where you can watch the chef's do their thing. For a sushi lover, this has to be a big draw. While you can get the exact same sushi at the regular dining tables, you don't get to watch it being prepared.
