More WDW people *not* heading to DLR, a PTR update 3/5/12

All the previous said, while I really love you on the boards skiingfast....;) I don't think you are thinking with the mind of a cook who shops for their beef at a specialty butcher. You will find something like that very difficult to find here in California. I don't know of any private butchers in their own stores here. I hear about Alton Brown talking about cultivating your fish monger or local butcher, but we only have mega-marts here in CA.

Walmart does not have much in the way of meat if you find one that carries beef. Food4Less does not even carry graded beef! :scared1: Their beef doesn't even qualify for Select which is the lowest grade of beef and the average that is sold in grocery stores.

The best beef can be found at Whole Foods & Bristol Farms, but there are non of those anywhere near DLR, and steaks there sell for $15-30 per pound. The next best bet is Costco, Ralph's or Vons. Some Costcos here now carry Prime Beef and a pretty good price. Ralph's has Choice and Vons has their own thing called "Rancher's Reserve" I don't know where it fits in the WSDA scheme, but it's not bad. Costco Prime Beef runs about $12.99 per pound which is better than you get for choice at Ralph's or Vons.

All you need is good meat cooked lightly on the grills and you'll have a wonderful last night's meal in the villas!

Thank you! Ralph's, I see, is a division of Kroger. One of our local grocery store chains got taken over by Kroger a while back. The cool thing is that I've used our store card at Kroger stores while we've been on vacation. I will have to check with Ralph's and see if our card would work there. I will check into Von's too. Unfortunately, I am not a Costco member (only a Sam's Club in my town).

A BIG Road trip, food talk ALREADY.....and skiingfast and franandaj having a small side beef .....what's not to like about this PTR?

And we still have a whole year ahead of us.... popcorn::

princess::upsidedow

I know! I don't want this to turn into "beefgate" or anything:blush:

Your Kroger card will get you the special prices, but not the local promotions. Von's has something called "Rancher's Reserve" beef. It means nothing in the Government scheme of grades, but it sounds fancy! :lmao:

There is a Sam's Club in Long Beach. I'm not sure how you plan on shopping on arrival day. But I'm sure you'll pass plenty of markets and Sam's on your way to Anaheim.

I'm not sure if I missed it in your earlier posts. Have you chosen your route to Anaheim?

Ah, yes, our route to Anaheim...

Our plan is to take 3 days to drize from IL to AZ, spend some time at Grand Canyon National Park, and take a day to drive to DLR

Both Mapquest and AAA have us doing the same thing from AZ:
I40 to
I15 to
CA60 to
CA57

I have no idea if this is a good way to go or not. We have driven to FL enough times that we know our routes and know when to ignore the Triptik or the GPS. I have never driven to CA.

It looks like Long Beach would be past where we are going. Would the Sam's in Fullerton make more sense?

That sounds like a reasonable travel day. Yes the Sam's in Fullerton would make MUCH more sense. You can hit that first and then get what you weren't able to find there at a market like Ralph's or Von's. That is most likely the best route (depending on trafffic).

Yesterday we were just out in the area near that In-n-Out (up Harbor from DL) and noticed that they are also building a Chick-Fil-A in that area. Also if you head out that night for fast food, there is a Disney Character Warehouse at the outlet mall. Sometimes they have some good deals on clothes or other stuff. Sometimes they don't.

I am in. I love road trips!!

franandaj, I am so with you on the meat. I tend to buy a lot of our meat at Costco. I won't buy it at Walmart or Foodmaxx or the kind. I do buy meat at our local Raley's.

That is kind of funny about the Chick-Fil-A, as DD really isn't a hamburger fan, and I see that In-n-Out has nothing else, really. DD is also the child that after her first trip, decided that she didn't like WDW CS pizza. She also doesn't like jelly, so the PB&J Uncrustables are out, too. She eats a lot of chicken nuggets at WDW

Hello! Nice to have you! :wave2:

Looks like Raley's is a little too far north of us this trip. Oh well.

Since you said she doesn't like WDW CS pizza she's probably not into grilled cheese. You might want to check out In-n-Out's "secret menu"

In-n-Out Secret Menu

Raley's is a Northern California chain, I've like them in Tahoe and some other places I've run into them, but none are down in So Cal. Stater Bros, is another chain with pretty good food.

I will have to remember Stater Brothers.

My aunt lives near a Stater Bros. She loves taking me there!

We did check out the "Secret Menu". Alas, the grilled cheese comes on a bun, so it is unacceptable  Actually, she will eat a hamburger without the bun, so maybe we will try that.

Stater Bros is now on my list too. I am guessing that when we actually shop, we will go to Sam's and then use the GPS to find another grocery store to hit on the way to DLR. Now I have a few names to look for :thumbsup2

My daughter even at 18 will not eat the crusted on bread, so I have always wondered why hamburger buns were acceptable.

So would protein style work?

They'll do any burger protein style, so you don't have to get the double-double, the cheeseburger would be fine too.

Are we settled on In n Out for your D1 dinner or is frozen pizza still there? A few of us following your PTR were discussing purchasing CPK at a grocery story (Vons) on another thread.

I believe pizza is for arrival night when they are at VGC. In-n-Out was for the 2nd night at HOJO's with no kitchen.

Oh...I missed the HoJo bit. Thought she was staying at the villas with a kitchen and having mac n cheese. :teeth:

 Sarah's doing a split stay between HoJo and GVC!

Don't mind me! I'll return to the sidelines popcorn:: and sleep :cloud9:.

Pretty soon the OP will have a full page in her TR with only posts by other people planning her meals.

No, we're just reiterating her posts, if we weren't so lazy we could probably go back a couple pages and find what she plans for dinner!
