The Walt Disney World Monorail System “Highway in the Sky” is extremely popular with Guests. Read this article as to why it hasn't ever expanded.

Fascinating reading. Remarkable the WVU has had something since the 70's. The busses are fine, but I love the monorail.

I, too, love the monorail.

I am going to take my fiance' on a monorail ride when we arrive on our honeymoon.

I miss Disney so much! ::MinnieMo

Neat column, thanks for posting. I love the segment that shows Walt talking about what he wanted Epcot to really be on the Walt Disney Treasures Tomorrowland DVD. It's so fascinating to see what the original concept for WDW was, compared to what it came out to be, and to imagine what would have happened if Walt had succeeded in creating his city of tomorrow.

Is it just me or when the author started to describe the single "bubble-like" cars remind anyone of the Incredibles' movie (the transportation on Syndrome's island)?

That would be awesome if they ever developed a system like that at Disney.

Cool article! I always wanted to see the monorail expanded. I asked one of the monorail pilots about it once and he said that when a new park is proposed that there is always a budget in place for a monorail, but they just use that to slash the price when they need to.

That PRT system would be great! Walt would be proud of a system like that! :wizard: Zooming around in little bubbles.. what a great visual!

When I was working at WDW in the MK Auto Plaza, we had a great view of the Swan and Dolphin. My manager told me this neat little tid-bit.
Look at the pic and notice the large black square in the middle of the resort.
There is one in the same place at both the Swan and Dolphin.

This was here because when they were built it was planned for there to be a monorail stop there on the way to D-MGM. But, again due to financial constraints they just filled in the area with rooms.

You can also, if paying close attention, see areas all around the grounds (especially near MK, like when taking the hard right after the Auto Plaza on the way to Fort Wilderness) where the land had been prepped to lay railroad track! But they decided to use the monorail in it's place, or at least I believe that is the reason the train didn't go up.

Just a few little tid-bits for ya.

I would have to commend you on a nice photo of The WDW Swan/Dolphin.

That is a common misconception. Those black squares are just design elements not spot for the monorail. If you look at the resort from the side it is far too narrow to have a monorail platform. At best 2 cars of the monorail would be inside the hotel so you wouldn't be able to load the train. Your manager was misinformed. Sorry. ;)

We was told about the monorail through the Swan and Dolphin by a cast member driving the boat from MGM to Bordwalk too.

I worked at the Swan and Dolphin for 7 years and I can assure you this is a RUMOR! No way was the monorail ever supposed to go through either hotel! Just another urban legend! Would have been cool though!
