More free covid tests by mail

Curious how many covid tests people have had, home and administered?
We have 8 boxes of 2 tests, the ones that were mailed to us. My wife has used 1 test, so we have 15 left. That is the only test she has taken.
I have had 2 PCR tests done that were required before medical procedures, one in November 2020 and one last month.

Oh gosh, we have probably gone through 30? Maybe more?

First, I had like 4 colds and a bout of bronchitis over the last 2 years. Multiple rapid tests taken during those illnesses, as well as PCR tests to be sure negative was really negative.

My husband went through about 5 following known exposures. He used a total of 3 when he actually had covid (waiting for that negative test to exit isolation).

We have probably used about 6 or so on the kids when they had symptoms (all those were just colds as well).

I just went through 3 when I had covid. Day 1 test, day 7 test, day 9 test (finally negative). And 1 more for husband before going back to work after taking care of me for 8 days.

But, we have close contact with a very high risk individual, so we have been more proactive about testing when we have ANY symptoms.

I've had 3 PCR tests, kids have each had 2. Husband has had 2.

At home tests? I have taken 4.

I have test so many times I have lost track. It has to be at least 3 or 4 dozen times. Each time someone at work test positive, I get tested. I was tested 6 or more times in a 3 week period when I was sick (tonsilitis) back in February. I also test weekly for awhile.

I’ve only done 1 PCR, back in July 2020 when I had a bad sore throat for a few days (negative). I’ve done quite a few at home tests since then, not sure how many. But my mom was in her late 80s & I was caring for her at home with my siblings. So anytime I went on vacation or I was feeling a little sinus issue, I would test before seeing her. I also tested 3 times after attending a family wedding where several ended up + . Most of those times were precautionary & I felt fine. I also test if I find myself in unanticipated crowded situations, just in case. I know the home tests aren’t always reliable with the variants, so I have repeated a day later sometimes.

4 maybe?

I know I had one a couple days before my colonoscopy (administered by the hospital).
I took a home one a couple months ago because I had congestion that didn't want to go away.
I took a home proctored one before our cruise a couple weeks ago.
I took a home one last Friday (following the cruise) because not only did I have congestion, but a fever.

The last one was the only one that was positive.

A lot, especially in the last week and a half. 5 people in the house so far 3 of us have COVID. We have been testing regularly since the first person tested positive.
I did 2 at home tests, both negative, then PCR that was negative and took a third at home this morning it came back positive
I’d say between the 5 of us we have tested ourselves at least 15 times.

I had tests sitting in the closet for months since there was no need to test. Once someone in the house gets COVID that changes though.

We used 2 after one of the people was positive at Thanksgiving.
Then I did 2 before going to the "offical" test before cruising....just to make sure.
Did another when DH was positive, and one a week later.....

so for me 6, DH 2
We have 10 left.

We (2 of us total) went through some in late December/early January as we got sick but every test several days apart was negative. That was before the government had ones you could get. We ended up buying 1 after the reimbursement policy started (this was before the test kits from the government had been shipped out) and then got reimbursed for that.

We used 2 after we were potentially exposed to father-in-law who tested positive. We had seen him 2 days prior to his positive test. That test was negative for us.

We used 2 before we left for a weekend trip to Silver Dollar City, we used 2 about 5 days after we got back both were negative.

We'll use ones before we go to Vegas next month and test when we get back home (although monkeypox is now becoming an issue in Vegas so that's just great).

One of our test kits that came from the government had 4 in them in there rather than just 2.

We've got a total of 4 tests left (2 in one unopened box, 2 in an opened box..that one that had 4 to begin with) so we'll order more from the government pretty soon.

Why test regularly? Do you need the positive test in order to not go to work? I'm not saying this to be difficult, but what would change if you test positive? You know you've been exposed, so what would change?

I would say to possibly medicate, whether with monoclonal antibodies (did my son extremely well about 10 months ago) or some of the newer medicines available?

Do you think this came from the cruise, Sam?
It's possible. When we got off the cruise, we ubered to Disney Springs, had lunch, saw a movie, shopped a little, then ubered back to MCO. Spent a couple hours at MCO waiting for the flight, then flew home. So I can't say with any certainty. Of our travelling party of six, I've been the only one to test positive.

Most of our at-home test use was when we knew we had been exposed back in April. It took a few days after symptoms for mine to come up positive.
I used one proctored home test to meet travel requirements to return home from Spain last fall.
Haven't used any of the last batch of 8.

PCR tests have mostly been due to travel requirements or known exposure.
2 for October 2020 WDW trip (one to meet state quarantine reqs, the other a few days after we got back for peace of mind)
2 for a Dec 2020 work trip (one to meet state quarantine reqs, the other a few days after I got back for peace of mind)
1 was offered after my first vaccine, so I took it as I knew I had just been exposed
1 to get out of quarantine after being exposed in 4/2021
1 in April 2022 after a positive home test. I wanted an official record of having it in case I was one of the unlucky people who tests positive for weeks after being sick, as we were going to France in less than a month and I might need to be able to show that I was recently recovered

I don’t think you are being difficult, its a valid question. There are a few reasons. 2 of my kids have no restrictions on going to work if they’ve been exposed, only if they test positive.
Dh and my ds have to stay home for a certain number of days if exposed and come back with a negative test after that.
We were also supposed to have an out of town guest this weekend at our camp so wanted to make sure nobody else came down with it in a timeframe where they would be exposed.
Plus we are supposed to be traveling by air next week.

If it wasn’t for the guest or the traveling I wouldn’t have bothered with all the testing myself. Everyone else would have to for work.

Do you need to medicate if you don't have symptoms?
Possible. If a person feels they may have been exposed some where, but no symptoms, a person could be asymptomatic and contagious to others. If the person tested positive, then isolation for a few days to protect others. Or if a person had several (or maybe even one) comorbidity, just for peace of mind.

Yeah, lots of possibilities there. Hope you are feeling better, Sam, and the others continue to be negative.

Pretty much your plans over the next 2 weeks can change drastically if you end up positive.

When I had covid, I isolated away from my family because my kids have not yet had it and I don't want them to get it from ME of all people, and when my husband had it last year, he ended up with long covid and is in no hurry to get it again.

We didn't bother testing the kids, because they never developed symptoms, but my husband tested a couple times just so that he would know he was not putting people at risk by going out and running all the errands I usually run every week. He took over the grocery shopping and stuff and didn't want to be out doing so if he was potentially infected.

He also wanted to make sure he was still negative before going back into work. He worked from home while I was sick and didn't want to return and potentially expose his Co workers.

I guess I consider it the responsible thing to do if you need to be out in public when someone in your home is currently sick.

The latest strain has been hitting close to us.

Dh had exposure in late June. Shortly after that we both had sore throats and symptoms. We were going to visit MIL for the 4th of july and took 2 tests each to make sure we weren't covid +. We were not. Those were our only tests taken so far.

I'd like to get a few more free ones to replace those and to share with our kids.

Wanted to add that we also tested frequently because we had symptoms. My dd came home from work early not feeling well and had a fever but tested negative that night. Next morning didn’t feel better so tested again and was positive. That was after a prior at home test and a prior PCR that came back negative.
My symptoms were like my allergies so I actually thought I was in the clear with 3 negatives including a PCR until I came down with a fever and knew it was COVID.

If you are exposed and have symptoms but test negative, test yourself again, even multiple times if they linger.

To ensure that you are not exposing others while asymptomatic?

By my work policy, since I'm vaccinated I could have come in to work after a known exposure. You only need to stay home if you have symptoms or test positive. I insisted on working from home and did start having symptoms around day 3 and tested positive 5 days after exposure.
