The story on seasonal dining surcharges
We've been receiving some e-mail asking about dining surcharges during peak seasons, but we didn't want to report on them until we had a response from Walt Disney World. We've finally received that response, so here's the story.

"During certain times of the year, many of our Walt Disney World food and beverage locations experience increased Guest demand," said Disney spokewoman Zoraya Suarez. "As a result, new seasonal pricing has been implemented for select fixed-price dining locations during these periods, specifically during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, spring break, and summer vacation months. In other words, seasonal pricing is not a surcharge, it is the price of the dining experience during certain times of the year."

The dining locations effected by the seasonal price increases are:

1900 Park Fare
Akershus
Biergarten
Boma
Cape May Café
Chef Mickey’s
Cinderella’s Royal Table
Crystal Palace
Garden Grill
Hollywood and Vine
Liberty Tree Tavern (dinner only)
‘Ohana
Trails End
Tusker House

These price increases were and are in effect for:

November 18 through November 24, 2007
December 16, 2007 through January 5, 2008
March 16, 2008 through March 29, 2008
May 25, 2008 through July 5, 2008

Projecting forward, it's likely that we'll see them again for:

November 23 through November 29, 2008
December 14, 2008 through January 4, 2009

Again, the seasonal increase is "a result of high demand at select fixed-price dining locations," according to Suarez. So apparently, it's a supply-and-demand thing. Rather than keeping prices steady year-round and just dealing with people who can't get reservations, Disney has elected to see what price the market will bear and take the risk of pricing some people out in order to pull in a little extra cash from food & beverage operations.

The net effect will still have the same number of people mobbing the restaurants to keep them full, but the mix will be shifted from those with the foresight to get their reservations early enough to those either with larger budgets or the Disney Dining Plan who might take a little longer to reserve their table. So be aware, if you're planning to be at the parks during these affected times, you may need to either budget a bit more for food during your trip if you're planning to eat at one of the affected restaurants or plan to sign up for a Disney Dining Plan, which will keep your cost steady regardless of meal cost.

THIS TOTALLY BLOWS!

I am going to have to squish in all of the already hugely overpriced dining experiences into the first 3 days of our trip to avoid the freakin outrageous upcharges.....DURING VALUE SEASON! :headache:

This is soooooooo not cool.

Like the projection wasn't bad enough, the reality is even worse!

During seasons of high demand, Disney raises the prices at most of the prix fixe restaurants.

Below are the restaurants and dates when you can expect to pay more. On average, it's $4.00 more per person ages 10 and up, $2.00 more per child ages 3 -9.

May 25 - July 5, 2008
November 22 - November 29, 2008
December 16, 2008 - January 3, 2009
April 5 - April 18, 2009
May 24 - July 11, 2009
Restaurants:

1900 Park Fare
Akershus
Biergarten
Boma
Cape May Cafe
Chef Mickey's
Cinderella's Royal Table
Crystal Palace
Garden Grill
Hollywood and Vine
Liberty Tree Tavern (dinner)
Ohana
Trails End
Tusker House
NOTE: This list is subject to change without notice and does not exclude other dining venues. There is no impact on guests using the Disney Dining Plan.

THIS STILL TOTALLY BLOWS!

I guess Disney has figured out a way to keep the DDP attractive.

Hmmm, disney is really overpricing itself... DD turns 3 at the end of this year and I think we'll be doing some family resorts or cruises next year. It seems they are really taking advantage.

I don't see where this adds value to the DDP for us. For Corey and I, it would still be a stretch to have it make sense. When you add in Corey's mom, who eats like a bird, is pretty picky, and has diabetes, it really doesn't make sense. I was hoping to spread out the "bad stuff" but now we just won't be doing much "bad stuff" which is good in a way, but I don't go to WDW to behave. :rolleyes1

I can see us doing Tusker House for breakfast and that's going to be it. I was hoping to work in CRT and 1900 Park Fare. Otherwise, the only TS that I see us doing will be Kona Cafe for breakfast once and either Raglan Road or Rose & Crown. Otherwise, it's a CS and GardenGrocer.com kind of trip.

I am still ticked, because Ree, my MIL, has mobility issues and the character meals are a way for us all to get some character time without it being a whole lot of work for her. I think that seeing Ree having a conversation with the Fairy Godmother would be a hoot. I would say that we would work this into future trips, but her health is not that good and honestly, this very well could be her last big trip.

The timing just stinks. The surcharges stink. I am not amused.

Disney will do anything to suck an extra penny out of our pockets. Its becoming pathetic and low... :sad2:

Raising the prices for buffets and character meals, during certain "holiday" periods....makes the DDP a better deal. Where now, for some, the regular DDP is barely a break even deal. If they raise the price of a meal by $5 or so....it becomes more attractive.

It's just like higher prices for resorts at peak season : they know that many, many families are coming, they know that for the most part they can't come at any other time, and they know that enough of them will pay whatever Disney charges.
That's how most businesses operate. The more demand, the higher the price for the most popular items. A flight can cost you twice as much around Thanksgiving than it would a week later.

From a strictly business point of view, it makes no sense to overcrowd a restaurant with guests paying $19 when you can fill it up with guests paying $27.

Personally I think it stinks. Chef Mickey's was not really worth $18.99 to begin with and it sure as heck isn't worth $26.99. And the Poly, as much as I love it, is not worth $550 a night like Disney charges at peak season.

But as long as people keep on paying those prices it would be stupid for WDW as a business not to charge them.

I'm not sure I agree with the title of this thread. "More" implies that Disney intends to designate other periods as 'holiday' or 'peak' pricing. Instead, Mouseplanet is simply showing which not-yet-released, but expected based on previous years, days in 2008 will be designated as such.

Oops, silly me. The December/January peak period is one day longer than in 2007.

Do the menu's change during the holiday's? I know here where we go to dinner around my area the buffets step it up for holiday's so they charge more. More items than usual or special desserts.

Ugh. Luckily we won't be there any of those times except on Dec. 14, 2008, the day we leave. And luckily, the ADR we will make won't be at one of those establishments. This rots....

This does effect my favorite time to visit....late May and early June. It does stink.

12/14-12/18 is value season--why premium pricing????

Can anyone let me know where I can find the price differences ??

Thanks........

*shrug* It sucks when any prices change for anything. Disney isn't the only business or vacation destination that does this. Actually, I can't think of anywhere I have been that doesn't raise prices in peak seasons. It's a business move. Stinks. But you need to choose when you are going to go and whether you are going to pay the prices. Like a Movie Matenee or an evening show.

Starting the beginning of November I raise all the prices for my artwork, and commissioned pieces for the Holidays. The demand is there and the oppportunity to make more money.

I wonder how long it will take people to realize the food quality is not worth the price. Imo-It is really not worth what Disney is charging now before the holiday pricing went into effect. I know that we won't be paying these inflated prices. It is not that we can't, but that we won't!

We are going during October and so far that month does not have the increase, but I won't pay some of the prices now let alone if they raised them. We are eating 3 TS meals, Ohana for dinner, Tusker House for breakfast and Sci-Fi for lunch. The rest will be CS or offsite as we will have a van. Its not that we can't afford it, I just won't pay those prices its just not worth it to me..:confused3

I think it is because this is the first year that the surcharge has been applied to Spring Break, Easter, and Summer Vacation Months.

I am really hoping that there was a mistyped digit and that the dates in December start on the 19th when the holiday pricing starts rather than on the 14th when we are at the tail end of Value Season. I am also :confused3
