Hi all,

Many of you remember Monty Dog from my posts. Like this one :

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=583298

He is going to the vets today for a problem with his ears. I think it may just be ear mites but you never know. His inside of his ear is all red and black and scaly and he's scratching at it and crying a lot. I hate seeing my poor little puppy in pain. :( I need to get him one of those cone collars, Elizabethan collars, so he can't scratch. He's scratching so bad he actually is tearing off his fur and accidentaly hurting his eyes. This started late Saturday night. :(

Does anyone have any expereince with ear mites in puppies?

Thanks all, and if you can think a kind thought or say a little prayer for Monty Dog today, he (and we) would really be grateful.

It could be an infection. The vet will prescribe drops and the itchy feeling should be relieved within a day or two. If your dog has droopy ears, infections are more common.

Keeping good thoughts for Monty!! :D

Thank you. He does have ears that flop down a lot. It's only in one of them (that I can see) , but the saddest thing is he almost violently shakes his head as though he thinks shaking it will make the itchy pain go away. :( It's just terrible. And he cries. A lot. He's been through too much in his 14 months already (he had pneumonia for many weeks when he was 3 months old and it was scary).

Thanks for caring.

That does sound a lot like when my parents dogs would get ear mites. I hope the vet gets him some medicine and/or ear drops and he feels better soon!

Awh, poor baby! :(

No advice to give you I'm afraid, but I hope the vet comes up with a quick and effective treatment for Monty today. :wizard:

As it turns out - Monty dog has no ear mites!!! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

He does however have allergies. The vet gave him some cream for his torn up ears , and explained to us that when dogs get allergies, they itch and sneeze. His ears seemed to be where he was getting it the worst. He has to also take Clavamox for a side infection from the scratching. She said the infection is not too bad.

She also gave us a pill for him to take over the next few weeks.

At least he's going to be okay. The poor baby just has allergies.

Thanks for the update! Did the vet mention that sometimes the allergies can come from the food they are on? My golden retriever got an ear infection in december. We switched her food to Canidae (all natural) which was highly recommened by other golden owners. She hasn't had any problems with her ears since. It also made a huge difference in her coat as well.

I'm still keeping good thoughts for Monty!! Hopefully he'll be feeling all better soon!!

She didn't mention this. Do you know if it can start suddenly with the food? He's been eating the same food for months. But you know, he doesn't go at the food hungrily like most dogs do...I'll call her today and ask her about it.

Thanks!

Our Hunter was diagnosed with food allergies, as well! He is currently on the antibiotic cream for his ears and the vet has switched him to a new dog food. He gave me a "sample" 8 lb bag. We'll see how it goes. The new dog food, is only available thru a veterinarian and costs $40 for 18 lbs!:earseek:

Our dog Maggie had also been on the same food for months before she had the problem with her ears. My vet didn't mention a possible problem with the food, but just said that the goldens tended to have ear infections. I'm on a list for golden owners and they are the ones who said that they found many of their dogs had problems until they switched the food they were giving them. I figured it was worth a shot since the food was better for her anyway and even though it was more expensive it sure is cheaper than paying vet bills and med prices. So far Maggie hasn't had a reoccurance.

It CAN start suddenly with foods. And food allergies are the worst...it's so hard to tell what a dog is allergic to...you basically have to guess at what it might be by putting your dog on an elimination diet...which takes months.

Excessive biting, licking and scratching are all signs of food allergies...definitely ask your vet about this, because if the underlying problem isn't addressed, the allergies are just going to keep coming back when the dog is off the medication.
