Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we are a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. For most of us, the ultimate goal is to train and compete in the annual WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news and training for various other events throughout the year. We range from beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness

New WISH Team members. If you read one thing over and over, believe this. Being part of this team is fantastic. Part of the ride you get for the event is what I call the roller coaster. There will be lots of ups and downs. The more you post here, the more you will find yourself enjoying the ride. It is an incredible journey. Don't be afraid, shy or whatever to come here and just post up anything. You don't have to know us right away, or all of us at all. You will get to know some of us. It makes the event you are enjoying have MORE meaning and we love to have you.

I'm here and still chugging along in training. I'm thinking I might actually make it outside for a run on Saturday:yay: It feels like it's been forever that I've been on the treadmill!

Still here, still training, but wishing I was headed down to sunny Florida for a little dose of warm and sunny. Especially snce my sister called me yesterday from her impromptu trip. Oh well. Today it is also sunny, albeit mid-30's, and so I should head out to walk the dog.

Maura

UPDATE: Just got back from walking the dog and.....THE CROCUSES ARE BLOOMING!!! A little sign that maybe spring will begin to come soon.....

Happy March!
Still not able to run much with my TFL muscle tightening up on me everytime I try to run. I logged fewer than 20 miles last month.

In the most recent National Marathon newsletter they mentioned that our timing chip will be in our bib:
The 2010 National Marathon, Half Marathon, and Team Relay will be one of the first events in the country to premiere the brand new Chrono Track B-Tag System. With this system, your timing chip is attached directly to the bib and is is 100 percent disposable. This will quickly become the new industry standard by offering accuracy within hundredths of a second.

This will be a first for me :thumbsup2

Feels good getting in some consistant training. My next 1/2 is at the end of May so training is chugging along.

I have 1 few 1/2's planned for this year but wondering if I should do another full before goofy? Was thinking October which might be right in line with training. What do you all think?

Kim

Pat Sorry your running is off track (or TM, or road, pardon the pun!) Are you doing the usual litany of stretching/strengthening and roller-ing for your TFL? I hope it heals soon. I know that it can take a while though. I swear, I still don't know why I get some of the aches/strains that I do, and know even less about when/why they choose to go away! The bib chip seems pretty foolproof-no muss, no fuss. But will we lose precious milliseconds when it's our chest crossing the line and not our foot?. ;)

Kim I guess some questions to consider are will you have enough time to recover between a fall marathon and Goofy? will the timing of a fall marathon be in sync with your Goofy training plan? If so, and you're comfortable with it, then maybe you could do one--although maybe more in line of a "training run" rather than a race. But I'm no expert. Where's coach Charles when you need him!

Back from running and yoga. Time for lunch and tea.

Pat - We used the new chip at our local Turkey Trot last fall. It was pretty cool. Nothing else to keep track of, and they even had a bin for recycling them at the end of the race for people who don't actually keep their bibs.

Kim - I ran the Richmond full in mid-November last year. It was my target race for 2009, so all my training was geared toward that. Then I did a half in December, and other than that I just ran 10 miles each weekend between Richmond and Goofy. My group director basically said I'd done the miles, so there was no need to keep pushing. I felt relatively well-trained for Goofy, although I think I maybe should have done more than one back-to-back run. Either that, or slowed down for the Donald and conserved energy. :rolleyes1

Maura - I saw a daffodil yesterday when I looked outside to see how much snow had fallen! Fortunately, we only got a dusting, and it was almost all gone by the time I left for work. Temps are supposed to be in the 50's and 60's for the next few days. FINALLY!

I ran Monday night with my dog, which I don't usually do, so it was a challenge for both of us. Actually, she did very well. I had trouble with shin splints, again, and didn't begin to feel good until the last mile. By then I was afraid to push it too much for her sake - at the halfway point she looked like she was considering stopping, and she's WAY too heavy to carry.

Gonna try for 4-5 miles tonight, then will either do 10 or 12 on Saturday. We may go back to the Tobacco Trail and run more of the course for the half that I'm running in 2 weeks. I've been very good this week about doing core exercises (first time in over a year). If only I could stop eating... :rolleyes1

Pat- I didn't catch that news about the bib in the newsletter. I was just thinking they meant the standard D-ring that starts out attached to the bib. I wonder if I'll feel naked running a half without some kind of timing device on my shoe. Hope the running get back on schedule for you.

I went out and did just over 8 on Monday and the legs felt good but I felt lethargic. It was just one of those days but it felt good to plow through the run. I meant to do the same course today but accidentally skipped one section and didn't realize it until I finished so I ended up doing just over 7.5. The pace was much better and I felt good. It is always nice to offset a sub par run with a good one. We are looking at sun for the next few days here in northeastern Ohio so I am happy about that.

Thanks for the input. I think one of the reasons I really want to do a full before the goofy is my first and only marathon was as part of the goofy, so I felt I never really enjoyed my Mickey medal and triumph over my first marathon as I was more thrilled with the goofy.....does that make sense. However, also worried about being burned out and injured. I went into Goofy 2010 injured as did many and it was tough.

Maura I have had a couple of sessions with my chiropractor where he used ultrasound, electrical stimulation, accupuncture and then taped it with kinesio tape. Being such an isolated area, the only thing I've done is ice it after the few runs that I've done and apply heat a couple times a day daily. I tried using the stick on it but it didn't seem to help any; I've used the foam roller on my IT band, quads, hamstrings and even calf muscles in the past with success but again such an isolated area rolling didn't do anything for it. The good news is that it is gradually getting better; I just need to be patient. It was 5 weeks yesterday that I injured it.

Jackie I believe it was early 2007 that I started saving my bib numbers to "wallpaper" my garage. I've got a nice little section completed; just wish I'd started it earlier. I've tried running with my dog a couple of times; he pushes the pace early and then lags behind towards the end. I've only done 5 miles or so max with him; it is great exercise for him though.

Frank I usually look down at my shoes at some point pre-race to make sure the chip/d-tag is on there. It will probably feel wierd with nothing on my shoe. I agree getting out there and getting another run in is the best cure for a lethargic run.

I ran the Rodeo Run 10k last Saturday in Houston without any TFL pain; it did get tight after but is loose again now. I'm running 3 legs this weekend in the Texas Independence Relay so I'll see if I can keep the TFL loose between running. A major benefit of being a team captain is that I assigned myself shorter legs; my team members are all injury free. This will be my 3rd year running the relay.

Kim - I was obsessed with injury prevention before Richmond. Was almost scared to walk the dog. And I was really crazy when I volunteered at our local marathon 2 weeks before and it poured down rain all day and I ended up cold and soaked. But I make it through Richmond uninjured, and then basically coasted until January. I had thought I might try to do a 16 mile run during December, but after I ran a half in sleet mid-month, decided that was enough. I really, really, wanted to start Goofy healthy, and managed to do so.

Pat - Sienna is short (actually, DD and her BF call her "Stumpy"), so the vet recommended that we keep her runs to no more than 3 miles. DH has a boxer mix that the vet says could easily do 6-8, but I can't control him. Sienna wants to go out fast, but I make her take walk breaks so she doesn't give out too easily. We can only run in the cool months, since she doesn't do well in hot weather and after a mile or so tends to just lie down in the grass and refuse to get up. 45 pounds is too much to carry.

I went out last night and did 6 miles - 2 mile run/walk warmup to get past the shin splints, then ran 3.5 nonstop. First time I've run more than 2 miles without a walk break, so I'm feeling very proud of myself today! Walked a little during the cooldown, since otherwise I was feeling really good and wanted to keep running. Was afraid I might injure something if I went too far, so I called it quits.

This was a pretty good week for me, basically.

Monday was a fairly moderate 5 miles running, Tuesday was 12 miles. Thursday was 2+ hours on the crossramp (elliptical) non-stop. Every day of the week had some amount of strength training. Friday was the only "bum" day of the week. Would have been a great day to get outside for a good long run, but woke up feeling horrible, and it just wasn't happening.

Hoping next week will total close to the 50 mile mark.

Still haven't picked my spring marathon...

I was wondering if I can join in. I have just started walking and going to the gym to get back in shape. I am hopeing for the princess 1/2 next year, but we shall see how it goes!!!

Lelelubsdis- Of course you can join in. The more the merrier.

I was able to get out and run in shorts today. Man it feels so much better. Nothing long, just a 5 miler for me. Other then my last long run on Wednesday all my runs will be under 10K until the National half on the 20th.

Thanks Fire dancer!!!

I am by no means up to running distance, but I am working on the eliptical. I am currently doing an hour at 6 stride and 2.5-3 mph. So far I'm going about a mile- 1 1/2, but I feel like I get a much better workout on the elipitcal than the treadmill as my stamina build faster, and it's easier on my knees. Thankfully it's starting to get warmer and I can hopfully get out and walking. I do much better outside than in with distance and speed.

leleluvsdis:welcome: Slow and steady is defintely a winning way to get back into things, and I'm sure you can do Princess next year. If you decide you would like the "company of a smaller group", then pop over to the Team thread and check it out, and you can request to be assigned to a team.

Frank I was actually TOO WARM running yesterday! With the sun out, I could have worn shorts. The sun is really beginning to feel warme, and that is really nice.

Tim So are you training for a marathon, but havent decided which one? Wow, that requires a discipline that I am pretty sure I don't have. Hope you find one you like soon.

Well, I got over my disappointment of not being at WDW this weekend to cheer people on and bask in warm sun (mostly). Did a 9 miler yesterday that was pretty good, except for the occasional ice patches that had me dancing. It's supposed to be low 50's for the next few days--so that will be nice, and the dog and I will walk to get an ice cream.

Have a good week, everyone.

Maura

Leleluvsdis - Welcome!

Frank - Isn't taper wonderful?

Maura - DH wore shorts Saturday morning, but I stuck to tights. By yesterday, we could have worn shorts. Today, it's supposed to be mid 60's. I'm delirious! :dance3:

On the flip side of delirious, I seem to have gotten the shin splints under control, but I have a nagging feeling that there may be a stress fracture looming. There's a pain in the bone that persists day and night. It didn't seem quite so bad while I was doing my 10 mile run on Saturday, but when I'm not running, it's really obvious. I keep hoping that maybe when I fell last week I hit more than just my knee, and maybe that's all it is. I'm operating under the "if I ignore it, it will go away" philosophy right now. But I'm leaning toward taking it easy this week and maybe not running, in hopes of making it to my half on the 21st.

What's the team thread and how do I get there?
Thanks!
