Month of January 2010 - WISH Team Walkers and Runners Training Thread

I wonder what time the D23 events start because I may have to consider this. I've got to start researching on flights, etc.

Anyways, last night I was at the gym and got 65 minutes on the eliptical and some stretching time in. I'm going to head back there today. DBF joined his own gym so I don't have as much pressure to head home immediately after work. I really enjoy the opportunity to get my exercise time in. I can't wait for this weeks weight watchers meeting to see how the extra exercises is helping me.

Random thoughts during Week 2 of marathon recovery....

Who's going to start the Team Discussion? (Or do we just keep on keepin' on )
And do we really need to keep track of miles/time anymore? Did it ever amount to anything?
And what exactly is a BOT? (They seem to have a healthy thread, but I can't figure out what it's about!)

Still working on the goals for the year. I'm thinking I might focus on half marathons and see how much improvement I can get in my time. Up to now, it's been a "I'll takee on of those and one of those..." approach--a half, a full, a tri, etc. Seems like it's time to see what this old body can do if properly focused and trained. Yeah, sounds kind of anal, but I really need a goal to work for!

Hope the rest of the recent WDW racers are back in the swing of things.

Hi all! I recognize many of you from the Goofy training thread.

I am back from Orlando as of 1/13--you know, the day it started to warm up in FL! Anyway, a bit sluggish since then. I did one workout in the WL gym, and one strength training workout here at home. Other than that, nothing. I thought I'd get out for a walk to day, but since I am feeling a bit depleted I figured I'd skip it in favor of some more rest. :thumbsup2

So, what's in store for me this year? I am secretly (as in don't tell DH!) working to see how many states I can do (marathons). So far I have Ohio (Flying Pig) and Florida (Mickey). My goal is to do another full in the May-July time frame in a border (Ohio) state, and another full in North Carolina in November (Raleigh, maybe OBX). I'd love to do one in March, but we are going to Rome for a week and I don't think I can fit in another trip much before May.

I will also likley be doing the Breast Cancer 3 Day again this year. 60 mile walk over the course of 3 days. It was a great experience last year. Check out www.the3day.org to see if it might be for you. So far I am signed up to do the walk in DC again in October, but I may change that as it gets closer.

I'll likely do some 5 and 10K's locally just for fun. A friend of mine (state senator) walks from Cincinnati to Columbus each year--about 100 miles, and I will likely walk with him for the bulk of that walk.

Maura,

Hi! Great goals for the year (I'm focusing on 1/2s this year, too, although I have waaaayyyy more to improve than you. ;))

About the teams. Sigh. Yeah, somebody should start a discussion about what will be the status of the teams next year. I suppose it should be me, huh? That's the problem with no organizational structure. :rotfl2: Anyway, there's pros and cons to keeping the teams--and in what form. I love my 'Ohana family, but found the teams kept me from being social in other areas (could have been the captaining, the roster keeping, and starting a new career track, though.)

So, I'll post a discussion thread for the teams and I hope everyone here will chime in.

As for the BOT thread--it's a cute story, a bit long to recount here. Essentially, they're a group of WISHers who found themselves doing a common race, became friends virtually and in real life, started doing other races together, and touch base on the thread. The Bots, however, are incredibly friendly and open to new joiners. If I remember correctly, they're planning on the Marine Corps Marathon as one of their major races this year. There will be a large WISH contingency there, then (though I don't know if they fly the lime-green color at all races), for those interested. :goodvibes

Oh, and to Christine! Great plan for the states/marathons. It sounds like you're addicted! :thumbsup2

I came into this thread seeking some additional ways to jump-start my motivation, which for the first time in 40 months had waned significantly recently. Fortunately, it is the interaction with Ohana teammates that is getting me back on track, while I also want to get back out to other threads.

I'll look for the other thread on the teams, because I think they fill a much need position in WISH to help organize without overriding the whole of the WISH group.

As for my running, today I did an easy 2 miles for my first running since Goofy. Everything felt good and I wanted to run farther, but I decided to just stay within myself for the rest of this week and consider later how to advance after that. Later this week, I'll throw in some swimming and bike riding with more running and cross-train my way through recovery.

We went out and did our first long run after the Goofy today.
My Dh towed my Dh and Sd totaling 100lbs!!!!!!

We took it slow and did 34 miles in 3 hours.

Went out and did just under 7.5 today. I am comparing this month with last January and my mileage is up and times are down. I'm glad that even though we have been a bit snowy up here this winter there have been a lot of decent running days and I have only had to resort to the torture rack (aka treadmill) once.

I hope all of you WDW full, half, and both runners are starting to feel like the legs are getting back to normal. It has been a slow moving thread with the tapering, then marathon, and now recovery.

Higher miles, longer time, your building your stamina levels. Great work.

My trip report is started! See the link in my signature. It is also on my Disney blog.

Maura - It seems there are a lot of us focusing on the half distance this year. I haven't decided if I'm going to tackle another full or not. I have a time goal for the full this year, but it may get pushed to the back burner. I don't like the distance, and I particularly don't like training for it.

Christine - If I DO a full, it will probably be OBX. It will not be City of Oaks in Raleigh. I will, however, be there in one way or another, either for the half or as a volunteer. You have a really full schedule this year. I'm impressed!

Frank - Glad you're having a good month. What's your next event? You're doing Indy, right?

Slow start after Goofy. I did my first run Tuesday night. 4 miles at the track, and I guess I can call it speedwork. I'm officially bagging tonight's run, due to a combination of laziness and still trying to recover from the cold that I brought back from WDW. Will run with my group on Saturday. I have a half marathon in 3 weeks that I hope to PR, so I really need to get my act together. I'm counting on that Goofy fitness to carry me through.

Jackie

Too funny! I hate the treadmill too! I'd rather brave the cold and even rain/snow to avoid it![/quote]

Yes, my hate of the treadmill is well documented. The only thing that keeps me off the road is ice or dangerous conditions.

Frank - Glad you're having a good month. What's your next event? You're doing Indy, right?

I sure am. My next event is actually the National Half Marathon in DC in March. My friend Troy (who ran Nashville with me) has a brother in the secret service and he was transfered from the UN in NYC to the presidential detail in DC. We aren't shy about exploiting anyone we know for a place to stay when we travel to run.

Today was my mom's birthday so after we took her out for dinner and cake I decided to do a bit of a bloated run. I'm pretty sure I now know what it feels like to run pregnant. It was not pretty but it was another nice day and this time of year you just have to take advantage of them when you can.

Isn't that what friends and family are for????:rotfl:

As for me, I did a nice 3 mile run today and the legs were feeling pretty good, until I twisted my knee later in the day. :( Hopefully, it won't impact my weekend run.

Jackie Hope your cold goes away and your trining improves. And I wish I could make up my mind--half/full, half/full--I'm still thinking about my plans. If I don't figure it out soon, the year will be over!

Frank Hope you can get out to run this weekend--around here it is supposed to hit 47 on Sunday and probably the same your way.

Richard Hope the knee thing is temporary and your weekend run is good.

Well my legs are definitely NOT back yet. Went for a 3 miler yeseterday--first easy run after marathon--which turned into 2.5. I just can't seem to shake some nagging strains in my right leg.

So I may just not run for a while to let things really settle down. Not planning any near term races anyway, and I'd rather feel like I'm starting from scratch healthy than running with discomfort.

So off to the pool, bike, yoga, weights, etc to keep busy.

Hi everyone! Starting running again this week - I've registered for a 30K race at the end of March. Ran once outdoors and a really short run on the TM (since I was at the gym anyway). Thought I was going at a good pace until I looked at my time when I got home. Oh well! :rotfl: At least I'm getting in the miles right? Have a 10 miler planned for this weekend which I'll probably do tomorrow since Sunday is suppose to be rainy.

Richard - Ouch! pixiedust: for your knee! Hope things feel better today.

Maura - Have you gone to a doctor or PT to make sure it's not a serious strain.

Frank - Does that mean your brother is like a body guard to the president? One of the guys in suits with the sunglasses and earpieces?

Jackie - pixiedust: for your cold! Which half are you running in?

Kirstie - That is quite the workout!

Hi everyone! I registered for my first race of 2010 - the inaugural Unite Half Marathon on the Rutgers campus in New Brunswick NJ on April 18th! It looks like a great race, and I know there will be a few WiSHers there too - Laurie, Karen, John, Noah & Jen - so I'm really looking forward to it.

One of these days I hope to write up a race report for my Disney Marathon experience! If I don't ever get to it, let me sum it up in one word - awesome! My first, but definitely not my last marathon. I'm still thinking about my plans for the year. As others have said, I may concentrate on increasing my speed in half marathons (or at least, getting back to my pace from 1 1/2 years ago, before I hit a few health challenges last year). However, I am also strongly considering running the Philly marathon in November. Decisions, decisions. . .

Unfortunately, I have been very distracted since returning from Florida, because my 11-year old daughter has been having very severe upper abdominal distress. So far no diagnosis, which has been quite frustrating. She is generally such a happy, healthy girl, and it is so sad to see her in such pain. We're in the middle of testing for a bunch of things, and also I'm trying a bunch of "complementary medicine" approaches (accupuncture, homeopathy & therapeutic massage so far), just trying to give her some relief. I'll keep you all posted.

And I'm off to Florida again tonight with my son! We are going to Crystal River to get our open water scuba certification! That will be lots of very good "cross-training" exercise, and once that is done I hope to be back to running regularly next week.

It was so great seeing many of you at Marathon weekend, and I can't wait to do it all over again!

Frank - Does that mean your brother is like a body guard to the president? One of the guys in suits with the sunglasses and earpieces?

It isn't my brother, it is my friend Troy's brother. The people you see on the TV are one of the presidential details. His detail has different responsibilities. They do most of the route planning when the president travels. In the case of an attack on the president the personal detail (the ones with the president) are in charge of protection and removal. His detail is in charge of counter attack and apprehension or elimination of the perpetrator(s).

Whoops sorry about that Frank! I must say that it sounds like an interesting line of work!

Official times have been posted for the 5K we ran last weekend. 34:33.4 New PR for me, but still got beat by a dog...about three of them, actually!
My husband & I were #241 & 242 out of 278 runners. This was more of a race for serious runners than the Jingle Bell Run for Arthritis in December, which was our first 5K ever. We finished that one together at 35:07. The one we did on Sunday was here in our hometown and the course was tough, in my opinion! It was a bit hilly and hard on the knees. It is a three month series so we will be doing it again February 21, and March 14. I was #10 out of 15 my age group, Female 40 to 44, but my husband was 26 out of 26 for his! He stuck by me the whole way but I am encouraging him to run his own race next month so he can see where he really places. He is so much faster than me! I'm actually looking forward to pushing myself on my own as well. He keeps reminding me that we are training together because we are going to run the WDW Half together - our goal is to finish and enjoy the experience together. This Frozen Foot 5K series has such a serious feel to it that I think we were both intimidated a bit! Anyone else get into a race where they felt like this?
