Month of January 2010 - WISH Team Walkers and Runners Training Thread

Welcome Emily!!

Sounds like you're building up a great base. You'll definitely be ready for Donald in 2011. :thumbsup2 Are you using a particular training program?

Thanks! :)

I completed C25K about two weeks ago. I don't have a current training program. I just run four miles every other day. And, I've started adding some strength training within the past few weeks.

Just got home from the factory and i'm need a LOT of custom things done.:sad2:

The problem is that these faster chairs are designed for men and they are having to work out have things can be changed to fit / work for me.

They are pushing making my frame up by a week, and then they want me to go back down for another fitting, and too see what else needs changing.

I'm not looking forward to getting my final bill.:scared1:

Hello everyone! I'm new to the WISH part of these boards but have always lurked at the DIS boards since planning my first trip to WDW in 2003.
I've only been running for a few months. I joined the gym when the kids went back to school in September then realized that if I could run on the treadmill, I could probably run outside. I followed a program that I found on the Dunkin Donuts website (true story!) which started with walking and slowly adding more running leading to a 5K at the end of the 8-week program. My husband and I ran our first 5K at the Jingle Bell Run for Arthritis in December. We finished at 35:07, although my husband could have had a much better time than me! We have had the plan in mind about running the half marathon and did the 5K to be sure that we liked doing an organized run. We have followed blogs and stories for months of folks who ran the half this year and are so inspired to do it ourselves! We registered for the 2011 Walt Disney World Half Marathon the first day registration opened, Monday after Marathon weekend. Our next 5K is this Sunday here in Elizabethtown, PA. It is the first in a series of 3 called the Frozen Foot 5K and runs Jan, Feb & March. We run about 10 miles a week on our own and have been increasing our pace so I am hoping to report a new PR 5K time on Monday! I am excited about being a part of the WISH Team and look forward to getting to know you all better!:wave2:

:welcome: and congratulations on your first 5K, which was done at a :thumbsup2 pace.

You will have a fun time training for the 1/2 marathon here on WISH, and who knows you might decide to do a WDW race before 2011!!!!!;)

Actually, thinking about the Inaugural Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Relay and dividing up the 13.1 miles between my husband and myself! Wouldn't that be a great introduction to WDW races!?! Our kids are 15 & 11 so we have to consider them but I'd love to do this one as a trip sans children! I love Epcot International Food & Wine Festival ...got some scheming to do for this one!~

So excited to start this new journey in my life! Thanks for the welcome here!

willkommen luckymum22. Congratulations on your first 5K. You can do a half. It might seem like long distance, and it is, but as long as you are determined to do it you will.

syko, it sounds like the chair is coming along. Who's building it, NASA? It sounds like a pain to have all the alterations done but look at the bright side, if you weren't so fast you wouldn't need the custom chair.

The thread has been understandably slow with all you runners down in FL and will probably be slow for a while with everyone recovering. I'm been getting my winter runs in because I am kind of weird and like running in the winter outdoors. We are having a little warm spell going on now so I took advantage and got in a run after work tomorrow. It is amazing how warm 38 or 40 feels when you are used to wind chill in the high single digits and teens.

My chairs being made by TopEnd.
Its annoying that the handles are too wide my hands and I can't reach the break, I can't see in the mirror so they are having to design a new handle for me.
As for the other things they are saying they might have to start bending the frame.:scared1:
It just gets me  that I have to pay for things to be made smaller as they don't list it as an option. They even agreed with me that the chair is designed for men!!!!!

I know I need it to fit, its just I only have a set amount of $$$ and that was to get new federation wheels, but that money will have to go to the adaptions.

They keep telling me how much faster I will be and they will make the new chair work.......I wounder if I could get them to give me a money back garuntee.:lmao:

It's started to warm up in FL.
I went out yesterday with my cold gear on and worked up a sweat, but that might have something to do with the fact that I did 5 miles, at race pace.

I'm trying to do some "active recovery" this week. My legs are still reminding me they ran a marathon on Sunday! It's going to sound pretty stupid, but I didn't expect them to hurt that much the first couple of days. Why was it so different than doing my 20 miler--which I did faster!

So swimming, yoga and upper body weights--nothing too strenuous, just enough to keep things moving forwards toward.....what? I really better figure out my next training goals soon!

Our weather dude said today is the first day of 2010 that we'll see temps over 70. I don't ever want to be cold again :thumbsup2 Y'all remind me I said that when we're training in the summer heat/humidity.

I've managed to get 3 workouts in a row done! Woohoo!

Here's my dilemma: I am booked at BLT for Princess weekend, but I haven't registered for the race or booked my flight because there is a chance that I will have a trip there the week before and can't justify (to anyone but myself and you guys) two trips to WDW in 2 weeks.

My other option if I don't do the Princess half is to head to VA Beach for the Shamrock Half at the end of March. I have a friend that lives there that I really want to see again. I haven't seen him in years and thought a trip to the race would give me a good chance to catch up.

I feel that I've got plenty of time to prepare for either race so I just need to make up my mind ASAP and get myself registered.

Aside from that, I spoke with my TNT coordinator and I will hopefully be mentoring for the fall season since I plan on do the PDR (rock & roll - whatever) and then fundraising with them again for Disney when I will be doing the full!

I would love to do one long trip, but DBF has a conference in Tampa from Feb 22-24. Flights, rental car, etc are cheaper if we go from 21-27. I have enough vacation time to take two weeks off, but I don't have enough points or extra money to take a trip that long. If he didn't have the conference than I would try to do both races. As it stands, I may try to do the ESPN 5k. DBF had the nerve to suggest that we go somewhere else during the the extra days of the trip.

Lol! After hearing about the d23 events for princess weekend I'm wondering how I can make both races happen.

I don't know the details since I've only been seeing bits and pieces on facebook and twitter today and I haven't been able to check on Disney's website, but I believe there is a D23 event on March 5 both in WDW and DLR. I'll come back later with details.

how quickly does the marathon sign up list fill up? I was hoping to wait and register in February for the 1/2 January 2011.

The Goofy fills up first, in afew weeks, then the half and finally the full.

I think you will be fine leaving the 1/2 until feb.
