Month of January 2010 - WISH Team Walkers and Runners Training Thread

Okay, I keep putting things off on coming back here until I can do a "proper" (Debra-length) post. :rotfl2:

That ain't happening for a while, so I'm just jumping in.

Frank: Your March/DC half marathon...wow! It's a beautiful time of year there. I'll also exploit anyone for my own nefarious purposes. For races only, of course. :rolleyes1

Maura:
So I may just not run for a while to let things really settle down. Not planning any near term races anyway, and I'd rather feel like I'm starting from scratch healthy than running with discomfort.
Smart strategy, as usual. There's always plenty of XT activities to keep us stronger and make us better runners (and walkers) once we're recovered.

Vicky: Congrats on signing up for your 30K. And I say a good pace in training is sometimes the one that just, dang it, feels good!

Kira: So glad you had a great marathon--you deserve it. to DD. I hope she's better soon. So jealous of you and DS and scuba certification.

To everyone I missed: Catch you on the next post!

As for me: Congrats to everyone who's getting back in the running groove from marathon weekend. The best thing about the Goofy for me was that I realized I'd built up some core strength from my last Disney marathon. No back injuries or niggling pain. (I knew that, but it was good to confirm it.)

I've been out for three short runs, with the feet causing mild discomfort. Shoddy pace, though. And it's half marathons for me this year, as I'd really like to focus on that distance. Plus, a new commitment to much more outdoor time than treadmill time. Pittsburgh hills make me stronger, if not faster, and I regret wimping out on the outdoor LRs in November/December because of weather.

And more weight training. I think I hit a new record for the past 6 months--3x this week! (Yeah, I'm an overachiever. :lmao:)

So, I spoke with my mom when I saw that the princess was at 93%. I told her I was having a dilemma since I wanted to do that race, but DBF wants me to go to a conference in Tampa from February 22-24 (he may extend for me to be in WDW though).

She asked when was the last time I took a vacation with him... Ummm... to the Grand Canyon... in June... Now he had every opportunity to travel to WDW in August or for marathon weekend, but he chose not too. And I REALLY want to do the Princess half again. She told me to go to the conference with him. Ugh! (yes, there were a lot of exasperated signs when we had this conversation).

So I've now told DBF that I want to go to the conference. If we are not book before the weekend is over and there are still places available for the Princess, I will be taking that trip on my own!

the torture rack (aka treadmill)

:rotfl2::rotfl2:Too funny! I hate the treadmill too! I'd rather brave the cold and even rain/snow to avoid it!

Let's start a 'who hates the treadmill' club!! Ok all you experts out there--is it my imagination or does the 'torture track' (love that!) train you to have a shorter stride? Even though I have a long belt/ track, I feel like I can never just run a normal stride or even go a fast as I do outside. What's that about? And can you really train for a race on the stupid thing?

The treadmill is a necessary evil, only because I don't often get to run until DD6 is in bed. I'm slower on the TM at home, but faster on the TM at the Y. Ours is a cheap Proform from Sears, theirs has cable TV so must be better :thumbsup2 I guess, to answer your question...who the heck knows? But...we do have WISHErs who train for the marathon on the miserable things. Some of our northerners post results from their 20 milers on the TM in December...that's HARDCORE!

One thing that interests me...DD17 bought a Nook from Barnes and Noble (one of the ebook readers). I think it would be cool to try on the TM. You can increase the font size and it would sure make 'turning' pages easier.

Shirt orders are usually some time in the summer so we're still good for 2010, but doesn't help you for the Princess.

Count me in. I only resort to it when necessary. I am not sure if it shortens my stride because I am terrible about keeping my stride long even outdoors. I didn't realize it until I saw the video of my finish at Nashville and it was bad. When I concentrate on my stride I am at least 10 seconds a mile faster so that will be my think to work on in the spring. Unfortunately winter running often means keeping your stride a bit shorter because of the conditions.

I have gotten to the point where I am only about 10 seconds a mile slower on the treadmill but it feels like I am sprinting. I get much hotter and the miles seem to barely tick by. I know a lot of it is mental and if my gym had a fan in the room I use to run it would feel so much better. It is a room with a large movie screen and a DVD that plays so there is a nice distraction and the lights are off so it is cooler because of it but the fan would be nice.

Deb- One of my friends will be working in Germany for two years so a couple of us are already planning a trip out there most likely in Sept 2011. There will be at least a half included in that trip. I want to do a couple of halfs or fulls in Europe with my ultimate goal being to do both the Paris and Rome marathons eventually.

Good morning. I finally climbed back on my treadmill on Thursday after taking a break after going Goofy. It felt okay. I took it slow.... I have put together a core/strength routine which takes about 50 minutes. I have done that 3 times this week. Hopefully I will get back with my trainer next week as I still have 12 sessions left. I was hoping I could put some goals together before meeting with him again...

I don't think I will be joining that club since I am pretty much a treadmill trainer!! Just love the convenience of it... I usually do my during the week training on that, then get out over the weekend.

I did my first spin class ever. I think that hour was harder than the half! I'm going to get cleaned up and run some errands and hopefully not totally crash by three like some of the people in the class said. Hey I stayed up til 10-ish (leaving Epcot as Illuminations was starting) after getting up at 2:15 for the race, so I should be able to push through today.

Today, I LOVE my treadmill. It's 35 degrees, raining and there is slick ice all over the sidewalk, so I'm going to run on the treadmill and just be glad I'm not outside. Most days I'd be in your club, though. My TM always feels slower than real life.

For what it's worth, I did nearly all of the last months of the January Half Marathon training this year on my TM and got a fabulous personal record to show for my efforts. :) It's not the most fun way to run, but it can prepare you for a race when outside conditions are dangerous.

Well you have a good point there for certain. I almost wiped out today on some frozen mud. And, there are plenty of days when I just can't get out at all and the TM comes in REALLY handy after the 2 little guys go to bed. It was super boring, but my DH mounted a small flat -screen TV on the wall right above it! So now when I know I'm going to use the TM, I try to time it with a good movie or TV show!

Even on days like that I can't say I love the treadmill. I pretty much grit my teeth and bare it. To each their own though.

The mercury jumped up into the 40's here today which means I got to get out and actually run in shorts. Woo hoo. Sometimes it is the little things in life.:goodvibes

Hi again everyone- still kinda new around here but am training and hoping to do Country Music Half-Marathon the end of April- just gotta convince a few of the peeps to do it too! I'm training like I"m doing it though! My only other half on the horizon for me is the Ft Wayne (Indiana) half that's in Sept. I can't do WDW in 2011 because of conflicts with the Panama Canal Repo cruise we're taking. I'm not sure I'll miss WDW- it's gotten way crowded and expensive the last few years! Last week I ran 2 miles a day (Mon-Fri) next week I plan to add a mile on Mon, Wed, and Fri, but only going 2 on my lifting days. I'm trying to loose weight and train at the same time!

DD17 and I are doing CMM. She's applying to Vanderbilt so this will be part of our College Tour Extravaganza!

That is so great a reason to be doing that together! My oldest worked really hard to to get me to do CCM last year and this year, but it falls close to my anniversary, and this year is the same weekend as the Lone Star 70.3. If she goes to Vandy, you'll have the perfect reason to repeat this race, plus this year you can get the extra Rock n Roll medals if you do more RnR races. (less than subtle hint :rolleyes1 ).

On the subject of actual running, today I did my first long post-Goofy run and did 7.1 miles with friends at a faster pace than we really hoped to run. We had lots of stories to share about our marathons in Phoenix, Houston and Orlando this month, plus bagels after, always love a good bagel.;)

Hi everyone! Did my first LR of 10 miles since the half and it felt pretty good. I messed up a little with my Garmin though. I usually have it set for intervals of 1 mile, rest and running. I use that setting for shorter runs so I see my splits. I went out on Saturday and changed the running interval to 15 minutes but left the rest interval on miles. I think I walked for about 2 minutes before I wondered what was going on. Pacing was about 10:40 m/m for the run so I'm happy about that. Did 5 miles this morning in half marathon-like weather. It was cold and rainy but managed about the same pace as Saturday. Best of all, no achy knees (knock on wood), just achy feet.

bounceliketigger - I don't hate the TM but it is really boring. I try not to run anything longer than 5 miles on it but that may soon change. I did a lot of my training for the Minnie 15K on it.

Debra - I gotta work on the hill training. I'm not very good about forcing myself to run at pace up hills.

Mel - Sounds like a fun trip!

luckymum22 - Congrats on your PR!

Richard - I love post LR bagels too!

Have a great day everyone! :wave2:

Richard - I ran 7 miles yesterday with my friends. Gave them all the gory details of Disney, while planning our future races for this spring. Felt like we were back in Orlando - although our water bottles weren't quite freezing, the greenway bridges were all icy. And the guys setting the pace for the first 3 or 4 miles were from a much faster group, so we were really moving until we split from them and decided to take it easy!

Mel
- DD19 is doing her first half with us in May. Will be interesting to see how that goes. That's a great way to do the college tour, though. We did a waterfall tour...

Bookwood
- Welcome! I agree that WDW is getting way too expensive. DD has said if she likes Indy that she may want to do the Disney half, but I'm kinda hoping she doesn't. I'd like to take a year off. I was really unhappy with their execution this year and would like to keep some of my money!

After the 7 miles yesterday, which turned out to be much faster and hillier than I'd originally planned, I felt a lot better today than I expected to. DH and I took the dogs out this afternoon for a 2 mile hike in the woods and I actually had to shed a layer and ended up sweating. It was a really nice feeling! (Remind me of that around June...)

Jackie

This Frozen Foot 5K series has such a serious feel to it that I think we were both intimidated a bit! Anyone else get into a race where they felt like this?

Yes, but I was too newb to know it. A 5k/10k/half race I entered because it was on my six mile weekend last fall. Nearly DLF, but gave me more stand around and wait experience.

I finally got outside again this weekend - four miles Saturday morning. I started back up on the TM Thursday after the half. I'm planning on the St Louis half, April 11. I'd like to do one or two in the fall and work my way up to the WDW marathon in 2012. We'll see.

Ronda

Hi everyone!

After reading the thread on teams, I decided to venture back to the original thread.

10 mile "long run" today. 1:34 ish. Doesn't feel long after all the longer marathon training.

Frank, I'm doing the full at National in DC. Any chance you want to help pace me for a 3:40 BQ?

Chimera, Everyone I've talked to whose done CMM says its awesome. I wanted to do it but its the weekend of my girls' track teams sectional meet. I'm doing RnR Mardi Gras instead and may try RnR Chicago depending on how I like it.

Best,
Jennifer
