Month of August - WISH Team Walkers and Runners

Hi folks...been MIA for a few days, been busy. Meghan, sending totally positive thoughts to you and your Grandma. Been there.

Here's a collective :grouphug: for those of you nursing the injuries.

Welcome to the new folks!!

I have been training though! Satuday was my long day at 9 miles. Funny story - I headed out, felt good, and at 1 mile, the MP3 play just DIED...ugh. Well, I figured that was a good test for race day in case I decide not to use it. I'm keeping an eye on my pace and feeling really good. About 2 mile from the end, I think I'm WAY off pace, how could that be?? So I speed up and really crank it out for the last two miles. I check the Garmin when I stop, and :confused3 I was way AHEAD of the pace...how could that be? Here's my (addeled) math: 9 miles at 15 minute miles = 2 hours, 15 minutes. If I want to be under a 14 minute mile, I subtract 14 minutes, right :teacher:?

:rolleyes1 Okay, so I am not allowed to do math while exercising :rotfl: ...Anyway, I ended up at a 13:30 pace walking, and BOY DID I FEEL IT!! Yikes. Sunday felt more like a rehab day than just a rest day. And CT on Monday was tough, but yesterday's 3 miler went well, though I did slow it down a bit to give myself a break, :rotfl2:

Sorry not much internet time today..to catch up just watned to say hi?

I just got fitted for new shoes today, went for a run in them a bit ago and oh my, what a HUGE difference they made! I had a fantastic run today - felt like I could go for longer, but of course didn't because I want to stick to my schedule.

mla1977, I hope your grandmother is doing better :(

Welcome, Alicia! What kind shoes did you get?

Welcome, Alicia! What kind shoes did you get?

I bought Asics GT 2140. They offer a good amount of support for my arches which are high, but I overpronate badly so I need the added support. I like them so far!

Hi Team!

I've promised myself that as I gear up to start my official Goofy training that I would be more faithful about posting on the training threads.....so.....I just got home from my weekly aqua-fit class, and as usual, the instructor worked us hard. I've been taking the class since the beginning of the year and really like it. I'd never done any cross-training prior to this class and I am hoping that it will help with Goofy.

Hey WISHers-

I haven't posted on the main board in forever (or read anything, so forgive me for doing an "all about me" post)!

I was thinking about going to Disney for Labor Day because my 9 year old gets an extra day off for the weekend (budget cut- forced teacher holiday on Tuesday!). Our passes expire in October, so I'm saving money right??

I was just playing around and saw there is a triathlon that weekend. It's the trek women series. I've never done a tri...

Positives: it's a short one (1/2 mile swim, 12 mile bike, 5k run). I know I can handle the running part and it's at Fort Wilderness, which my DH loves. I could book a cabin there and get to the race easily. It's in the morning, so it wouldn't interfere with parks. I can also bring my daughter's new bike. It's a big fancy bike- the frame is a little too small for me, but I could handle it.

Negatives: haven't swum in forever, haven't been on a bike much, no proper clothing. Way out of my comfort zone.

I have 30 days. Is it completely insane to consider?! (I may go swim tomorrow anyway just for variety, which will give me an idea...)

Thoughts?

Hi Jen! Happy to see you again! :yay: I say go for it. At the very least, wouldn't it be fun to do? Yes, you know it would be. Do it!

Lynnda is doing this one. It is a very friendly tri and a nice course from what I have been told. I will try to get her on here to reply as well.

I would see how you feel after swimming one or two times to get ready. If you have the fitness for the run portion (which you do), you should be able to handle the bike also. You will need to establish a comfort level in the water.

Hey Jen! As Bill said, I'm doing this one. It's a brand new series, but it is put on by all the old Danskin personnel - Sally Edwards is the spokesperson, and Maggie Sullivan is the series director. With them, it will definitely be an awesome race!!! They really celebrate women, and make you feel so empowered. They especially celebrate cancer survivors that are doing the race - so amazing to see these strong women!!! The best part (for me) is that Sally is the designated last-place finisher. ;) There are no time limits, and they completely support you throughout the race. My concern if you haven't done one would be getting ready for the swim. Open water is very different from the pool, but they have plenty of kayaks and lifeguards out there, as well as swim angels - people on noodles that will encourage you and let you rest for a bit.

I did this exact course at the Danskin in May. The swim is on the Ft Wilderness beach - water is warm and murky, but I like the fact that I can't see any "critters" that might be below me... The bike course is nice, but there are several overpasses. Being from the flat part of FL, I was NOT prepared for those! :scared1: And the run is absolutely beautiful - through Ft Wilderness, but not always in the shaded areas. It was extremely HOT in May, though, so take fluids with you on the run.

All that to say - I definitely think you can do it! And I would love to have another WISHer there! :goodvibes Let me know if you have any questions. We stayed in a cabin in May and it was great! Bill did drive me to the race start because our cabin was over a mile away, and it was really dark in the wee hours on the morning. This time we are at Wilderness Lodge (and I'm taking a big flashlight), so I'll see how that goes. YAY!!! I'm so excited about this race!!! I really hope you decide to do it, too!!! :cool1:

Hello WISHers. I have been out of the office setting up a new branch and have been putting in 10 hour days so I have been kind of MIA. I wanted to say this week was my week to scale back my long run a bit so I did just over 10 and felt great. After my hot run on Monday I waited until dark and boy did it feel great. Managed to stay under the pace I need to break that 90 minute half I have been shooting at for 3 years.

Hope everyone is running well and staying healthy. I will try to catch up on the past week when I can.

I knew I was asking the right people about a tri! Isn't it funny that even after having done the Goofy, I need my WISH peeps to talk me through a new challenge? I knew I should get in the pool, but I needed my WISHers to tell me so I would do it!

And... I did 18 laps of the ginormous pool at the Y, so I think a little over 1/2 mile. I wanted to see if I could do the distance all in freestyle. I had to stop a lot, but if I allowed myself to switch up strokes, I might be ok. I'm a little scared of the open water (I was already having bad camp flashbacks just trying to deal with freestyle!);) I'd give anything for a snorkel exemption!!:rolleyes1

My new plan? I have 30 days, so I'm going to try to swim 8-10 more times and see what happens. I'm getting on Emma's bike this weekend to see if it will fit me. Worse case scenario? I panic and don't enter the race, but I've cross-trained for the first time in forever!

Whatever happens, I'm going to be at Fort Wilderness- whether it's actually in the race or cheering for Lynnda!!

Lynnda- thanks for the weather tips. We stayed at FW last year for the RFTT. I mostly remember it being insanely muggy! I may bug you with clothing questions soon if you don't mind...:rolleyes1

Jen, I hate to be a downer, but check your lap length at your Y pool. Ours is posted on the wall at the Y. Your pool may be a different size, but at ours, 18 laps is only a 1/4 mile. :guilty:

Mel- :lmao: Thanks! That's actually not a downer. My husband (who's more of a swimmer) thinks the distance is right, but I'll ask. If I'm wrong, then I can commit 100% to cheering cause I'd be hanging on a noodle for hours trying to double what I did yesterday! ;)

I'm going to try to stay off this board now so other people can get a chance to report their news. :rolleyes1

Managed to stay under the pace I need to break that 90 minute half I have been shooting at for 3 years.

Coming from someone who isn't sure if he'll break the 2 hour mark for the half this fall, let me just say, that's awesome!

BTW, do I smell a BQ as the next goal after that?

What's up everybody?

Jen - Good luck in whatever you decide. Sounds like fun.

Frank - Your times amaze me. Just under 2:20 is where my PR will probably stay. It's great to read how much you push yourself!

Got in 4 miles yesterday as my Goofy training is continuing. Really it feels like it never stopped. Rest day today and then back at it in the morning with my long run. 9 or 10 I hope. We'll see.

Thank you and thanks Chris. I just do the best I can. If the best you can is slower than me or faster than me and you push yourself it is just as impressive.

Well, my next goal is to finish a full marathon. I have no real time goal but want to run the whole thing. Depending on how I do I may try for Boston at the WDW full in 2011. My time is 3:10 though and as hard as a 90 minute half has turned out to be I can't imagine only losing 10 minutes over the next half. Maybe once my time drops, but I do get a whole 5 minutes longer to qualify once I am 25 in 3.5 years. :thumbsup2

Training is going well. I am starting the MfM plan in October. In the meantime I am running three times a week (3-3.5 miles/12:30) and commuting to work on my bicycle to crosstrain. Should I start running more sooner? I began from a standing start in January and feel like I've come a long way, but, if pressed, I could do more. I have been getting faster. I have doubts about being able to run the entire route. If I walk, I want it to be part of a plan. I expect to make a decsion about week six (six miles).

I've become obsessed with the accuracy of my Polar footpod. I've taken it to the HS track and have it zeroed in on my normal running pace. It over counts when I walk, but that's not what I'm there for, now is it? Instead of finding out I haven't been attending class and have a final, my nightmare is finding out on January 5 eight miles is really six.

Donald will be my first distance run. I did a four mile and 5K race this spring. Now I have experience getting there early, huddling with friends in the cold and getting into the correct corral . With no proof of pace, I expect to be in the last wave. I read in a TR that the medal is only given to those who finish at the sweep pace from the initial start (5:50 a.m.). It seems small, but those 25 minutes might matter to me. Does anyone have experience with this? Do timing and medals end @ 9:20 and not 9:45? Given that I may not cross the start until 6:25 (according to the watch-your-runner Disney site) it seems more dire.

If it's down to this, I guess I'm looking for something to worry about.
