Monstrous All-Nighter TR: Don't question it, just go

I would imagine that Carousel of Progress may be a popular spot to catch a nap late into the 24 hr party! That and perhaps Philharmagic! Too bad about the dad sporting some visible electronic stubble!

Foreshadowing! :)....

I am shocked, shocked that you never post your Perry pics to the Picture of the Day thread. ;)

Not food you want to race around eating, but Columbia Harbor House has bowls of chili or chowder -- and probably isn't open at two a.m. :upsidedow There are nuts at some snack carts -- they're sugared, but the protein balances that out a bit. But I agree that the MK is woefully short of non-sugary snacks. I usually bring a bag of (non-sweetened) roasted nuts for that reason. popcorn::

He will show up on the POTD eventually :p
I'll have to keep Columbia in mind for next time. It could have been open for all I know, quite a few things were. But yeah. Wish we had planned out the meals better!

Blake! Ah uh!

Jud here, just starting, and clearly you've never read any of my TR's! LOL!

Anytime anyone has to stay off site, just go to Motel 6, Main Gate EAST. 24-30 bucks depending on season and 95% of the time, clean and everything works. Look for discount code on google, reserve online, save a couple more bucks and no hidden fees- which almost ALL of the others do. I have stayed at pretty much every cheap motel in Kiss, and this is the only way to go.

And five minutes from Main Gate on 192, with a Publix and the cheapest gas in the are both on the way. MacDonalds out front, Olde Town across the street, Chinese restaurant on the corner. I recommend the second floor so no heavy feet at night.

:)

Love this TR!!

Keep it up, I can only imagine 24hrs at the MK

Thank you!!

Jud! Glad to see you here. I will definitely keep that in mind - that is good to know! (You mean you knew the whole time and didn't tell me before I left? ;))

Friday, May 24
3:45 p.m.

I'm not gonna lie... at this point, that 3 hours of sleep last night was starting to take its toll. :scared: Not to mention that at this point in any ordinary WDW day, I would pause to take a nap at the hotel anyway. But being offsite, the idea of leaving and coming back was unrealistic and cumbersome, so we stayed in the park. However, that didn't mean we couldn't get some rest.

We intentionally saved some of the more slow-going attractions for this time, many of which we either hadn't been experienced before, or had only done them years and years ago. Dylan decided to split up for some alone time, so on Main Street he split from me, Caleb, and Taylor.

We rode the Liberty Belle Riverboat (and we just so happened to see Dylan walking through Frontierland and waved to him haha). It was fun, but the sun was broiling. Great views from up there, though. :cool2:

Next up was Tom Sawyer Island. I remember it being SO awesome as a 7-year-old. Obviously, it's geared toward the younger set, but we still had our fill of fun. I don't even know how many times we walked across that barrel bridge. We got a kick out of that thing.

I got really thirsty and headed over to Aunt Polly's to get a refreshment, but the counter was closed (as I believe it usually is except for peak seasons ...maybe?), but thankfully there was a vending machine right next to it. Which would have been great if it actually worked. :crazy2: Several other guests tried to get it working too, and none of us succeeded. Kind of a bummer that there was absolutely no way to get any sort of drink on the entire island!

One of the best parts of Tom Sawyer Island for me was the views it afforded. Neat to see MK from a perspective we had never viewed before!

DSC_0152.JPG

Next... a cup of water lol. And then: The Hall of Presidents! It was all our first time inside. Caleb completely fell asleep, and I got pretty close. Not because it was the Hall of Presidents, but because the chairs were just so comfy haha. All of the Presidents looked fantastic except for the second George Bush. He looks nothing close to the realistic appearance all the other Presidents have. I enjoyed HOP but I have to say I prefer Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln at Disneyland more than the Hall of Presidents... maybe it's the more intimate theater setting.

At this point it was about time to go meet back up with Dylan. We told him we'd meet him at the Partners statue at 7:00. In another stroke of poor planning, we didn't realize that Move It Shake It Celebrate It would be happening at that time. I was secretly glad about this - I love that show but I knew we probably wouldn't get to see it today. But ha! We would (for a little bit, at least). Mike and Sulley were included on top of 2 of the floats as part of the day's Monstrous festivities. It ended up being easier to find Dylan than we thought.

DSC_0156.JPG

The plan now was to meet Mickey and then head to the Polynesian (yes, again!) to rest in order to get our second wind for the second half of the day. (It was bizarre to think it was only a little over halfway over!)

We had Fastpasses to meet Mickey, but they were expired. We tried them anyway, but the CM said we couldn't use them. We knew that might happen, but we figured it was worth a shot. The line wasn't too bad, though - only 10 minutes. In line, I asked a CM if Mickey and Minnie would be in their pajamas later. It was rumored, but nothing had been officially said yet. The CM replied, "I do not knooowwww!" and shrugged her shoulders. She either had a vibrant personality and was being honest that she really did not know, OR she was giving a clue (as in maybe she wasn't allowed to outright say yes). I really couldn't tell which one it was haha.

This was my first time in Town Square Theater and they have really done an excellent job with the place. I remember coming in that building back when it was Expo Hall. While I enjoyed it as a secluded, out-of-the-way place to rest and watch cartoons (we certainly could have used it for that purpose today!!), the meet & greet is a fantastic repurpose of space. And of course I like anything that has shades of Toontown. :)

DSC_0157.JPG

And then we met the main mouse! Dylan had actually come to meet Mickey by himself a few hours earlier while he was on his own, and the Photopass guy and Mickey actually remembered him! When the Photopass CM saw Dylan, he said, "Oh, you brought friends this time!" and then Dylan and Mickey continued their conversation they apparently had earlier about where Pluto was.

We got our picture, and on our way out the Character Attendant (a different one from the queue) called, "Will you be back tonight?" I knew exactly what she was getting at. I spun around quickly and immediately asked, "Will they be in their pajamas?!" The CM said nothing but raised her eyebrows and smiled. AFFIRMATIVE!!!!!!! It was true! (How did she know I wanted to ask that question?!) Yes, we will be back, thank you!

And then it was on to our second home, the Polynesian lol. (Remember we spent time here last night to relax on the beach.) Well, we did the same thing tonight. Dylan took to a hammock for a nap, while the rest of us claimed some lounge chairs on the beach. I got the same meal as yesterday (flatbread pizza and Polynesian chips :cloud9:) and it was nice to just sit down for an extended period of time without having to move haha.

As we relaxed, we noticed something soaring through the sky... a rocket! It was distant and faint, but we definitely think it was a rocket. Cool!! (I just looked it up... yep, it launched from Cape Canaveral!)

Soon, night fell and I got to experience yet another first: the Electrical Water Pageant. This thing is just plain awesome. I love how it's so not high-tech but it still performs every single night. It really is a slice of WDW history. Loved it!

DSC_0163.JPG

Not the best picture, but hey.

I went inside to get a drink and as I walked back onto the beach, I was hit with another surreal moment similar to this morning's New Fantasyland walkthrough. I was at the Polynesian, walking on the beach, next to water, and Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride was playing on the BGM. :stitch: Not a huge deal, but I thought it was cool.

CMs started setting up a movie screen soon, and the film being shown was Tangled! Kind of a cool note - we were watching Tangled and could see Celebrate the Magic (the castle projection show) happening in the distance, with the part where it looks like all the Tangled lanterns are being launched into the sky on the castle. Kinda neat.

Remember when I said there were pros and cons to not keeping up with social media earlier? Well, the con was not knowing about the webcam earlier. The pro was that we had no idea what was currently happening at the Magic Kingdom. The parking lot was completely full and guests were being sent to park at Epcot and take the monorail to MK. :scared1: Had we known this, I'm not sure what we would have done. We definitely would have stayed at the Polynesian a while long, and I really don't like to even think that that might have scared us away from going back to the park altogether. But we didn't know about any of that, and so we timed our return so that we could take the ferry boat across Seven Seas Lagoon during Wishes. Another new vantage point!

IMG_0337.JPG

Well, while we were enjoying ourselves and twiddling our thumbs on the boat, little did we know everyone on Main Street was... well, I'm getting ahead of myself. This wasn't a "monstrous" all-nighter for nothing...

Jud! Glad to see you here. I will definitely keep that in mind - that is good to know! (You mean you knew the whole time and didn't tell me before I left? ;))

Guess you didn't get the word, you're supposed to check in with me before you go to WDW! (Everything's changed since FB...) :rotfl2:

:)

As we ride, we realize how ridiculous our traveling has been that day. Let's just recap our transportation for the day:
-Car to Downtown Disney
-Bus to Contemporary
-Monorail to Polynesian
-Monorail to TTC
-Monorail to Epcot
-Monorail to TTC
-Monorail to Epcot
-Monorail to TTC
-Ferry to Magic Kingdom
-Walk to Contemporary
-Bus to Downtown Disney
-Car to Days Inn...

Blake!

There ya go! That's how the pros do it! Who needs a silly theme park to do a day at Disney??? Great day you did here! Love the Epcot Monorail through Illuminations! I would have NEVER thought to go round a second time!

While I was reading the hours of your return to hotel and sleep, it dawned on me- at those exact times, I was lying in my bed at Motel 6 Main Gate East, waiting for a phone call or PM from a friend who was trying to get me added to the special Monsters Meet up at 4:30! It took several back and forth's over the next few hours, but he did, but alas, given certain circumstances, I didn't. I did later attend the movie premier, but never got to the park.

:)

I love the "monorail for Illuminations" thing, did I mention that?

But being offsite, the idea of leaving and coming back was unrealistic and cumbersome, so we stayed in the park. However, that didn't mean we couldn't get some rest.

We've never actually taken a nap, but eldest and I have been known to stretch out in that lounge area by the Contempo Cafe in the Contemporary or on one of the sofas at the Poly in the afternoon... :ssst:

Next up was Tom Sawyer Island. I remember it being SO awesome as a 7-year-old. Obviously, it's geared toward the younger set, but we still had our fill of fun. .

My younger ones really enjoy it even as teens and preteens, but they would have lasted longer there as little ones.

One of the best parts of Tom Sawyer Island for me was the views it afforded. Neat to see MK from a perspective we had never viewed before!

One of my favorite things to do in the parks is sitting on one of the rocking chairs on that dock below the fort and watching the cars zip by on the BTMR. A nice combination of relaxing but still involved in the general energy of the place. :goodvibes

It ended up being easier to find Dylan than we thought.

::yes::

The crowds for Move It, Shake It are surprisingly mellow, in my experience. Might be different if we really wanted to dance with one of the more popular characters, I suppose -- my kids like to dance with the dancers rather than the characters.

Green with envy, here (and you didn't take any pictures? :sad2: ). We were there for a launch, but it was so cloudy that my hubby, who drove over to Cape Canaveral, barely got a shot of it before it disappeared; no way could I see anything from Orlando. *sigh*

Soon, night fell and I got to experience yet another first: the Electrical Water Pageant. This thing is just plain awesome. I love how it's so not high-tech but it still performs every single night. It really is a slice of WDW history. Loved it!

Just wanted to say "yes" to all this. Sums up my feelings perfectly. :)

Argh! Another cliff hanger!!

You're over half way through... and still awake... and coherent. I think you are doing great!!!

I had a doh! moment when I saw that you chose to go to the Poly to do more than eat. Yes, I'm sure those loungers were calling to you! :lmao:

Love, love, love movies on the beach and since it was Tangled, I would have died if I saw the projection of the lanterns in the back ground with the movie - so awesome!!!

I now have the organ music of the Electric Water Pageant in my head now....It is a pretty cool show. If you look to the left of the monorail station at MK (right before the resort monorail pulls into the station) you'll see where the barges are stored during the day. Interesting tid bit there.

I'm looking forward to your next, what 8 hours or so of adventures.....

We still laugh about the monorail thing. One of my proudest Disney moments, if I do say so. :)

I had tried to get into the Monstrous Meet-Up, but wouldn't you know it, on the morning they announced it, I had slept in. From the reports I saw it looked like lots of fun! But in retrospect I know we wouldn't have made it to Be Our Guest if we made the Meet-Up, so it all worked out.

We've never actually taken a nap, but eldest and I have been known to stretch out in that lounge area by the Contempo Cafe in the Contemporary or on one of the sofas at the Poly in the afternoon... :ssst:

Ah, you are right, those areas at the Contemporary would have been perfect!! Kicking myself now. The Poly was nice for sure, but it would have been much easier to fall asleep on the couches lol.

I think we found that very dock you are talking about. Really secluded and it almost looks like you shouldn't be there because of how minimal the safety ropes keep you from just jumping in the river? That one? We spent a good while there, really enjoyed it.

And, since you said that about the rocket, I went back and checked - turns out I didn't take any pictures but I did take a video! So I just put it on YouTube... not too clear, obviously, but still. Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnkltVCGol0

I guess that's what that random path is for that looks like it is going to the Grand Floridian? I always feel so sorry for guests who think it takes them to their hotel. It's even lit at night, like what the heck! Is Disney trying to be all, "Here, go this way," then they're like "Just kidding, we got you!"

Really secluded

I don't think of it as really secluded, but I suppose by WDW terms it is. ;)

So I just put it on YouTube... not too clear, obviously, but still.

Lovely! Beautiful time of day to be seeing it, too. Now I'm even more jealous. :thumbsup2

Is Disney trying to be all, "Here, go this way," then they're like "Just kidding, we got you!"

:rotfl2:

That's how I've always felt about that. I wonder how many newbies actually get faked out by that path. :scratchin It would be quite the walk to the Grand Floridian, though -- almost twice as far as the Contemporary. I think they don't run it across less because of the canals and more because they don't want to mess up the access road below the monorail and that building and dock right opposite the end of the path to nowhere. They'd also have to do a lot of landscaping; it's a much more isolated area than other paths from various resorts to the parks or (in the case of Saratoga Springs) to Downtown Disney. Those other paths would mostly be landscaped anyhow.

you have a great writing style! glad you came back to update. what a great trip to take with your friends.

Friday, May 24
10:00 p.m.

Well-rested, refreshed, and ready to take on anything, we oohd and aaahs our little hearts out on the ferry boat from the Polynesian to Magic Kingdom as Wishes happened in the distance.

IMG_0338.JPG

There were still 8 whole hours left of playtime, and if this was anything like the first 24-hour day from 2012 (which we had researched online beforehand), we'd have the parks to ourselves soon enough! Turns out, it wasn't anything like the first event. Not at ALL. 2012's all-nighter happened on Leap Day, in the middle of the off-season. This time, it was right at the kickoff of the busy summer season, on Memorial Day weekend no less.

Like I said, we were staying away from social media to conserve our phones' batteries. We had no idea the park had been getting busier and busier while we were propping our feet up at the Poly. No idea that droves of locals were driving in after getting off work. No idea that a boatload of guests from Star Wars Weekends had just wrapped up festivities at DHS and were moving on over to MK for the late hours. No idea that the Magic Kingdom parking lot had filled up and guests were being sent to Epcot to park their cars. So we approached the MK turnstiles with a general plan: Get Fastpasses to see Mickey & Minnie in their pajamas, explore the park at our leisure, do the attractions we hadn't done yet, play Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom, and do these fun little mystery challenges that our friend back home had made for us (kind of like Amazing Race... all sealed tasks for us to complete). That was the plan.

And the moment we passed through the railroad tunnel... welltheregoesouritineraryforthenight.

:eek::scared1::crazy2::faint::scared::scared1:

People. EVERYWHERE.

Actually, in Town Square, it wasn't that bad. Sure, there was a throng of people on Main Street, but that was typical since the fireworks were still happening, right? That was to be expected. Oh, and look, they have the backstage pathway behind Main Street open to cut through the park and avoid the fireworks crowd. Perfect! We'll get our Fastpasses for Mickey and Minnie and be on our way behind Main Street! I picked up the Fastpasses, and then we all proceeded to go backstage, but a CM stopped us and said the path was only for guests exiting the park, not entering it. Well, ok, no big deal. We'll just cut through the Main Street gift shops! Wrong. Silly us, thinking this would be solved rationally! Honestly, if we had known what was ahead of us, we would have been better off finding a bench and plopping ourselves down for a good 45 minutes, and I'm not even exaggerating.

DSC_0165.JPG

At that moment, Wishes ended. Now, everyone has been in the park after the fireworks. It's a madhouse trying to exit MK after Wishes because there are just people everywhere, right? But at least on most nights, the end of Wishes means the park is closed and everyone is moving in one direction, with CMs doing a pretty good job at keeping the crowd flowing quickly. Now imagine that entire existing crowd exiting the park - with just as many people trying to get into the park.

It was insanity. It was unlike anything I have ever seen. Guests everywhere. Literally no room to move. We quickly realized it was a very real possibility that we would get split up in the madness, and decided to meet at Pirates of the Caribbean, no matter how long it took us to get there. Sure enough, soon Caleb was out of sight. It took me, Taylor, and Dylan a good 15 minutes to get through the Emporium, and once we were outside the Crystal Palace we stood still unable to move for 30 minutes (not kidding). It was awful. Children were crying, parents were bickering with each other, and at one point there was even a Cast Member trying to get through pushing a guest in a wheelchair, shouting "Excuse us, we're on our way to First Aid, please make room!" and there was nothing anyone could do about it. That was when it really clicked with me how bad this was. Of course we would let this poor guest through, but literally no one could move an inch.

I would have taken a picture of the huge crowd, but I just remember thinking that would be like a slap in the face to the CMs. They were doing such an admirable job at trying to keep everyone happy and in check, but whatever system was in place simply did not work for this event. As we finally started moving (SLOWLY), a CM on the Adventureland bridge remarked to every passing guest, "Just keep swimming!" It made me smile, but others were not so humored and blatantly told the CM their frustration was no cause for a cute Disney joke. (Come on, people...)

So... by about 11, we finally made it to Pirates of the Caribbean. But wait! Where was----

Meanwhile, with Caleb:
Somehow, Caleb got routed in a completely different direction when we got split up in the Emporium. Even though he was trying to get to Adventureland, the way he went all guests were being funneled through the backstage Main Street path - BACK to the front of the park. There was no use trying to explain that was going backwards because that was just the only way anyone was allowed to go at that point. So he went through the backstage path, BACK to Town Square, then eventually ended up on the Tomorrowland side of the hub and had to walk all the way around the park, eventually getting to Pirates via Frontierland. A Cast Member he spoke with on the way told him she had worked here for years and she'd NEVER seen it this bad.

So that's what went down.

In the midst of all that, we overheard quite a few angry guests just give up and turn right back around to go back to their hotels. (Honestly, though, they'd have just as hard a time trying to get out of the park as getting in, so what was the point in that?) Also, that never once was a possibility for us because it wasn't like this was one portion of a bigger vacation. THIS day was the trip. It was our only day in the park, and we sure didn't want to throw it away to head back to the Days Inn, no matter how crowded it was. ;)

Pirates was being hounded with people entering the queue, but really we knew the same would be true for every attraction in the park by then, so there was no use trying to make up another plan. We did know, though, that Fastpasses would cut off at... I think it was midnight. Either midnight or 1 am. You could still *use* Fastpasses after that time, but you couldn't *get* them after then. So I hightailed it over to Jungle Cruise real quick to get some for later.

And then I made a very sad discovery: There would be no way we'd see Mickey and Minnie in their pajamas. :( Our Fastpasses were for 11 to 12, and we were NOT about to try to go down Main Street after just escaping that mess. That's my biggest regret of the trip because I know how awesome of a photo-op that would have been, and how unique of a souvenir it would make of staying up all night. So, yeah. I still have those Fastpasses. Unused. To meet Mickey and Minnie IN THEIR PAJAMAS. :headache: But I just had to let it go because I knew there was absolutely nothing anyone could do about it.

But hey, now I have renewed confidence for future trips. I feel like if I survived *THAT* post-Wishes incident... other crowds won't seem like hardly anything. It was horrendous, and from what I understand it was a lot similar to how the "Unleash the Villains" event went last month at Hollywood Studios (another Limited Time Magic event, this one when DHS was open until 1 am and ensued in huge crowds for villain meet & greets and fireworks). Hopefully Disney observed what the issues were with both these events and will fix them for future special nights!

I'd be curious to hear some of your crowd horror stories. What do you even do when there's absolutely nothing you can do??

Wow! Madness!! That was insane crowds. We did the 24 hrs of Disney on Leap Day last year and it was craziness at Disneyland but since they made it Memorial Day weekend this year we said NO Way! At last you made the best of it. There was really nothing you could do.

Do you think Disney should have said they were at capacity and closed the park at some point? I know Disneyland did that for about 2-3 hours last year. When the lines were encircling the esplanade between Disneyland and California Adventure and the park is already full, they just didn't have any other choice.

I'm still looking forward to seeing how your last 8 hours or so goes. :)

Looking back, they maybe should have not let anyone go IN until after most people exiting post-fireworks had gotten OUT. But I feel like that's one of those things they never could have known until after the fact, since the park technically never got to capacity. (It just felt that way with almost everyone being in one area.)

I was shocked to hear guests started lining up to enter DL for the 24 hours at 10pm the night before! No, thank you!

Friday, May 24
11:15 p.m.

The worst was behind us. We were afraid that the rest of the night would continue to be as horrendous as the Main Street episode, but thankfully it wasn't.

At the moment, though, there were will people everywhere! Not knowing what else to do, we headed into Pirates as it was the closest attraction and there was no use trying to navigate anywhere else. The wait sign said 20 minutes, but guests were lined up all the way to the first entrance. It was a mob scene! As a pleasant surprise, though, the sign was correct and we chugged through the line in no time despite the (seemingly) large crowd.

We all love Pirates of the Caribbean. pirate: This was my first time seeing the mermaids and I must say they are underwhelming. We almost didn't notice them. I feel like Disney would have been better off just putting them there without saying anything - then guests could be like, "Ooh, look mermaids, neat!" if they happen to see them. Instead, they advertised it as a big hullabaloo and it leaves you wondering, "Oh, that's it?" Also - what the heck, why is Blackbeard still on the water screen and not Davy Jones? I like Pirates 4 ok, but Blackbeard is just not that great of a villain. Grrr I'm Blackbeard, I act scary but I'm really not. :surfweb: Anyway. Soapbox over.

It was nearing midnight by the time we exited Pirates, so we headed to the Castle to see Celebrate the Magic. Things had calmed down by now and the Hub was walkable. I absolutely LOVE the castle projection technology, but overall it just seemed like we were watching a bunch of random Disney scenes with no connection to each other. Lots of really cool sequences--like Wreck-It Ralph, for instance--but where's the story that ties them together like we see in Wishes and Fantasmic? They have the paintbrush theme going on, but I don't think that's enough. I really, really like Celebrate the Magic, but I'm ready for WDW to follow Disneyland Paris's lead and combine the technology in this show with the nightly fireworks show for one megashow! (This would also eliminate the amount of time people are standing around in the Hub - if they're only there for 1 show using both technologies and not 2 shows using them 1 at a time, then the crowds would evaporate from that area quicker!)

IMG_0319.JPG

My favorite part of Celebrate the Magic is hands-down the way they incorporate the tiny bit of pyro they use. If you watch carefully, each fireworks stream starts as a projection on the castle before it shoots out as a real firework. Very clever!!

Now it was time for our Jungle Cruise Fastpasses! Jungle Cruise at night was really fun - it adds a whole different dynamic to the attraction, and our skipper was great. The best joke was definitely when he said, "If you missed our Wishes nighttime spectacular earlier, allow me to perform a recreation." Then he flickered the boat's light on and off while singing in a very dry, monotone voice "Wiiiishessss.... duh nuh nuh nuh nuh nuh." :lmao:

We continued our grand tour of Adventureland with the Magic Carpets of Aladdin, which had a short wait. It was at this point that we decided to attempt our friend's challenges. One of our buddies couldn't come on the trip because of work, but he sent us sealed envelopes with Amazing Race-ish challenges. We figured we'd do them all in the late hours since the park would be empty (....ahaha yeah right). As fun as the challenges were written to be, most of them were sadly impractical with the park being so crowded and with our phone batteries being so low :( The first one we opened read, "One person go to Splash Mountain, one to Space Mountain, another to Haunted Mansion, another to the Castle. Find each other without cell phone communication." Well, that wasn't going to work! :haha: I really wish we had started doing them earlier, they would have been so much fun. A reason to go back, I guess!! One of the challenges that we could do, though, was: "Sing an attraction's song on a different attraction." So, yes, we were the idiots singing "It's a Small World" on Aladdin's Carpets.

Next up, Tiki Room! I hadn't been inside it since the traumatic Iago meltdown (see what I did there), and I enjoyed it. Very vintage WDW! At the end when they sing "Heigh-Ho," I guess that could have counted toward our challenges too. :joker:

I honestly don't remember if we did the Swiss Family Treehouse. I have no recollection of it, but it seems like if we were right there, we would have done it in our quest to do everything in the park... hmmmm. I really don't remember! :confused3

Time check: Saturday, May 25
1:00 a.m.

We were all getting tired, and we knew, as long and wonderful as this day was, our time was starting to tick. Caleb wanted to ride Splash Mountain again (the wait was about 40 minutes), but I would rather see the Main Street Electrical Parade. That was another thing about traveling with friends--you obviously have to pick and choose your preferences and go with what the majority wants. If I had been alone, I probably would have sought out more of the exclusive special events happening throughout the park just for the 24-hour night. Mike and Sulley were in Tomorrowland (as was a nighttime screening of Monsters, Inc.), Jack Sparrow had a rare meet & greet in Adventureland, the aforementioned mice in pajamas, and a dance party at the Hub, among other things. (There also ended up being an unannounced Frontierland Hoedown around 3:00... wish I would have known that because I've been wanting to see that for a while! :headache:) But I knew the others weren't huge fans of characters so I went along with sticking with attractions.

That being said... I did really want to see the Electrical Parade. I'd never seen it (SpectroMagic, yes, Electrical Parade, not yet), AND how often can you say you watched a Disney parade at 1 in the morning? So Dylan and I grabbed a spot for the parade right near the Frontierland parade gate while Caleb and Taylor went to ride Splash Mountain. I checked my watch. 1:00 exactly. "Perfect! We're right where the parade starts and we got a great spot just in time!" Well, remember my bad luck with parade directions? It struck again! Because of course, if both daytime parades had started in Frontierland, why would it be logical to think that the nighttime parade would do the same thing?

So just like earlier, we waited a good 30 minutes for the parade to get there haha. It was worth it, though! Great parade, love the music. Favorite part was probably the opening train (such an iconic float) and seeing all 7 of the dwarfs. And of course seeing all the characters frollicking about like it's no big deal that they're dancing through the park at 1:30 in the morning.

Meanwhile, with Caleb...
Taylor ended up waiting outside of Splash Mountain to rest while Caleb rode it. He said it was the worst ride he's ever had on Splash Mountain! The logs were backed up big time, all throughout the ride. Major log jam throughout the whole thing. It got to the point where eventually they shut all the Animatronics and sound off so everything was frozen and super creepy. :scared1: When we all regrouped together again after the parade, he said he never wanted to hear "Br'er Fox and Br'er Bear are causin' some commotion upstream" ever again!

So it's now 2:00 in the morning. And we're in the Magic Kingdom. And things are operating just as they would be at 2:00 in the afternoon. You know, no big deal. That surreal factor never really left us! But we were getting tired. We were almost there. Enter: the home stretch.

I was reading another TR where they had photos of the TL area where they were showing Monsters Inc. and people were conked out on the carpet set up in front of the screen. I'd be out if I laid down for 2 seconds. How DID you stay awake?

Loved the challenge of singing the theme from one attraction on another. It's a Big Bright Beautiful Tomorrow... would go nicely with Astro Orbiter. It's probably not a good idea to try that at Hall of Presidents though.

That's so cool to watch the parade in the middle of the night.

I can't wait to hear about the home stretch.

Saturday, May 25
2:00 a.m.

This is when the "3 hours of sleep before spending 24 hours in a theme park" really started to kick in. Aye. Seriously. I have almost no pictures from these hours. So tired!

We all got back together, and were all pretty hungry. We heard that there was hot breakfast food at Casey's Corner, so we headed there. By this point the "Up All Night" dance party was in full swing at the castle. We were more interested in rides, but it looked like fun if you're into that sort of thing.

Casey's indeed had a ton of breakfast stuff, but not too much for vegetarians like me and Dylan. Taylor and Caleb got their food and sat at a table outside while I went to go find food elsewhere - Dylan did the same, but split up from me. I headed down Main Street, looking for anything - all I could find was ice cream and popcorn. Again, the thing about MK being great for incredible junk snacks but not snacks of substance. Of course I should have thought to go inside the Emporium and just get something packaged (like nuts or crackers or something), but my brain wasn't all there at 2 am, to be honest. I ended up getting popcorn. popcorn::

BUT I also had a secret hidden agenda in walking down Main Street: check on the characters. The street was almost empty by now, nowhere near the crowds from the post-fireworks trauma. Unfortunately Mickey and Minnie had a standby wait of 75 minutes, and our Fastpasses were expired. :( BUT, Chip and Dale in their pajamas at City Hall had a relatively short wait. The others wouldn't care if I met the chipmunks without them, as they're not huge character fans anyway. I just had to be quick so that I didn't slow down our touring. The line was short-ish, but Chip and Dale happened to be on their break when I got in line. After about 7 minutes of waiting without them coming out, I gave up and walked away out of consideration for the rest of the group.

Turns out I could have stayed in line for quite a while, because the others were so worn out that we didn't move from our Casey's Corner table for a good 45 more minutes. We just sat there looking at each other without saying a word, and everyone was completely fine with that. We were so tired! :faint:

Sometime in the middle of that, Dylan left to go get food. I assumed he was just going inside Casey's, and got a little worried when he didn't come back for a while, especially since all our phones were dead. About 30 minutes and somewhat-frantic-big-brother-mindset kick-in later, he returned and said he went to Gaston's Tavern. What??! Well, ok, as long as you're back!

We finally decided to move and continue our checklist: just a few more attractions and we'd have done everything in the park! We headed back to Tomorrowland (seemed like our second home lol). Mike and Sulley were meeting in their college gear - we opted not to meet them. Monsters, Inc. the movie was playing on the Club 626 stage... fun idea if you needed rest. On any ordinary night, though, I would never give up theme park time to watch a movie, though! (But then again, I did just spend a solid hour sitting at a table doing nothing, so I can't really talk. :rolleyes2)

Astro Orbiter was so much fun at nighttime - I probably hadn't ridden that in 10 years. Stitch was good, too. I never rode Alien Encounter so I can't compare it to that, but my whole family was nuts about Stitch when his movie first came out, so we'll always be big fans of his (though I do get why some people aren't). As we waited to enter the building, we decided one of the worst CM jobs must be the person who stands outside Stitch's Great Escape, as you have to hear him say "Nala queesta!!!" literally every 20 seconds. :stitch: :scared:

Next up, Tomorrowland Speedway. Wheeeee.

DSC_0177.JPG

We passed by the Hundred Acre Wood gang in Fantasyland - all 4 of them together (Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, and Eeyore) with hardly a wait. Taylor stopped and said, "Oh, look! All 4 of them! I love Winnie the Pooh!" I asked if she wanted to stop, but she said no. I probably should have asked 1 more time because I have a feeling she really *did* want to stop, but didn't want to hold everyone up. We rode Pooh's ride. Yay.

Time check: 5:15

We had to pick and choose what we wanted to do with the time we had left - we realized probably wouldn't get to everything. BUT the list of what we didn't do was very short: Buzz Lightyear, Mad Tea Party, Small World, Swiss Family Treehouse. Everything else we did. Not bad!

We went to Small World, but it had already closed for the night/morning/day/whatever. Same thing with Haunted Mansion and Little Mermaid (but we had ridden those earlier so it was ok.) There were some ANGRY guests outside the Haunted Mansion. The poor Cast Member standing outside had to be the bearer of bad news, saying that the ride had already closed. When they countered that with, "But the park is open until 6!," he replied, "Yes, but that really means that everyone must be off the ride by 6." Caleb and I looked at each other - we both knew good and well that the Golden Rule of Theme Park Law is that you can enter any attraction's line up until closing time - as long as you are in line by closing time, you are good to ride. Obviously we knew things were different for the 24-hour day, and we understood that some rides needed some downtime to be prepared in time for the next day's operating day. But those people outside the Haunted Mansion sure didn't get it. I felt so sorry for the CM, they were getting pretty miffed.

With the bittersweet realization that we had 30 minutes left in the Magic Kingdom---we did it!!... but, it's almost time to leave---we headed back to Fantasyland. We decided our final rides would be the carrousel and Mickey's PhilharMagic - something I had secretly hoped would be our final attractions all day long, as that is tradition for my family. PhilharMagic embodies so well what Walt Disney World and The Walt Disney Company itself is all about, and is my all-time favorite thing in WDW. It usually is a perfect final attraction for a Disney trip. But when you are deadbeat tired, those comfy chairs are a little too comfy. I honestly have no recollection of the Lion King scene whatsoever. I was dozing off bigtime.

DSC_0181.JPG

We exited the building, and... well, I'm sure I don't need to describe the feeling we had to anyone on this website. You all know that feeling exactly. When your visit to this magical place has come to an end - the celebration of quality time well spent, but hesitance to leave its protection.

Time check: 5:45

The Up All Night dance party was still kickin' in the Hub, so we decided to park it there for the remaining 15 minutes, knowing we didn't have enough time to squeeze in another attraction and not wanting to exit the park until 6am officially struck! A quick note about the characters included in the dance party - Goofy, Donald, Daisy, Pluto, and Stitch. I love that, so much. Like I said, I am a huge Stitch fan, and grew up with Stitch being everywhere in Disney marketing, including the forefront of most publicity items right along with Mickey and friends. I don't know if y'all remember that too, but (in a way very similar to Roger Rabbit in the '90s) Stitch used to be EVERYWHERE, having as much prominence as Mickey's crew and often appearing right with them, among them, as if he belonged in their world, and I've always associated him that way. In recent years, he's been understandably degraded as his popularity waned, and I was thrilled to see him back with Mickey's pals for the dance party. I don't know if Disney put that much thinking and analysis into it as I did, but it made me smile. :)

In 2012's 24-hour day, there had been no closing fanfare. Today's Times Guide said there would be the Kiss Goodnight at 5:55, so that was exciting, but it was the same thing that happens every night (where the Castle sparkles and there is a closing audio announcement). Because I did not expect anything to happen, when Dylan asked if he could go to the bathroom and meet us back at the Hub, I said yes. I hesitated. I really did. All our phones were busted, and I knew if anything happened for Park Closing and we were to move, we'd never find each other. But I said yes anyway.

And then it was to everyone's great surprise when the dance party DJ told everyone to "Follow the characters to Town Square for a special surprise!":hyper::faint:

CRAP. DYLAN'S NOT BACK YET. At this point I had to choose between being a good big brother and experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime Disney nerd moment. I knew it would be difficult to find Dylan, and he'd have no idea where we went, BUT we would find each other eventually, so I said screw the whole thing and we followed those characters. I wasn't missing this!

The characters hopped aboard a Move It Shake It parade float and Parade music (I think from Paris?) played on the loudspeakers the song from The Tigger Movie, "Your Heart Will Lead You Home" (but it was a very upbeat version, not the slow Kenny Loggins version lol). It was then that it really hit me how special of an experience this whole day had been. I can't tell you how many times I've sat from home during a Disney special event, looking at all the photos, videos, and tweets coming in during and after it wishing I could be there. And now I was there, at one of them!

Artsy shot of a random stranger's head, but retains artistic value because of the logo on the shirt that labels the photo's setting. See what marvelous thinking went into this picture? :artist: JK, it was lucky and I just thought of that. But you believed me.

We got to Town Square, along with everyone else, and the dance party characters (along with Mickey, Minnie, Chip, and Dale!!) ascended to the train station balcony. Again, really wish my parents knew about the live webcam because this moment would have been awesome. As the characters took their places, I spotted Dylan trying to find us near the Chapeau. I scurried over and fetched him, then returned to our spot right near the flagpole. I kind of knew what might happen... and was not disappointed when it did. They were going to sing the Mickey Mouse Club goodbye song.

"Now's the time to say goodbye
to all our company..."

Let me tell you, it was kinda hard not to get a little misty-eyed. It was such an incredible experience, and now it was time to leave it all.

"M-I-C
See ya real soon!
K-E-Y
Why? Because we like you!
M-O-U-S-E"

:sad::wizard:

A Cast Member said on a microphone right after that (politely, but still) that there was nothing else left and that the event was over. Translation: Get out of the park so we can clean up all your cap and get this place ready to open in less than 3 hours. ;) As we exited, Caleb looked at his watch - 5:55. They really wanted us out of there! The CM said that Mickey and Minnie would wave goodbye on the other side of the train station. They did so, but only very briefly.

DSC_0198.JPG

It was then we realized the ingenious plan for traffic flow to get everyone out of the park as quickly as possible. We thought back to how everything had happened... all of the major rides closed early, forcing you to either ride the smaller attractions or go to the dance party. Most people probably picked dance party, conveniently located right in the center of the park. Then there was the goodbye ceremony, which of course wasn't at the castle, but at the very front of the park, meaning if you wanted to see it, you had to walk quickly to the exit. And what hardcore Disney fan isn't going to want to see the special closing? THEN, to really make sure you were out, OF COURSE Mickey and Minnie waved goodbye on the OPPOSITE side, so you had to exit the park to get a good picture of them. And OF COURSE they didn't stay out long, so you rushed to get a good picture but really couldn't and then were already out of the park so you had no choice but to leave. Brilliant. They got us good! :) (BTW they didn't even wait until we left to take down the Monstrous All-Nighter banner, CMs were taking that thing down right in front of us as we walked away lol.)

So, alas, our magical day had come to an end. No one spoke a word on the way back to the Days Inn.... in fact, Taylor, Dylan, and I were all asleep before we even left Disney property. Caleb said he was really tired driving, but at no point were we ever of him falling asleep at the wheel. Bravo, Caleb! :hippie:

The #Disney24 part of our trip may have been over, but the visit to Orlando wasn't quite over yet. There was still one last bit of fun to be had.

Blake, thank you so much for sharing your All Nighter experience! I've thoroughly enjoyed this. I hope you have more trips in the near future and TRs since I love reading your reports!

As for the home stretch last few hours....

I've snoozed in Philharmagic without even being up all night! What a great way to end your all nighter with a favorite.

Your commentary regarding Stitch being more prominent years ago made me remember how he was featured in Disneyland's Innoventions - it was a speak with Stitch experience that was so well done. That was an often visited attraction during that time.

I saw several videos of the farewell show on YouTube and thought what an epic thing to be a part of. And for you to be there and experience that - awesome!!! (You definitely made the right decision to ditch Caleb to move to Town Square!)

I look forward to the non-Disney fun of your trip next. :)

I just found your TR and had to read the whole thing in one sitting! I guess your TR is almost over but I'll definitely be back to read the ending parts!
