When we go at the end of Sept. I plan on doing a little X-mas shopping for my kiddos. I'm interested in the monorail set and would like to know:
A) How much is it about?
B) The size of the box, we are flying in from Chicago, should I have it shipped home or would I be able to pack it to fly home with it?

And also are there any other train sets that are Disney themed available?

A)About how much are they
B)Again, how big are the boxes that they come in?

Thanks if you can help me, my DS 2 is wildly fanatical about trains. We leave near train tracks and whenever he hears the whistle he will rant for minutes on end about the 'choo choo'. :confused3

Both of my DS are crazy about trains too. On our last trip DS2 fell in love with the monorail while we were at Epcot. I know that they do have both the monorail and a train set. I can not remember what price exactly I am thinking that they were over $100 but I could be wrong. The boxes were about the same size that you would find a battery operated train set at a toy store.

We leave on Monday going back down for a quick trip and I will look at them again if someone else does not have a better answer for you.

These sets go for $89 plus shipping on eBay, battery powered.

That's a bit too high to pay.

I bought mine a couple of years ago at WDW when they were $60 for a set.

They sell them NOW on-line at various vendors who buy and re-sell Disney park items (with a profit mark-up).
They are priced THERE at $75-$80 so the trains are probably still around $60 at the parks.

Really not a bad price. They are very nice and well-built.

They have part of the "announcements" audio built into the engine section.
(But no, "Por favor mantange se alejado de las puertas".

The Monorail Toy says "Please stand clear of the doors" & it also says Por favor mantange se alejado de las puertas".

If YOURS does, that means they changed the audio chip in them.

Mine says:
"Please stay clear of the doors."
"On behalf of the cast of the Walt Disney World Resort, welcome to the Magic Kingdom."
"No smoking please."
"Please hold on to the hand rails"

(I know this because I just ran down to the basement and opened my monorail storage box in the midst of the stored Christmas decorations, put in the batteries and here I sit, in July, listening to a toy train I only set up at Christmas, "talk" to me.) :goodvibes

BTW: The voice is not that of Jack Wagner (the man whose famous voice says, "Por favor..." on the monorail)
but it is an edited version of that of the newer Disney "voice talent" who performs all the rest of the monorail "speils" that you hear on-board.

Last trip I bought a large duffle bag and stuffed it in the original bags. Depending on your airline bagage policy you can check the extra bag. Most major airlines allow 1 carryon/2 checked or 3 checked per passenger. So a family of 4 (ticketed passengers) could have 12 bags.

The box the original monorail comes in is about 4" high, 12" wide, and 30 " long.It is packed inside with lots of styrofoam, but what I do is surround the box with dirty laundry (kill two birds, one stone thing) since the duffle bag is soft. My guess the cost of a new duffle bag would be cheaper than shipping it home. If you can't find a large enough duffle bag, go to your local sporting goods store and find a large hockey equipment bag, plus most of the newer bags have wheels to roll like some school bookbags do now, but are soft enough to fold up into another bag. An old army duffle bag works great too!

When my husband bought the monorail and the buildings on our last trip, we had it shipped home. It was very easy and there is no tax. It was very nice not to carry anything and it arrived in about a week. We bought all in one day and everything was packaged carefully so it did not break. I will do that always now.

we have the set, along with the contemporary, spaceship earth, the poly, and the grand floridian. what I need is extra track. do they sell that? if yes, its all still the same size as when they first released it, right?

I love those messages

Yes they do sell extra tracks and now I understand there are other items like people etc you can add.

ooooh...it has the spanish announcement now, too? now I want to get a second monorail set. ooooh....I could have a really big set with 2 trains running....hmmm....

I wish they would offer a 1/87'th (HO) scale version. That would go nicely with my other model trains. For now I am holding off buying one. I think that most model trains made are that size still.

I do not think it is a good idea to pack it in soft sided luggage or duffle bags except with a sturdy oversized corrugated box around it as if you were going to send it UPS. (You can pad the inside of the corrugated box with dirty laundry too, but do not stuff it very tight.)

I wouldn't COUNT in that.

Until I hear from someone who can transcribe EXACTLY what the "audio chip" says, (like I did from mine) I'm not going to change my mind.

(I HOPE they added it, but I'm still skeptical.)

We ordered directly from Disney Parks merchandising and our monorail was $60. Shipping was reasonable if I remember, around 7-8 bucks? Mousesavers has the phone number on their site.

I would just ship it home . You don't pay taxes so it comes out about the same.

Mine is the the Gold series 50th Ann. and it's just as Robo's . I have seen the newer version on E-bay ( in june they only had the gold still) it's a Blue line with characters in it the doors open and top lifts up to place the characters in.

I paid $40 new in box for mine as at the time both WDW & DL had none .

If you want to see a few Disney trains I have 2 a HO scale collectable from Hawthore ( not complete yet) and the N guage from DL .

You can see them in the TINK ROOM thread in my SIG.

Pretty sure they are still $60 in the parks. We're leaving in 1 week so I'll check then. I'm curious to see if there is a "new color" out. They seem to change the monorail color about once a year. So far there has been Monorail Red, Black, Yellow, Purple, and Gold (I think that's it). I'm still kicking myself for not buying Monorail Purple a couple of years ago. It's my favorite one, and now it's discontinued!

So you know, if you're down there and buy ship it...if you ship out of state you don't pay any sales tax and the shipping costs are almost the same as the tax. Plus if it gets damaged-they replace it ASAP. I used to do this a lot for guests when I worked there.

I vote for shipping it home. WDW has done a really nice job with packing everything we have had shipped.

With respect to the monorails, when we went in May, it seemed like the accessories were being scaled back or discontinued. I don't know if that means they are gone for good, or if they plan some new pieces. We always run ours at Christmas. I have one train that seems to struggle getting around the track(even with new batteries) while the other one does a pretty good job. We have had our set for several years and I think we have all the WDW accesories(we don't have any of the DLR stuff).:earsboy:

We have the LIONEL Mickey Christmas train set, and have been fairly happy with it.
