Monorail Refurb & How It Affects MK Resorts

Hi all, we will be staying at the GF from 8/15-8/23. One of our favorite things about the resort is the close proximity to MK and the convenience of being on the monorail. However, given that the monorail construction is lasting until this December, how does the refurb affect the resort monorail schedule? On every website I have looked, it just says something along the lines of the service will be delayed, etc. How bad does this really affect the resort monorails? We have a few early reservations for breakfast at MK and I don't want to be late due to flaky monorail service. Any info about this is greatly appreciated!

We stayed at the contemporary in early June and I was also worried. We didn't have one problem with the monorail! In fact I forgot that it was even an issue! The only long wait we had was after illuminations at Epcot but that is to be expected. We also found out that one of the monorails had two closed cars because of "spilled milkshakes" lol.

From the GF, you have to take the resort monorail to the TTC to get the Epcot monorail. That monorail didn't start running to Epcot until 8:30, which put us in the back of the pack at Epcot by the time we got there for rope drop. I wasn't amused. There was no bus option; I checked.

Can you still walk to the TTC from Poly to grab the Epcot monorail to make rope drop? What about service from Poly to MK to get there before opening? We received a letter from the Polynesian about construction at the resort but I don't believe it referenced monorail issues. I have to dig it up.

We found that to be the case almost every trip. We be waiting for them to get it up and running so we could get to rope drop.

There must be a bus, how else would guest going to 8 a.m. askerhus reservations get there if the monorail doesn't run until 8:30? They can't all take taxis. Even if they make you take a bus from TTC to Epcot.

I'm interested to know about the early bus service to Epcot also, as we have the princess breakfast at 815 one day. Thanks!

PS: we are staying at the poly

We have an 8AM ADR at Akershus as well. Should we consider a cab? I am not fond of being late anywhere we go, and arriving late for a prepark meal would anny the heck out of me.

Last year we stayed at GF and the monorail was on this schedule too and I saw Epcot buses while waiting for AK bus.

Just got back from a trip about a week and a half ago. We didn't stay at a Monorail Resort but I had awful luck with using this monorail. We had a 10 day trip so we had more leisure time. We would spend the early half of the day at one of the parks, take a break and then go back to another park. During some of the breaks we wanted to go to the resorts around MK and do the "Monorail Crawl". We ended up deciding not to do it all in one go so we were going to do one resort a day. The first stop was the Contemporary. We got the monorail right away and made it to the Contemporary in less than 5 minutes. After we were done grabbing a few drinks we went to go to our reservations at EPCOT. We gave ourselves an hour and missed our reservations by a half hour. The monorail was broken down. We kept trying to ask the cast members if we should take a bus, should we walk, is there a boat we can take? For some reason it seemed like they were ignoring everyone. Many people were complaining not only about the broken down monorail but at how the workers were responding. Maybe its because I'm a New Yorker but on the subway if there's an issue with the train there are several announcements where they announce alternatives. We had never been to any of the Monorail Resorts so we didn't know what other options there were aside from the Monorail. We stupidly waited until it worked again and it took its sweet time going to the TTC. We of course missed our dinner reservation and my card was charged 10 dollars per person. I tried calling the restaurant at Tokyo Dining but of course you cant reach the restaurant directly just the Disney Dining Phone Line.

The next time we tried going to one of the resorts we tried going to the Polynesian. Having had sh-tty luck the first time we did some research and found that you cold take a boat. So we hopped on that but right at the GF they stopped service because it looked like it was going to rain. It didn't start raining until about an hour after but I couldn't really fault them in this since the sky was really grey and windy. We debated whether or not we should just walk to the Polynesian but we weren't sure the way and since it also looked like it was about to pour at any minute we didn't want to risk getting caught in a storm. We had enough time so we took a gamble that the monorail would work this time and the other day was just a fluke. NOPE. lol. It took forever to come and it was insanely crowded. It then stood in the station at MK for about 15 and the AC didn't even seem to be on. When it was approaching the Contemporary it would stop for 5 minutes at a time a few times. By the time we got to the Contemporary we realized we still had a few stops and we didn't feel like getting stuck a second longer in a crowded monorail with no AC. Also we had reservations at Be Our Guest and didn't want to risk the Monorail getting stuck again. So we went back to the Contemporary for a drink. We took the walkway this time coming back :)

Sorry if this seems negative. This was just my experience with it. We had no issues at all with the Express Monorail. I would say don't let my post hinder you from using the resort line, just try to research some alternatives routes if you can. If you find that you are waiting any more than 10 minutes I would just try to go for the different route. Hope this helps! pixiedust:

The issues above are just some of why the monorail is in serious need of this refurbishment. It is quite spotty, on a good day.

They have said that if it's not running they will provide buses as a replacement. That doesn't include down time during operating hours but before and after the reduced operating hours. That won't help with breakdowns like PP had (which are frequent, sorry to say). But it will help with an early ADR

Wow, that's crazy. So much for the monorail resorts being easily accessible from the MK.

I am really considering trying to move my magical deal from the Poly to elsewhere. i picked a monorail resort for ease but it seems like it is anything but. I understand refurb, but they also cut out emh so even in working order it won't do me much good.

I wouldn't change resorts. You will always think "what if". The monorail will be fine. We are at the poly August 15 - 23. My mother has a bad knee and I have a 20 month old that needs naps so a monorail resort is a must. This thing will work all the time!

This was the case for us as well during the week when we stayed at the VGF last week; the monorails did not run until 8:30 am... However, they did have buses running for the monorail resorts. The problem we ran into though was that quick monorail to TTC and then to Epcot became a rather long ordeal. My mistake is that in all of my planning I failed to notice the cutbacks on the monorail.

You are correct, they do have buses and we were able to make it to rope drop in time. It took a whole lot longer and we didn't arrive as early as we wanted. For those with 8 am ADR's, they are fine as long as they plan on it taking longer with the buses.

All that put my mind more at ease. I was not so much concerned the monorail didn't work as I was that every morning at 7 I would have to figure out if I should be waiting for a bus, boat or monorail as it seemed from various posts and blogs like no one knew where to go or how to get places. If I have to bus, I want to know so I get out there rather than having a leisurely breakfast thinking I can hop a monorail.

When I booked the Poly all the info said no monorail 11:30-6:00 which was no problem since I rope drop, then I found out rope drop was the issue. At least with the Poly I can walk to TTC if need be.

We are driving to Florida, so we will have our car. If we decide to use our car, will we have to pay for parking in the parks?
