Monorail phobia

I thought there was bus service available from the TTC. Can anyone verify? I thought you could take the ttc to any of the parks?

I would take the boat. Even if there is not an issue, you will probably already feel increased anxiety just lining up for the monorail. Let your family go ahead if the kids like the monorail and just pick a designated place to meet up with them a little while later.
I agree with all the other posters that the monorail does stop for a few minutes all the time. I was just there in November and they had one break down. We were stopped just passed the TTC for a solid 20 minutes - so these things can happen.

Wow.. I can sure relate to this. But for me it's the opposite. I was stuck on Splash Mountain and once I realized I couldn't crawl out if I needed to (I was wedged in with my bag) I had a panic attack.:sad1:

Luckily nobody was around us and my panic attacks are quiet. Terrifying but quiet.
There's something to be said for making yourself do the things you are afraid of. I love Disney and I am not going to avoid rides for the rest of my life.
But it is claustrophobia and it only appears for me in very select situations.
Planes are another one:headache:

So my solution is before I go on a trip my doctor gives me a small prescription for Ativan. I take one for the plane, one for the ride home, and keep one in my bag or pocket for any time I might get stuck. They aren't enough to make me feel too drugged, they just calm me enough to be rational.

Just knowing it is there is enough. It's the only times I ever need them.
So that's one solution.
The other is to take the boat or bus because it's a reasonable alternative for you.
Whatever you decide, I understand. It's worse when rationally we know we're safe but can't stop the physiological response.
I hope this helps a little.

ETA) Another thing that really helps for a situation you aren't prepared for and panic attacks is deep breathing. It can actually slow the physical response and avoid them. I may be stuck with this for some reason but I flatly refuse to avoid things I enjoy. So there are things you can do to make it easier.

in case you have to use the bathroom??

Yep. Again, I have NEVER EVER USED IT but it makes me feel better than the thought of nastily soiling myself because I can't help it, and then having to walk somewhere in total shame and embarrassment once the monorail starts up again to find clean clothes. That thought is part of what makes my stomach even worse in a stuck situation.

NEVER EVER USED IT. I repeat myself. Having this backup plan just makes me feel calmer. And fortunately, my doctor has found a certain prescription that seems to really help as well - I only ride the monorail now when I've taken that prescription and feel 100% sure that I'm good to be stuck somewhere for an hour or more.

Ah, life with stomach issues.

How would you like to be stuck on the monorail for 45 minutes because of a squirrel on the track? Here is the video:

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -
Waiting at Walt Disney World is not uncommon, but recent park guests had to wait longer than usual because of a squirrel.

A video recorded and posted to YouTube on Monday shows a monorail train heading from the Grand Floridian to the Magic Kingdom moving slowly -- starting and stopping -- because a squirrel was on the track and wouldn't jump off.

The video was recorded by a park guest awaiting the train at a nearby station.

"Monorail passengers at Disney World had a 45-minute ride between stops because a squirrel got on the track and the woman driving couldn't bring herself to run it over," the YouTube poster said. " They made progress a few feet at a time, honking at the squirrel to continue further down the track."

The video shows the squirrel finally entering the train station and eventually jumping off the track, bringing a round of applause from the awaiting guests.

We were stopped on the monorail somewhere between MK and the TTC (can't quite remember where, just know that all I could see below was a resort parking lot) and I had a stomach bug. It was a super long 15ish minutes.

Getting stuck on the monorail doesn't scare me, but getting stuck on certain rides sure does. We were stuck on Space Mountain for about 45 minutes and had to be evacuated out (this was at Disneyland) and my friend was FREAKED. And, heaven forbid I get stuck on the uphill climb of EE. I can't even begin to imagine walking down all of those steep stairs. :scared1:

I'm pretty sure the squirrel has monorail phobia.

After reading what people take with them on the monorail, I may never ride again.

Not to be the bearer of bad news-but the boat may not be any better. Just recently we were on a boat that stalled. The CM's were having a hard time getting it started again so we were free floating for over 20 minutes.

Bottom line-nothing is perfect. Even busses break down-that narrow roadway between TTC and MK with the tunnel is not the place I want to be "stuck". (We were after an accident).

Op-go and enjoy your vacation, relax and have fun:flower3:

It usually stops for 5-20 minutes.

But you can be stuck longer! Always pee before you get on the monorail!!

If it'll be an issue, just take the ferry. It's a nice ride. :)

I'm confused; what do people bring on the monorail that is so terrible? I see ativan and bags. Those things are on the monorail every day anyway. ???

warning - this post may gross people out so you might not want to read but it has to do with a topic being discussed in this thread.

If it comes down to someone having an "emergency" situation on the monorail, wouldn't you rather them use a bag then just have an accident out in the open??

I was on the monorail a few years ago and there was a gentlemen on there who got sick and thought he was going to throw up (started gagging and heaving). The monorail hadn't stopped, but he still wasn't going to be able to hold it until he could get to a restroom (he was also in a wheelchair so that would be even harder to quickly get to a bathroom). His wife held a disneyworld shopping bag to his mouth. Thankfully, he didn't actually end up throwing up - but i was glad he had the bag in case it happened!

Sure, none of us want to be on the monorail when this happens, and it is not something we want to think about...but these sort of accidents can happen and can be totally out of the control of the person who is having it. I would rather a person who thinks this is a possibility be prepared to try to contain whatever happens than not be.

I mean how many times have you been at a park and seen vomit being cleaned up on the sidewalk (and that is when the adult or child has a much greater chance of getting to a bathroom or trash can)? Sometimes any sort of bodily fluid emergency can happen so quickly the person doesn't have a chance to have it privately in an appropriate place.

I really do not care for the monorail and lately it seems it stays stuck as much as it runs.

Then this week there was a squirrel on the track and it took 45 mins to get from the Grand Floridian to the Magic Kingdom because of the squirrel.

It is very easy to avoid it, just stay somewhere that is not on the system or take the boats.

So my options are...

1. Smelling the pee/poop

2. Watching someone pee/poop...into a bag AND smelling it

???

I'll take "Ride the Ferry" for $500, Alex.

I don't really get the point of your post. The only point i am making is accidents happen (can happen to children, adults, and old people). Accidents of this nature can happen to people for a variety of medical reasons. Going to the restroom right before getting on one of the forms of transportation doesn't necessarily alleviate the possibility of an accident the the urge for can come on suddenly and without warning. Especially if there is a prolonged stop on said transportation for whatever reason.

Personally, if someone is going to be sick, I would rather someone vomit in a bag than on me, the seat, and/or the floor. The same thing with other bodily fluids. Not saying this happens often at all, but it is a possibility. Btw, it is going to smell a lot worse out then done in a bag and contained. You also will see a lot more of it if not contained.

Why do you think someone can't have the same problem on the ferry (being sick or needing to get to a bathroom without warning)? I have never been on the ferry (have been on the buses, boats, and monorails)- perhaps the ferry has a bathroom? If so, then yes that would be a better choice. If not it is the same possible problem of someone getting sick and not having a bathroom accessible to them immediately which would pose the same problem.

Aww, sometimes people get sick, if the poster feels better bringing a bag, then who cares...someone got sick on the L once while we were stuck - not vomiting, but the other route. It was unpleasant, but no need to make them feel worse.

I felt so bad for them I could have cried.:sad1:

I tend to get panicky on the monorail when it goes over water. It's quick enough that I don't avoid the monorail because of it, but I definitely clam up for those few seconds. I would probably freak out if I was ever on it when it got stuck over water. I'm fine any other time, just not when it is over water. Typing that out it seems pretty silly, since I'd be a gonner if it fell off the track no matter what it is over, but I have a really odd vehicle-falling-into-water fear. I don't do very well driving on bridges over water either...I'm able to do it, but it makes me tense. I actually bought a tool to keep in my car that is made to cut seatbelts and break windows in case my car ever falls in water. I know I'd probably be too frantic (or hurt from the fall) for it to help me, but it does make me feel a tiny bit less tense.

When I worked at MK for the college program I used to take the monorail to the TTC after work every night I worked a Halloween or Christmas party. The perimeter fireworks would block off the path for the CP bus at the CM parking lot, delaying me for several hours, but I figured out quickly that I could catch the CP bus at the TTC instead and avoid the delay. You'd think all that monorail riding over water would have had me used to it, but in those moments I would always think "next time I'll just wait for the regular bus". Of course, "next time" would always come and I'd decide a few seconds of panic was well worth waiting 2 to 3 hours for a bus after a long night of work.

Got stuck on the monorail for the first time last trip. It was hot and crowded and UGH! I was worried about dd's bff. She has nervous stomach issues and is afraid of heights but she was sitting where she couldn't see out very well so that helped her.

I would have normally gotten a bit anxious myself, but I was so tired I was just trying to stay awake.

If it was something I was really anxious about though, I think I would take the ferry and just let dd and dh ride the monorail if they wanted to.
