Monorail Crash: Retire the colors?

Your thoughtfulness and obvious genuine care is beautiful. Honestly, though, I don't see any real reason to retire the colors, despite the tragedy.

Editing to add: be sure to run your spelling and grammar check before sending your letter. I think a letter with no spelling or grammar issues makes a better impact. Again, I do admire your care in this situation.

I agree that changing the colors will make very little difference to the victim's family. I do think that the OP's heart was in the right place, and for that I'd like to give him/her a :thumbsup2

Must have missed the news reports on these ones.
Care to offer some details?

I made a mistake. BTM crashed twice, killing one, injuring 10 the first time, and the other time 4 people were injured. It was a huge deal, and closed for a while. It was far bigger that this one, as it was every where, and it crashed AGAIN like the week that it reopened. I stayed away from it for a while, lol.

The other one is fairly recent. I girl felt weird coming off the ride, feinted, then died. That was sad, but had nothing to do with the ride itself, it was a condition that the ride made worse or something like that.

Here's the BTMRRR accident. It killed ONE and injured 10 in Sept. 2003.

I'm thinking they must be referring to the girl collapsing after riding ToT as I've never heard of an "accident" on that ride.

Wait more digging and I found this from 1998!

Tower Of Terror Vehicle Malfunctions Injuring Seven
An accident on the Tower Of Terror ride at the Disney/MGM Studios in Orlando, Florida resulted in seven riders being sent to local hospitals to be treated for back and neck pains. The accident ocurred during an private party after park hours.
According to reports the ride malfunctioned causing the vehicle to drop in the elevator shaft, before being stopped by an emergency brake. The elevator shaft, one of four used to carry riders up the tower is closed while Disney checks on the problem. The car was carrying 20 passengers when the incident occurred.

I agree the retiring the colors is a nice thought but doubt it will happen.

I don't think riding in the front of any monorail will be an option for quite some time.

Actually, it will probably be safer to ride up front now then it ever has been before. It's kind of like a plane crash, where soon after it happens, they take more precautions than ever to make sure it doesn't happen again. Unfortunately it sometimes takes an accident or tragedy to ensure even greater safety.
So honestly, if I were at Disney right now, and had the option of riding up front, I would do so, and feel about as safe as you possibly can.

To keep this on topic, perhaps the best monument / memorial Disney can make to the victim is a new set of safety standards dedicated in his name.

They didn't change the colors of Primeval Whirl when a cast member got killed from the ride... :confused3

" isn't that the ride that....."

people will move on. Just give it a little time. We will all be riding the monorail again shortly...

Mission Space,....

It is nice of you to think of this but I don't really see the point. The colors didn't cause this as others have said.

In defense of the idea, the National Hurricane Center retires the names of storms that caused mass devestation. Can you imagine if there was another Hurricane Katrina or Andrew? Personally I would not be suprised if Disney did change the colors, as for years anytime someone with knowledge sees it they will think "thats the one in the crash." Disney loves to sweep stuff under the rug, and changing the colors would certainly help do that...

That said, I dont think they should:thumbsup2

Then again ... people have died on rides and Disney doesn't close them. They didn't retire Mission: Space or Thunder Mountain in DL . I can't see them retiring a monorail color because of an accident. It would be putting more emphasis on one incident than the other. Making one death seem more significant.

My guess is that, a year from now, people will ask, "What happened on which monorail? I don't know anything about it!" just like there are people who are constantly "just finding out" about the other accidents that have happened in the past. People are always starting topics like, "Has anyone ever died at WDW?"

But I doubt that anyone walks up to Thunder Mountain at DL these days thinking, "that's the ride that had the crash." The initial shock happens and passes and life goes on.

I really thought more people would agree, just seems like the right thing to do.
But if you don't that's ok, just one persons opinoin.

As for your point, True but your talking about a color of a stripe on a monorail. Not an entire atraction.
It's not like people wait to ride that color because it's different than the rest. No you just get on the next one.

Ultimately Disney will do whatever they want...
Personally I think there's good chance they will change the color
It's simple coat of paint.

I have definitely waited for the pink monorail on a few occasions.

Well, maybe they could just change the shade - make it hot pink instead of the bubble gum pink it is right now.

I must say that I never even noticed the different colors (and I have been to WDW many times). Guess I am not very observant. :lmao:

I say just paint a special mouse ear tribute on the train he cm was on and move on. The colors are part of the trafficing system.. They won't be changed.

The first, and best, way to honor the young man whose life was so tragically cut short in a monorail collision is to figure out what went wrong with the monorail's safety systems and fix them so that this sort of collision never happens again. Disney and the NTSB are currently doing that, so we don't have to worry about it.

The second is to refrain from turning him into an involuntary poster child, martyr, or symbol of some kind without his family's permission. I'd hate to see his death turned into some sort of circus, as that would only bring more pain to his family, friends, and fellow Cast Members who are currently grieving the loss of someone they loved.

Personally, I'd like to see the whole issue evaporate from the boards until the NTSB completes its investigation and releases its findings on the cause of the collision. I'm sure Justin's family, friends, and fellow Cast Members appreciate our many condolences, but they don't need have their loss constantly harped on, publicized, and argued over by a bunch of strangers.

Personally, I just sort of guessed they would retire the colors in the same way that airlines retire the flight numbers of crashed flights. I just figured they would be repainted to new colors after their repair. I don't have strong feelings one way or another, although I know that if the colors stay as is I will always think of what happened when I see/ride pink or purple just as I think of the lightning strike whenever I see or ride black.

FWIW, ValuJet didn't change its name because of the crash. It went bankrupt and was taken over by AirTran.

I agree with you and I predict that Pink and Purple will be repainted with new colors.

Just curious...is there only ONE pink and ONE purple monorail? I always assumed that there were multiple of each color. For that reason, it wouldn't have crossed my mind when I saw the pink monorail that it was the very one that was involved in the crash.

My understanding is that they merged with smaller AirTran, taking the smaller companies name because of the accident and safety problems associated with the ValuJet name.
