It's being reported that both the resort and express monorail will be closing at 11:30 am through 6:00 PM beginning today through approximately the end of March. The closure is due to the construction of the Grand Floridian DVC.

FWIW...I asked a CM about this yeterday while making some reservations...she wanted to know how I knew about the monorail closures given that they had only gotten the details 2 hours prior to my asking. I told her that the DISboards are what its all about. ;)

Anyway, she gave me the dates/times of the closure as posted on here, but she noted that the monorail wouldn't necessarily be closed for the ENTIRE time frame (11:30am-6pm), but as needed during the noted time frame each day. She said she understood that it was a possibility that the monorail would still be utilized during those times, but that there was no way to know in advance what those times would be.

I realize not all the information we get is always 100% accurate, and I know it doesn't help with advanced planning and ADRs, but I figured I'd pass it along.

I would be livid if I booked a monorail resort for this timeframe.

Glad I'm staying at POR then. Wonder what kind of chaos that will create? It's bad enough when the monorail breaks down.

Agreed! We stay at the monorail resorts and pay a serious premium to do so exactly so we can USE the monorail! So much easier with a stroller, especially. I guess people staying at the time will find out how much of an inconvenience it truly turns out to be. We liked going back to the room mid-day. Unless/until they actually extend the walkway from MK to hit all the monorail resorts, we generally take the monorail most times we stay at those resorts to get back and forth. (We take the boat if it happens to be there.)

Good luck, March monorail resort folks. Hopefully it won't be so bad.

Do you think this is a one time only deal, or will the construction cause it to be closed some other time? We are thinking about booking the Poly or CR in July and the only reason is the monorail for my mom and her walker!!!

I was livid when I was staying at the Poly on the first night they cut back on the monorail hours and directed me towards the buses at EPCOT. After voicing my comments, they really didn't seem to care. I picked a monorail resort for the monorail transportation and couldn't use it half the time. It seems to be a problem that is just getting worse as time goes on.

And this is why we refuse to pay the prices of the monorail resorts. We find the monorail overrated...it's always sitting in traffic, breaking down or something. We prefer to have a car and drive to the parks.

I guess it can't be avoided with the construction schedule, but it does make you wonder if they couldn't have planned this for a less busy time.

I agree when the Monorail's do breakdown it is very frustrating and I personally experienced that happening. Plus ever since I started staying at the Boardwalk Inn I honestly don't miss having the Resort Monorail access when I would stay at the Contemporary, because I would hope that nothing goes wrong whenever I got on one.

However in this case at least WDW let everyone staying at the Contemporary/Bay Lake Tower, Polynesian & Grand Floridian in advance of what's going on. This way those guests could change plan ahead or even switch resorts if this becomes to much of a problem for them. While I do feel for those guests that are choosing to stay at those resorts during this time and not switch, at least the Resort Monorail will be up running again and I would take that over it closing because of something un-expected like it breaking down again.

I am LIVID!!! We're paying full price to stay at the Grand Floridian in 3 weeks. Staying for 12 nights. We have young kids and the whole point of this extravagance was the monorail. My DH is going to hit the roof!!!

Call and see whether there's any way they can get you something at the contemporary (walk to the MK at least) or one of the Epcot resorts.

If your not booked with a discount I think it would be pretty easy to switch resorts. The epcot resorts are pretty nice.

We're already paid in full, so I don't want to pay a penalty on top of all of this. Thanks for the suggestion, though. We've stayed at the BC, but wanted a monorail resort this time.

We'll be at BLT 3/22-3/26 so this may completely affect us. That said, we plan on spending at least two of those days at MK so no big deal there (we always walk there from BLT) and we have ADRs at Cali Grill, Artist's Point & Kona. So it may affect our Kona reservation, but we'll survive. Frankly I think it's better to have the advance notice because then at least you know the park is planning for the added buses and boats, whereas when the monorail suddenly goes down you can get completely mobbed in that line with no way out. That said, I'm a little bummed I won't be able to watch the monorail whoosh by the hotel all day!

The penalty is typically only $50 ~ and it's doubtful that they would penalize you given the situation. You'd probably end up getting money back by switching to an Epcot resort...instead of just being angry about. :confused3

Good point...I think I'll sleep on it. Thanks.:)
