Money...Ugh!

Does mil know that you have been saving money for a car? If not, she may not take it well that you can go out and buy a new car (even a modest one), yet could not pay dd's tuition.

So, if she stops paying for dd's tuition due to this, can you cover the tuition?

I would talk to MIL and be honest with her. As for buying used, I haven't had a new car in years.....all of our "new" cars have been used, previous year models, previous daily rentals with lower miles. And they've lasted great so far.
