Okay, this is kind of dirty, but my FIL does it all the time.

He makes a cheap reservation for an offsite car rental place. Then when he gets there, he goes up to the counter of an on-site place with a printout of his reservation confirmation from the cheaper offsite place. He then asks if they can match it. He says they always have.

I am sure there are times when it won't work or they don't have inventory, but it is worth a try if you don't want to take the shuttle.

How many times has he done this and at what time of the day? Two or three times at slow times of the day may can be attributed to luck or friendly/bored counter agents. If, however, he's done it 8 to 10 times or more at various times of the day he may be on to something!!

He says he has done it 6 times over the past year. I have yet to try it.

I have actually seen this suggested in some travel magazines. Personally I think it is too much work to hike around standing in line to deal with these people. There is nothing wrong with doing it however. It is up to the agents to determine if they want to meet the deal.

If you were going to do it, I would suggest checking on line first to see if cars are available. If the place is sold out (I had a horrible time one President's day weekend!) then this won't work!

I did something like that in April. I had reservations at both Alamo and L&M. The cost for each was about the same but with Alamo I had a second driver free (not spouse). I really preferred to rent from L&M because they didn't have a line but Alamo did. So I presented L&M with the printout from Alamo and asked if they would also give me the second driver free. No problem, they did.
