1. If you are going 20 mph slower than EVERYONE else on the highway, you are effectively and OBSTRUCTION since everyone has to go around you. You are presenting a danger on the highway. Get up to speed. Or at least move to the right hand lane.

2. There is only one designated smoking area on the property. This is the only place you are permitted to smoke on property. Do not get our of your car and walk through he parking garage, or even more heinous, walk through the stairwell smoking your cigarette. I do not want to take in your wake of smoke. Yuck.

For the record, I do not drive slowly on the freeway BUT I hate people who drive 10-15 mph OVER the speed limit. It's called a 'limit' because that's the fastest speed you are supposed to go. It's not a mandate for going that speed or faster, ya know?

On the smoking thing, ITA. Smoke your brains out if ya want but stay far away from me. I have children get on the bus every day reeking of cigarette smoke. It's from their parents cigarettes. Why would people subject their child to the smoke and worse or just as bad-they are making their children stink.

Does 20MPH slower mean that everyone was going above the posted speed limit and this driver was obeying the limit? Or does it mean that this driver was going 20MPH below the speed limit

If it was the later than I agree that 20MPH below the posted speed limit is a danger to others. If it was the former than that driver did nothing wrong and those going above the posted speed limit were in the wrong.

This bothers me too. I think the two left lanes should be at least going with the flow of traffic. If you're holding people up you should move right.

I agree - although many seem to feel that the "limit" is just a rough guideline - and then complain when they get a ticket..:confused3

I know on some of the interstates here they have a "minimum" - which is 15 to 20MPH below the speed limit - so if a driver were to drive at the minimum, there's no "valid" complaint..

If he was not in the far right lane he was most definitely doing something wrong regardless of the circumstances.

For people who have been driving for any length of time, that's a given - and they know it - however, the OP didn't include that piece of info so we don't know what the circumstances are.. Could have been an interstate; city street; two-lane highway; country road; etc..

So, let me see if I understand this. A driver traveling AT the speed limit is wrong to be in any other lane except the far right, while every driver going or trying to go twenty miles above the posted speed limit is doing the right thing?

Speed limit is 65 mph. Most are going aroun 70 mph. The slow folks are going around 50 mph. And they were in the left center lane of a 4 lane highway.

No, I'll explain. If we're talking about an interstate the law is keep right unless you are passing. If someone is speeding there are other laws for that.

Or..... when they have signs for at least a mile saying 95 n right 2 lanes 95 s left 2 lanes, and they wait til the last possible moment to move over, but can't because people were in the correct lanes so they have to almost stop so they cut someone off to get in the correct lane....

What if the interstate splits and you need to go left? I've been on many interstates/highways that split and needed to go left.

This morning I had a driver in front of me turning left. The road was very wide and had plenty of room for him to turn and me(along with everybody else in the 8:00am traffic) to proceed on the right hand side. Most places this would be 2 lanes, but here it is one humongous lane about two and a half vehicle widths before you hit the curb.

He/She puts on their turn signal, then like they are driving a fully loaded 18 wheeler drift far right, so far right I had to drive up on the curb to get around them...I am lucky to drive a Nissan Frontier 4wd...:) Anyway I gave them a honk of my horn to let them know they aren't the only person on the road this day, and they childishly honk back at me, while pointed in a totally different direction......

This reminds me, Canada's Worst Driver is on tonight :)

Well of course. It's really all about maintaining traffic flow. So many backups could be eliminated if people just practiced lane discipline. I've done a LOT of highway driving.

I'm also a daytime policeman. Expecting twins. Boys. Maybe.

Technically, in NJ, our rule states that nobody is supposed to be in the center and left lanes unless passing.
39:4-88. Traffic on marked lanes
When a roadway has been divided into clearly marked lanes for traffic, drivers of vehicles shall obey the following regulations:

a. A vehicle shall normally be driven in the lane nearest the right-hand edge or curb of the roadway when that lane is available for travel, except when overtaking another vehicle or in preparation for a left turn.

c. Upon a highway which is divided into 3 lanes, a vehicle shall not be driven in the center lane except when overtaking or passing another vehicle or in preparation for a left turn or unless the center lane is at the time allocated for traffic moving in the direction the vehicle is proceeding and is signposted to give notice of that allocation.

Signs on the Parkway and Turnpike state "Keep Right Except to Pass" although we interpret that here in NJ to mean, "drive wherever you feel like it"

Yeah, I drive through Tennessee and Kentucky several times a year and they totally wasted their money on those signs!

I could not agree with you more. Some of these people are just unaware but others are doing to make a point about the posted speed limit.

A funny story. It was a Friday morning in the summer. We were on the Mass Turnpike and my wife was driving 70 in the left lane (posted speed 65). Traffic was light. A State Trooper pulled us over and told my wife that she was driving too slowly to be in the left lane. I kid you not!

Sorry about that, but I sure wish they would do that more often!

They don't need to get in the left lane 20 miles before the split though.

If you have a line of cars behind you and no one in front of you that should be a pretty good indicator that you are holding up traffic. If you want to drive slower than everyone else, get in the right lane. Oh, and around here on a multi-lane highway the CENTER lane is the driving lane, the right lane is the entrance/exit lane and the left lane is the passing lane.

The ones that drive me nuts are the guys that pull into the left lane and go the same speed as the car in the right lane next to them so no one can get around them.
