Moms to Be Part 3

Hi All,

Caramia Jo arrived last Wednesday, July 1st. She was 7 lbs, 13 oz and 20 in long.

My scheduled c-section went as planned, but nothing after that did. I got to hold her briefly after birth while they were sewing me up. Then my husband took her to the nursery and the issues started. She had a very high respiratory rate, so she was taken to the special care nursery (NICU) and placed under an oxygen hood that went over her entire head. She was x-rayed and fluid was found throughout her lungs and there was one spot in particular that looked like it could be pnuemonia. So she was placed on antibiotics as well. I didn't see her again until later that evening (she was born at 8:40 am). The oxygen dome produces so much condensation though that you couldn't even see her face. You could see her chest though and she had very labored breathing. The second day under the dome I could not stimulate her at all - I could place my hand on her arm or leg but no stroking her at all or talking to her. That was so hard! Finally the 3rd day, July 4th, I was able to hold her for the first time since her birth because she was taken off the dome and a nasal cannula (oxygen tube in the nose) was placed on her. I was also able to breastfeed at that point and she latched on great. Up until then she was fed my pumped breast milk through a feeding tube.

Anyway, she was weaned off the oxygen a couple days later and then we only had to get through the 7 day antibiotic treatment. She was finally discharged yesterday and we are home now. It has been a long week, but she is healthy and happy and we are so relieved.

I will try to post some pictures later, once I figure out how to do it.

Hope all is well with all of you. I have a lot of catching up to do.

Congratulations!

That must have been so scary in the beginning but I am very glad to hear she is doing so well now :goodvibes Can't wait to see some pictures of your little one!

Welcome Hulagirl and congrats on your 1st baby! I am on my 3rd kid and still have questions, so definitely ask away!

Gator Mickey - Congrats on the birth of your little girl! Sorry to hear about the NICU issues. My nephew had a similar birth experience and it was terrifying for all of us, but I can only imagine when it's your own child. I hope all is well now. It's great that she's nursing so well already, that must be a big relief. And I'm sure you're thrilled to have her home with the rest of the family.

Gotta get my kids ready for bed soon. My husband's overnight at work yet again so it's gonna be a punctual bedtime cause I need rest.

Today was my 37 week check up. I'm only up another lb. (yay!), but I have no idea if I've made any other progress because the nurse told my Dr. "not to bother" checking me because she found the baby's heartrate way up high and doesn't think she's dropped enough for me to have made any progress. She was probably right, and it's not like I LOVE being checked, but I have to wait another week to find out anything now. This is the first time in 5 kids with this Dr. that he hasn't checked every week of the last four. (I know, I know-there are people with REAL problems out there. As I said, I'm whining)

Also, one of my few close friends from church emailed to tell me that I probably wouldn't be seeing too many women from our local congregation at my baby shower (which I didn't know for sure I was having until last week) because there is one for someone else's 17 year-old niece that day. I used to be the advisor to the teenaged girls at church and the last time I saw that 15 year-old, she told us we could all "go f*#& ourselves" as far as she was concerned then dropped off the face of the earth and broke her aunt's heart by running away from home. Needless to say, she is back now. My sister had two kids by the time she was 18, so I am NOT judgemental when it comes to teenaged mothers. However, I do get annoyed by people looking for handouts and taking advantage of people with big hearts. Of course, she may not be doing any of that. I haven't seen her in two years and a lot can happen between 15 and 17...obviously. I think I'm just going to miss having my one good friend from church at my shower.

And I guess someone having their 5th baby really has no business having a shower at all, and I didn't expect one. This was a surprise until they realized I might make other plans. I did get rid of EVERYTHING as my youngest outgrew it (clothes, toys, etc...), but all this shower is for is diapers and who doesn't need those? Anyway, I'm just feeling grouchy tonight and thought I would vent here instead of on my blog or Facebook where it is too easily found by people from church.

Melessa - The shower thing really stinks. Who thought having it the same day as yours was a good idea? And I know what you mean about people like the teen you mentioned. I was young when I had my 1st and she was unplanned, but we did what we had to to survive and raise her and move on with life. My cousin who is a year younger than me had a baby the same time as my daughter, couldn't support it at all and sat home and let her parents take care of her and the kid. Then she moved in with man after man and now is pregnant with #2, once again back with her parents, and will be unemployed when this baby comes because she can't put the baby in daycare. It's the sense of entitlement she has, at the expense of her kids, that is just insane. Oh, and the kicker is she has not told her parents about #2 yet, but is posting it all over facebook, including ultrasound photos. She finds out the gender on Monday so she's obviously about halfway through and the people who will be paying for this kid don't even know she's pregnant yet! Ugh, some people.

Regarding the internals, my OB never does them if that makes you feel any better. He doesn't see any benefit regarding how dilated you are and when you go into labor so no internals with him. At first I was annoyed as I wanted to know if I was getting close, but I saw his point when he missed my 37 week appt and a resident saw me, said I was 1cm and had a while to go, then my daughter was born 3 days later. So who knows, maybe even if you haven't made progress yet your induction will go better than you expect!

I was feeling okay most of the night and now that I'm taking my vitamin I am sick. I'm afraid to take them in the morning cause I think I might be sick from them, but vomiting after I take them every night can't be very beneficial either....

You are SO nice to say sweet things to me when you are up feeling sick. I have been sick about 20-22 weeks with each one of my babies and dealt with vitamins on a day-to-day basis. I tried to take them every day, but some days I just couldn't. I wish I had better advice than that. But morning sickness remains my LEAST favorite thing about pregnancy, labor, and delivery even on my 5th child.

As far as the girl goes, I HOPE she has changed from who she was two years ago. I really do. But I worked pretty closely with her and she was horrible and ungrateful to everyone around her all. the. time. I was worried when she ran away, but have to admit I was a little relieved when they found her living safely with her dad (who has apparently kicked her out now, bringing her back here to live). She was the worst to her aunt who is also raising her three small grandchildren because her daughter abandons each one within a few months of birth. Dealing with three little ones (5, 2, and 1) is more than a grandma needs to be doing, so let's add a pregnant teenage niece to the mix.

Anyway, thanks for your reply. I hope you feel better and get some SLEEP tonight.

And you are right about the checking not being necessary. I'm just completely uncomfortable right now and wish I could see a finish line. I can't wait to meet my baby, and I'm going to have to anyway.

Melessa G - Whine away, this is a safe place. Sorry you didn't get checked like you wanted to - silly nurse, I'd be mad at her too if I had my heart set on it. But like bolt fans said it won't help or hurt, so hopefully you'll hear what you want next week :goodvibes

I had pretty horrible all-day sickness. Anyhow, the only way I would get my vitamins down was to get to bed and I would be on the verge of falling asleep and DH would wake me, hand me a glass of water and the vitamins. I'd take them and roll over and keep sleeping. That helped me not to throw up all the time after taking them. I read your DH works some nights so that won't work all the time - but maybe if you just have them in the bathroom with a glass of water and then when you go for your first evening pee you can take them and get to bed ASAP.

Has anyone read/tried BabyWise?

I have heard great things about it! I am going to go get it tomorrow!

I've read about 1/2 of it. Definitely has some good ideas, though I think it is kind of unrealistic for certain things. I think it is useful as a general guide.

I wish I would have read it before the baby came- not much time for reading now!

Melessa - If I'm up and sick anyway, might as well be on here! I should add, I totally get wanting to be checked, as I was pretty disappointed when my dr told me he doesn't do the internals. Not that anyone wants an internal exam, but you do want to know if there's any hope in sight. I know the dilation doesn't mean anything, but I think it's a mental thing foe pregnant moms. Like I am dying to get to my first ob appt even though I know nothing is going to happen besides the dr basically saying "Ok, you're pregnant, likely with another large baby we'll have to keep an eye on and hope you don't deliver preterm again." It just sorta marks a milestone in the long journey, and I think internals have the same effect.

IHeartTink - I had the BabyWise book, my MIL bought it for me with my 1st kid, which was odd as I don't think she believes in any of Ezzo's principles, but then again, she probably never read the book, just saw "baby" on the cover and bought it. I did read it, but there was no way to implement any of the strategies with my 1st as she was a very high maintenence baby. The one thing I did use from the book was that I'd try to keep her up about 30 minutes after a feeding before putting her in her bed, and that did seem to work as far as helping her sleep longer than if she went to sleep immediately after eating.

If I had tried to feed her on a schedule we both would have been crying. Actually, I did try, and we were both crying. She definitely needed to eat, and consequently sleep, on her own timeline, and my attempts to regulate that were not well met.

I'd say to read the book and just plan to apply the techniques loosely based on your baby, not so much trying to adapt your kid to the book if that makes sense. I know a couple of people who followed the book religiously and their babies did sleep all night from really early on, but I think that might have been the case either way. I did nothing differently with my son than I did with my daughter and he was sleeping from 6am-6pm by 7 weeks old and my daughter didn't do that till she was 2.5yo!

Thanks everyone for the vitamin tips. I take Citranatal or something like that and have since my 1st kid, but they have this nasty vanilla scent. Thing is, when I'm not pregnant they smell really good, but as soon as that baby is conceived the smell is nauseating. And now they come with a DHA capsule so I have 2 things to take which doesn't make it much easier. And of course, I get progressively sicker as the day goes on, so by the time I'm ready for bed, I'm also sick and not in the mood for the vitamins, but I force myself to take them most nights, then end up throwing up before bed, so I am sure I don't get much out of the vitamins. I did take a sour gummy flinstone vitamin a few times, and those didn't make me sick, but I did notice they have vitamin A in them and my prenatals don't. I know that can act as a teratogen so I'm thinking I should avoid them. I think I'll try taking them immediately before I fall asleep tonight and see how I do.

BTW, those of you who were sick longer than I was with my others (which was 18 weeks) are freaking me out. We are going on a Disney cruise with friends on August 29th and I'll be 17 weeks, I think, and was so hoping I'd be at the very end of the morning sickness by then. But the sickness started earlier this time and I keep meeting people who were sick past 20 weeks and I am not feeling so great about this trip. I wouldn't even care that much if it were just our family, but I will feel badly if I end up ruining the other family's trip too.

I need to pack our stuff for Sesame Place. I'm not really looking forward to this trip, and my daughter does not want to leave camp early cause there's a magic show this afternoon so we'll get to hit traffic on the way which will not be enjoyable for me. And then watching my family do water slides while I bake in the sun is also not very appealing at the moment.

By the last few weeks, the sickness had eased, it was just still present which annoyed me because all my books said it should be gone. And I'm thinking if you started earlier, maybe you will end earlier? There's just nothing about pregnancy that is an exact science, is there?

Hi All,

Caramia Jo arrived last Wednesday, July 1st. She was 7 lbs, 13 oz and 20 in long.

Hope all is well with all of you. I have a lot of catching up to do.

Congrats!! :banana::banana:

At first I was annoyed as I wanted to know if I was getting close, but I saw his point when he missed my 37 week appt and a resident saw me, said I was 1cm and had a while to go, then my daughter was born 3 days later. Oh! That makes me feel better. I hadn't progressed at my last check up at all and I really don't want to worry about the induction without any progress...

I was taking citranatal too. I took it for 3 months before the pregnancy with no issues at all and then I was really sick until about week 14 when I gave up on the citranatal and switched to FLintstones. It was night and day better right away. My dr told me the flintstones are nearly the same thing as all other prenatals-its just the formula and additives are gentler. I don't think the regular chewables have very much, if any, vitamin A...

Has anyone read/tried BabyWise?

No, but I've read a couple of places that do NOT recommend it, and I don't agree with most of the author's philosophy. Boltfans gave you better advice than I could on the subject.

I'm reading Dr. Sears Baby Book now and I feel more comfortable with it, but I'll definitely end up somewhere in the middle of the 2 philosophies.

Books like Baby 411 and Bringing Home Your Newborn are better for presenting great basic info without getting preachy or judgemental.

I just wanted to say that everytime I bring up this book on one of my pregnancy forums.... I get the "OMG HOW COULD YOU..." type of response. So let me just warn you-- you're walking on thin ice with this question..lol... been there-- done that!

I must say ive read about half and really like it. Some people don't like the author... some do. I know a lot of people who swear by it... and have encountered many Attachment Parenting mothers who are completely against it 100% (websites out there to prove it). Personally-- im going to take all the knowledge from books I can get and see what works for me. Its been a good easy read... and seems pretty logical on some things (Sleep, Feed, Wake). I think it gets more controversial when it comes to when to feed. It's worth reading, IMO. I haven't finished it (should do that today)... let me know what you think about it.

I will add that prior to my 1st kid, attachment parenting was not at all on my radar. The idea of my kid sleeping in my bed was not welcome. Then my daughter turned 4 months old, stopped sleeping at night and putting her in our bed was the only thing that worked. We own a lot of the Dr. Sears books and I think they have a lot of merit, which I probably would not have agreed with prior to my daughter.

I think the big problem with schedules is that babies, for the most part, don't follow them. They have no idea what you're trying to do. My son, who I mentioned was and still is an excellent sleeper, had a very bizarre feeding pattern that took me a bit to learn. But once i figured it out, we were both happy. He'd wake up at 6am, nurse, then feed probably every 1.5-3 hours throughout the day. Till about 4pm. From 4-6pm he nursed practically nonstop. I didn't believe he was truly hungry at first, cause he had been nursing so much, so I'd try a pacifier, swing, walking him, whatever. He just cried. So I finally thought I'd just go ahead and try nursing him more during that period and he pretty much nursed for 2 hours (with maybe 10 minutes in between each 20 minute session), but then he'd sleep 12 hours. I know that if I tried to mess with that period of cluster feeds that he would not have slept like that, despite any schedule I tried to enforce.

Oh, and while my daughter slept in our bed from 4 months to nearly 2.5yo, my son slept in his own bed from birth and HATED sleeping in our bed. Now at 2yo and 5yo, my daughter would rather die than sleep with us and my son would gladly crawl into our bed if given the opportunity.

Another book I liked a lot was the No Cry Sleep Solution by Elizabeth Pantley. Though my daughter did not become a good sleeper till she was 2.5yo, this book did get us closer than anything else and was a really gentle approach. It supports cosleeping, but it's not a requirement for the techniques or anything.

Harleyquinn - Thanks for the info on the vitamins, I feel a lot better about the Flinstones now. I bought the sour gummies cause sweet foods make me even more nauseous right now, but my kids eat the regular Flinstones so I'll compare the vitamin A and see if it's less in the chewables than the gummies. My kids love vitamins so I'm afraid to buy them gummy anything!

And yes, I went into spontaneous labor at 1 day before 38 weeks, when I was only 1cm and not effaced at all 3 days earlier. With my son I have no idea where I was as I was never checked with him. But the 1st time, I thought "oh gosh, I have weeks to go!" when she said I was only 1cm, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Thanks for all of your responses to the Baby Wise book!

I am so ignorant sometimes and I didn't realize that this book had controversial issues. I had a couple of friends said they liked it and their babies were sleeping through the night, I just assumed that it was a helpful guide.

Then I googled it and saw lots of bad things about it after I posted the question to you all on here and I was like "uh-oh!!!"

I will probably still buy it and read it in my downtime on my Disney trip and I will let you all know what I think!

I just thought I would throw out that this book is very popular on my twins board. VERY. I havent read it so I cant tell you what I think... But most everyone on my twin boards had babies sleeping through the night by about 6 weeks...

Well I had my first internal today and I wasn't expecting anything but it turns out I am 2 cm dilated and 30% effaced. In my doctor's words..."looks like we may have a July baby on our hands!" :scared1:

As soon as she told me I am 2 cm I was a little freaked...my cousin that just had her baby in May was told she was 2 cm at 37 weeks and 2 days later she went into labor. Looks like Jake may be here sooner than I thought! Then again, it could still be a few more weeks till he decides to make an appearance. Guess the waiting game has officially started!

Congrats Veronica!!

omg, you and Sarah and are sooooo close!

[now back to my lurking..]

had a vivid, hilarious dream last night. Dreamed we had a little girl, who although she looked like about six months old, she talked like a two year old! Her name was Mia, and she had two piggy tails on top of her head. My SIL's were babysitting, and they let her smoosh Tootsie Rolls into the carpet. Why? Because it was fun! I distinctly remember little Mia saying "I'm cuter today than yesterday!" I kept repeating that in my head all day today and laughing!!

DH called me from overseas yesterday to tell me he had a dream that we had a little girl named Molly! Hmmm, hopefully a girl is on our radar!

I know! And of course, now that I know I've started dilating I am even more anxious than before. I hope he comes sooner than August 2nd. I am ready for this kid to be here already :lmao:
