DD wants to dye the ends of her hair hot pink for the summer. I’m fine with this because she is using her own money, and she plans to have the dyed ends cut off before school starts in the fall. The dress code prohibits un-natural hair colors.

At any rate, I did some research on the process and found out that bright dyes and chlorine (i.e. swimming pools) can lead to undesirable results. Fading and color changes. Of course, I informed DD of this and then asked if she wanted to still proceed and this is what I got.

“I don’t know, mom!” (in a frustrated and angry tone). “You always have to research things, and then tell me all the things that might happen, and then I don’t want to do them anymore!”

In other words, I’m raining on her parade. Oh well, guess I’ll just have to be the bad guy.

I'd let her do it and let her live with whatever happens. That's one parade I wouldn't rain on. Good luck.

Unfortunately for dd you are right. Last year my dd8 died hot pink streaks throughout ther medium brown hair and for the first month they were awesome, bright no fading etc. As soon as June hit and she started swimming they totally faded into just blond streaks within a month. Lucky for her the blond streaks looked awesome and ultimately she wanted her whole head blonde (that didn't happen LOL), but let her know most likely it will not be pink for very long.

LOL- my daughter had the bottom 6 inches of her hair dyed blue when she was in 5th grade- they had no rules for grade schools- they can't dye their hair unnatural colors in Jr high but then in the high school they can so only the Jr High has the rule LOL. When she went in pools it would turn a green color instead of the dark blue but she was ok with bright green too LOL.

I feel your pain! I do like the pink way better than the feathers my dd's friends are putting in their hair this year. Repeat after me..It's just hair! :lmao:

I keep reminding myself of that, everytime mine wants to do something different to her hair.:thumbsup2

Good job, mom! You did exactly the right thing. You not only helped her make the right decision on her own, but you taught her a valuable lesson about looking before leaping!

A couple of my daughters' friends got colored streaky extentions put into their hair. I have no idea what the process was but one of them is on a swim team, and I have not noticed her extensions changing colors. Maybe that would be a good compromise.

She has now informed me that she wants to do the feather thing. Her friend's dad is a hair stylist and he does this.

I just researched that as well, and may be a good alternative. Seems strange to me, but it's her money and her hair. As long as she meets the dress code requirements in the fall, I'm okay.

I'm still fine with her dyeing her hair. She just thinks I'm a party pooper for telling her the possible results.

What's the feather thing? Real feathers or "feathering" a la Farrah Fawcett in the 70's???

YOU! ALWAYS RESEARCHING THINGS! DON'T YOU KNOW YOU'RE RUINING HER LIFE?! :rotfl:

As others have said "it's just hair". My dd dyed her ends purple. First they have to bleach it and then dye it. It is better to just do the ends than the whole head because the dye wears off quickly especially if in the pool and you are left with bleached ends which my dd thought was cool. I say you have told her what will happen and she can make an educated ecision as to whether or not she wants to deal with the aftermath. My dd decided she did and is now deciding what to do with it at the end of the summer. Told her I'm not paying for anything for the summer. She will likely cut off the ends before school starts and do something else. No problems with their school as far as I know.

Just hair; just hair; just hair;)

When my youngest was in grade school, friend of his had the pink pieces wove in. This was a school sponsored event, for Komen or breast cancer awareness. When they showed up for school the next day after having this done (it was a brother and sister, 4th & 3rd grade at the time), they were sent home with a note saying it was against the code... :headache:

i have a blue streak in my hair. my hair is naturally dark brown, so my stylist bleaches it first. even without being in the pool, it fades into turquoise and then green (and then blonde) if i don't regularly re-color it.

so, even if she isn't in the pool, the color is going to fade. :) but you can easily buy stuff to put on it to pop the color again.

last year, i let DD put colored extensions in her hair so that they wouldn't fade. her grandma managed to yank one out within a week (she even left a bald spot). :(

My DD likes to put hot pink streaks in her hair and, chlorine or not, it does fade over time. Her hair is so dark that it goes from pink to an bronze-orange color. It doesn't look bad, but I do prefer her natural dark brown.

One alternative, aside from the feathers, is to let her get a few colored extensions. They do not fade, but are 100% human hair and look very natural. Several of the stylists and my salon have them and they look great. I even considered getting a few purple strands myself, but I don't want to deal with DH's reaction.
