I am one of the buyers for our office's sponsored family for this Christmas.

I get to buy the kids' bikes.

What size bike do I buy for:

Female, aged 7

and Female, aged 6

???

What is popular these days? We have enough money raised to buy them, but anything I get on sale would allow me to buy them more needed stuff like clothes.

We decided to buy them one fun gift, and they both had bikes on their lists.

I am near Walmart and Target.

Thanks in advance! I just don't want to buy the wrong size (or not even be close!)

My 6 year olds have 16 inch, my almost 8 year old a 20 inch. Make sure to buy helmets!

It depends also on how big the 6 year old is. If she is on the tall side, a 20 inch would last a lot longer than a 16. Wal-mart is usually a pretty inexpensive place to find bikes.

A 20-inch would probably be good for both at their ages. I think we bought DD's 16-inch bike when she was about 5 and she may have had it for a year or two before we got the next size.

Are you buying bikes with training wheels? I agree with adding the helmets to the gift.

Another place that you may want to try for deals is www.fogdog.com I bought DS's Schwinn chopper bike there a few years ago and it is still going strong and I think I paid way less than you could anywhere around here.

I agree, I would get 20" for both-they will be able to ride them longer.

Hmm - my 6 year olds have been without training wheels for a couple of years, and I think the 20" would be too much, but if they're asking for bikes, there is probably a good chance that they need them. A 6 year old could ride a 20" with the wheels, but I do think it's hard for a 6 year old to learn to ride without training wheels on a 20" bike (my kids learned on a 12" when they were 3/4/5).

20" for the 7yr

16" for the 6yr

You never know with kids......the oldest might want a smaller bike and the youngest a larger......so they can switch if they want.

Walmart has real nice bikes for reasonable prices.

For nostalgia sake, I am a fan of the Mongoose brand bikes at Walmart. They have boy and girl styles too.....

I would say 20" for both. Both of my kids got 20" when they were 5. I did find some that sat a little lower to the ground (schwinn's from walmart).

Sometimes I think it's almost easier for a kid to learn on a bigger bike. The wheel rotation goes further on one pedal and they can work on balancing, rather than on a little one where their concentrating on peddling to their hearts content and trying to balance. If that makes sense.;)

They do make 18" bikes now also. That's what we got DD7 this year. The
20" were just too big for her and I didn't feel safe with her riding it.
