Mom & 4 children 10 and Under!!

When you said that your nerves were shot when waiting for the table with screaming kids, it was so good to hear that. I now know that it is not just me. I have 3 boys (yes all boys, 8, 4, and 18 months) and my nerves are pretty much shot all the time. Ha. Just kidding but my nerves have been shot quit a bit. But all in all, I am loving your report and see that I could take my boys to WDW all by myself one day. I hope to take the older 2 DS and leave the baby at home with DH so I can ride the rides. I can't wait to hear how the plane ride home went. I am loving the story, and I am so glad your family had a great time at the most Magical Place on Earth!!!

Part VI Christmas Eve 2006….ME & the trip home

We headed toward the ME bus stop about 20 minutes before it was supposed to leave. The slip from ME said to get there 15 minutes prior but I was ready to get going. I couldn’t find our vouchers so just kept the slip out….(I still haven’t found the vouchers)…..around 11a a ME bus showed up but the driver just sat there for about 10 minutes. Then another ME bus came along and dropped off people. After this bus left, the first ME bus backed up and picked us up along with another family. As we pulled away, I was thinking…we’re leaving….oh…then it flashed across my mind that I’d forgotten my cell phone charge….so much for the weepy feeling. We pulled away at 11:15 right on target. Our flight was at 2:00p.

Then we went to Pop Century to pick up more families….OMG…there were about 10 groups waiting to be picked up. One family there was supposed to go on a later ME bus and they weren’t able to accommodate them (our bus was full). We were supposed to pull off at 11:25…..but…it’s 11:30a; then 11:40…and then finally 11:50 before we leave. Apparently there was a problem with a wheel chair that wasn’t noted on the ME voucher or something.

I was afraid that we were going to be late. DD2 had fallen asleep and DD1 was holding her in the seats in front of us. DS1 was across watching TV…..DS2 was nursing trying to sleep…..we finally made it to MCO….at 12:30…..our driver dropped us off at Terminal A…..several people were trying to help us (pulling the 3 roll on suitcases, double stroller, & carry-on bags) but I knew that DS1 had to use the bathroom so I told them to go on ahead. Then everyone decided they had to go….we were really getting behind….

I couldn’t remember where SWA was but did remember that it was in the opposite terminal from which we landed. So at almost 1p (yes, it took almost 20 minutes for 4 people to use the bathroom…ugh) we headed to Terminal B…..I was pushing the stroller like a mad woman….pulling 2 suitcases stacked on top of each other….DD1 was struggling to keep up while pulling her suitcase….DS1 had the carry on bags…..he could barely keep up…..we get to terminal B and I can’ t find the SWA information so I ask a TSA “Where is SWA??” I must have looked crazed.:scared1:

He replies: “TERMINAL A!!!!!!!”

We run back across the airport back to Terminal A….and finally, at 1:20p finish checking our luggage and go to security. Thankfully we get through without any problems (DS1 didn’t think he should have to take off his shoes (and told this to the TSA) because they were “crocs”). We made it to our gate and were the first in the pre-board line….. it was 1:40p. Where were the gate agents? I walk around and see that my freak out wasn’t necessary as our flight was at 2:40p.

It wasn’t crowded near our gate so DD2 & DS2 were able to walk around (and scoot around) and get rid of some energy before the flight. When it was time to board, we were first….I took the 3 bulkhead seats to the left and DD1 & DS1 sat behind me. I installed the CARES belts and put DD2 in one and held DS2 while the plane was being boarded.

VENT: I am so ticked off because of all the comments I heard from people boarding….oh, babies…..how’d they get the front seats ….oh, they must have pre-boarded (this from someone who boarded, uh, at least 50th)…..and the general comments “great”, “just my luck”, etc. GUESS WHAT???? We were all babies once…..get over it. (Vent over, I think). Oh, I could have let my other 2 children take the other bulkhead seats but I DIDN’T!

Meanwhile, DS2, who had been nursing and was almost asleep must have some sort of radar, bc the flight attendant was eating Ben & Jerry’s ….he spied her cup through his slit eyelids…popped up and immediately started to call for some….she didn’t realize what was going on…that he could see her….he wasn’t crying…he was just really excited because he thought we was going to get Phish Food!

She came over to our seats when she noticed DD2 in the CARES system. Apparently she’d never seen one before and thought it was a great idea….I told her I’d read about it on the SWA site. She mentioned that she wished more parents would use them.

CARES Harness System

We took off…the flight was uneventful….there was some turbulence….I kept telling myself…they’re just bumps on the road….DS1 fell asleep immediately….DD1 read her book….DD2 talked the entire time….and DS2? Well, I tried to put him in the CARES system but he resisted so I held him the entire flight…not only did I hold him…but I had to NURSE him the entire flight because every time I tried to disengage him, he would wail….everyone on flight 1881 owes me big time whether you know it or not!;)

When we arrived back home, my dad was waiting for us….it was Christmas Eve and the kids were really excited to be back. All of our luggage made it back…albeit wet…and we headed out. We were home.

Next: Random thoughts & what I would do differently next time….

I've really enjoyed your report and am anxious to hear your closing thoughts! I still have that nervous/excitement about taking my 3 solo next year!

Last night my 9 year old said to me "What if you can't handle it Mom?". I told her they better behave well enough so that I can handle it!

Part VII:

Random thoughts…in no particular order…which I guess is what random means….

DDP:

The dining plan costs me $99.96 per day. 2 adults (me & 10 yr old dd) and 2 children. The baby is free. Divided by 5….that’s 19.99 per day per person. Yes, I am aware that there is no way the baby can eat that much….also, I am aware of the issues or should I say controversies surround the ddp’s use…but the way I figure it…it costs me $20 per person….(for the sake of argument…don’t include the baby…it’s still $25 per day.) I think under $100 per day to feed a family of 5 is great. It doesn’t matter if 2 of them are small…it would still costs the same if they were 2, 5 & 9.

Anyway, I added up the costs:
MK : $124.22;
MGM: $112.46;
AK/DTD: $162.09;
Resort: $60.05.

I also spent $13.74 OOP.

My total costs for the plan was $399.84. We spent $458.82. We saved $58.98 on the DPP before paying taxes & 18% gratuity.

Would I do ddp again?

I think yes during the next few years. As my children get older I may have to reconsider because when DS2 is 3, DS1 will be 9…that will add another $10.99 to my day (assuming it doesn’t go up…yeah, right). The next year, I will have to add another adult to the package because DS1 will be 10. Can my petite DD1 (who will be 12 at this time) eat all this food? Yes…but we were sharing desserts & appies with everyone….When DS1 is considered an adult…we will have much more food….I just think that might be too much food, fat, & waste.

The point might be moot….they just may do away with the ddp by then!!

Travel:

I would never drive to WDW (11 hours) alone with 4 children….especially when 1 is in diapers & one is 3. If they were older, I might consider it…if I were going to make a detour to the beach or something. Flying, the way to go….more expensive…but you get to spend more time at the parks.

This brings me to the issue of flight times….it was NOT worth it for me to take a late night flight just to save $30 per ticket. Yes, it was $150 saved…but we were up until after 1:00a and dragged the next day (at least I did).

CARES seat belt harness system for children 22-44 lbs. Use in lieu of car seat if you are not renting a car. You can not use a car seat in the ME bus so unless you are renting a car, I wouldn’t bring one. I am not saying to hold your baby or not buy him a seat…invest in the CARES system. www.kidsflysafe.com (I am not affiliated with them).

Solo adult?

Should you bring a nanny or good friend? Depends on the ages of your children. My older ones were 10 & 7 and with the purchase of a GO phone I felt comfortable letting them go on rides by themselves. I always waited for them to come off the ride. If this had been my first trip, I would have felt like I was missing out since I couldn’t ride BTTMR, EE, SM, etc. Since I’ve been many times, it wasn’t a big deal (except the EE thing). If my children were older…and could ride all the rides, I’d go by myself in a minute.

The next time I would try to bring someone or go with another family so that I could have someone there to help me with the kids….AND I would stay longer. If it were another short trip…I’d go alone again.

Luggage:

Pack as much as possible in as little as possible….I packed for 5 in 2 large roll on bags and 1 child’s roll on. The small bags are easier for them to manage. My 3 yr old could pull one (but was too slow so she was confined to the stroller). Everyone has black suit cases….get a different color. Tie a ribbon to your handle if you do have a black one….NOTE: lots of people use RED ribbon. Everyone was using the WDW tags that ME sent as a souvenir. They are cute but don’t hold up to airport handling…we lost 2. I put an address sticker under the wheel mechanism so that I can be sure that my information is on the bag.

Stroller: Rent or Bring?

If you are flying, bring your own and gate check it. Even if you are driving…if you have room, bring one…you’ll save $18 day.

OH OH OH OH…I just remembered….at MK they had an “express” stroller rental outside the security stand. I remember thinking I’d wished they’d had that last year.

If you wear your baby, bring a sling, wrap or pouch and stick it in your bag. It will come in handy during long waits in line.

Where to stay:

On site. I love the delux resorts for large families...the family suite at ASM and the standard queen with bunks at AKL were only $140 difference in price for 4 nights.

Waiting for Rides:

If you’ve done the ride before & it’s not a big deal, skip it if the line is really long. If you are alone you really can’t do Baby switch or FP. During crowded time, I’d definitely skip instead of wait lines….again, it really depends on the ages of your children & how patient/tired/happy they are at the time.

Pictures:

Take plenty. Down load to laptop….or get a 1gb scan disk….use photopass so that you can be in some of the pictures.
Bring your video camera. You will want to see these priceless images later.

When to go:

Take your kids out of school and go during the LOW attendance time. The first 3 weeks of December used to be great…now I think it’s hit or miss.

Get to the parks early. Although we were there during a crowded time, the parks were not crowded until after lunch. The earlier you get there the better. Take advantage of having babies who wake up early…head out early.

Stay late. I have also found that when the parks open really late, say midnight, it’s less crowded from 10-12a….do you want to keep a baby or toddler out that late? It’s your call.

At the parks:

Use fast pass. Bring your own ponchos….usually can be found at the Dollar Store…instead of buying $7 wdw ponchos. They all work the same….except maybe the wdw ones are thicker. If you have little ones, hit fantasy land first & get it over with.

Dining:

Make your ADR’s in advance. Buffet lets under 3 eat free. Table service is more expensive (get more value out of your ddp) but you may consume too much food. Buffet & fixed pricing are good if you have several little ones not on ddp. You can get walk in service at most Table Service restaurants IF you are willing to eat right when they open. I was told by a CM that they have a limited number of walk in spaces only available from 11-3p. (told this at MGM).

Airport:

If possible, have someone available to send you off & meet you at the airport…they will help you out by carrying some of your luggage. And everyone feels awesome when they see a loved one or friend waiting for them outside the gate.

Well, I think that’s it. I hope this trip report has given you some ideas and the courage to go to WDW with your kids….even if it’s by yourself.

Have a great New Year.

Wow thanks for all the info!! Eventually I'll get time to read your whole trip report. If you can do it with 4 kids 10 and under, then I sure can too!! Thankfully even though my husband really doesn't want to go he is a good helper here at home so I hope he will be there too. We shall see! Thanks for responding to my thread. With much appreciation, arielslm

Hi! Can you tell me about the Southwest CARES program? I tried calling and the lady knew nothing about it. I also seached their website. We are leaving in 21 days. Thanks!

The CARES information is on the SWA website.........I just went to their site to copy the link & it looks as if they have changed their website up....it was under Traveling with Baby....but it's gone now.....

but www.kidsflysafe.com is where you order it from. I found out about it by reading the section on SWA.

I'm going to keep searching for it. edited to say: I FOUND THE LINK

or if you don't want to go to the site, here's a partial:

Wonderful trip report!! :) I may have to take three children solo next time so reading this was great. Loved the pictures too!!

Wonderful, detailed report and you gave your kids a great trip! I'm glad people helped you on the busses!

DD1 said that I needed to add the following:

Wear crocs to the parks. They dry out fast when it rains. You don't slip when you run. They are comfortable and you can walk for hours in them.

DD1 also mentioned that I should bring a sitter next time so that we could leave the other kids in the hotel while we went to disney quest. I told her that SHE would be my baby sitter and I could leave her with the kids while I went to disney quest....(she didn't think that was funny).:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I really enjoyed your report! I took my kids to WDW for the first time solo, driving from Ohio, when they were 4 and 6. We had so much fun, and it was so much easier than I thought, that we have been at least once a year ever since, they are now 14 and 11. If you can do it at home you can do it on vacation!

:drinking1 Here's to many more vacations!

I loved your report and kudo's for taking your 4 kids. I have 4 and 3 are in college and the youngest is in h.s. They grow up really fast. Thanks for all your tips at the end.

You're welcome!!:goodvibes

Thanks for reading everyone...until next time, next trip!:goodvibes

Great report. :thumbsup2

Your experience at Boma sounds like ours at Rain Forest Cafe at AK. I was so disgusted that I didn't think I'd ever want to go back even though the food was fine. For our next trip, we asked the kids to choose one restaurant they really wanted to eat at and we'd (try! think Cinderella's castle for breakfast) to make sure it happened. Guess which one DS13 picked? :confused3

I'll add a  for people that volunteer to help on buses, especially crowded ones. I remember one very crowded bus at the end of a very tiring day. Nobody offered to let me sit down even though I was holding DS, who was about 20 months. They all looked tired, too! A sweet little grandmotherly type asked if he would let her hold him on her lap. He did and I was so thankful!
