Hi there all. I am writing this to remind us all about the giving out of personal information.

I just received an in-game warning for sharing personal information. I was doing Fin's quest and had popped into the Blue Bayou. I thought it was from that. But, that wasn't it. I'm in Emporium and VMK_Fusion calls out for me. He told me I needed to set an example. I asked what I had done, since after finishing the last question, I went afk. He said they saw the chat, and for me not to do it again. I apologized, of course.

Prior to doing the quest, I was in my room, on friends only, with a fellow DISer. We were discussing where we lived and how hot it was, and how we never get to see the sights that others so much want to.

So, here's the lesson to us all: Regardless of where or when you speak, regardless of who is around or not around, VMK is always watching. I had gotten lax in my giving out of information to fellow DISers. It is still wrong. Period. And, evidently, VMK is not turning a blind eye to it.

According to the warning I received, if it happens again, I am banned.

I hope this serves as a reminder to us all to follow VMK values, at all times and with all people.

They have a question about giving out personal information in the new quest too. Esmeralda also occasionally talk about it. I guess VMK wants to really make sure we don't.

to mee it seems to be getting a little out of control. According to the latest quest even if you say i am finished with school you can get banned!!! that is a bit of an over reaction. Yes I know its for safety but that seems a bit much to me.

Thats why I just try not to talk at all in VMK

I want to be clear that I did not start this thread to begin a debate on what makes sense and what doesn't. Bottom line is that giving out information about yourself is against the rules. For everyone. Young, old, tall, short, leader, not leader. We'd do well to remember that, at all times.

Wow, Looks like I just missed this Dara. This must have happened right after I left your room.

I have been thinking about this a lot lately. Sometimes when we are with people that we have known for a while and talk with outside of VMK, we forget the rules. We slip and talk about things we should not. I had a feeling VMK was going to crack down on this because of all the recent posts to the safety corner, etc.

A kid at heart maybe! I'm not trying to debat, I know its a good thing to restrict what can be said, I just dont see how saying im finshed with school is worse than saying many other things that VMK doesnt ban over. I think the whole taken and baby things would be much more dangerous than that. I am glad VMK is craking down on it just think there are other things they could do.
Again I'm not really complaining that part of quest just struck me as funny.

Actually, Saying that you are finished with school doesn't tell me anything.
I can say I'm fisnished with school. I just don't say when that was.
A person in college can say they are finished with school, too. They are usually over 18.

I also don't understand how saying I'm home alone could hurt anything either. That doesn't really tell anyone anything other than you're alone. You're not saying where you're home is nor are you saying how old you are.

These two things really have no identifying information in them.
If they want to get right down to it, saying "I glove Queen" could be considered personal info. And it's every bit as identifying as saying I'm home alone or I'm finished with school.

But, I understand what you're saying, Dara. We do need to be careful about what we say. I'll admit that at times I've been lax in that area too. I've just been lucky enough to never even get a warning about it.

Good reminder to all about what you say no matter who it is.

And really it isn't a good thing to say you are home alone. What if its a kid saying it? Not an adult? Who knows who the person is on the other side and then how much more info that kid will give out. That is the thing. I do think the finish school thing can push it since it could be any kind of school and some want to say they are on summer vacation by saying that. But its really a protection thing for kids since its suppose to be a safe game for them to play in. Which I also agree if they crack down on this then get to cracking down on all the other things that are breaking the rules left and right with how they talk as well so it becomes that much more safer.

I was a girl immediately disappear yesterday after telling everybody it was her birthday. I also so a boy disappear immediately after saying it was hot where he lives and he swam today.

Although, I think they need to be more concerned about the adult content coming from these children than statements like that, which in no way would tell me how to find you.

While I do agree that it's so important to be careful when speaking in VMK because of personal info, I also agree that some of the statements people make can in no way locate someone.

Saying "I'm finished with school" can be a few different things. It could be an middle age adult who finished school 20 years ago. It could be a college student home for the summer or just graduated. It could be a grade or high school student who just finished up another year.

Saying it's hot where you live could be anywhere...as it's summer. Imagine that, summer = hot. I'm Bolivian, and in Bolivia, they're entering winter soon. However even their winters are around the mid 70s to 80s. Yes it can be a hot winter day. They have a waterpark month, as they did last year...and they're hosting it during the summer. So to warn someone because they say it's hot where they live? My guess is that they were more concerned about the statement "where I live" (or however it was said) more than they were about the fact that what you said didn't even hint to where you live. I know people who say "it rained today". Well shoot, that could be Florida, the Caribbean or England! Who knows?

I do absolutely agree people need to be careful about what they say. But there are statements that really have nothing to do with the outside world/reality. Talking about the weather isn't really going to give away your location unless you're specifying something that can only narrow it down to a specific place.

Yavn told me that it's Personally idenifible information (Pii, as both he and dog refered to it as....) that is what can get you a banned. Something that would narrow down your location or who you are.

My interptation is... You can say you are done with school, but you should not share your school mascot/colors.

You can say Boy it's lava where I live, but Not boy is lava here in She.Car.Go

You can say I have tree kids, but not My kids titles are Same.an.the, Yavn and Dog (giggle)


General comments about life are fine... Specifc comments are not good. At least that is what Yavn told me personally, so I will hold him to it.

Thanks for the reminder. A few weeks ago I found a friend the same age as me (not very many college students playing VMK) and we were sharing what classes we were taking, where we worked, etc. I shouldn't have done that, yikes.

your real phone number
your real home or work address
where you attend school or the name of your school

and I will even go so far as to say your IM id but never in a million years is it I live on the EAST Coast...if by some chance on Gods Green earth someone can find me by that then have at it!

Agreed! I mean, it could be sunny anywhere in the world! I'm lucky because I've said things like that many times, and I have never gotten banned. And saying that sharing the color of your eyes is personal information is stupid. I mean, how many colors are there of eyes?...

Since most of the players in VMK are kids it is not a stretch for a predator to figure anyone in the game is a kid and go after them.

Yes they are really cracking down on us. I recently got a 2 hour ban for saying "my computer is loading the rooms slow because I am on a land line"

I am not sure how that is personal information. I just don't have a fast computer connection.

I see people say a lot worse things everyday, and they don't disappear as fast as I did.

So moral of the story Don't Say "LAND LINE" in VMK.
